Squid in Red

We encountered this whiplash squid (Magnoteuthis magna) at a depth of 1,310 meters (4,300 feet) while exploring a canyon off the coast of Virginia during the Windows to the Deep 2019 expedition. This species is quite common below 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) along the Northeastern coast of the United States and feeds by extending its two long tentacles as it drifts along with the current. Here's a mesmerizingly close look at an octopus (Muusoctopus sp.)! This amazing imagery was captured on remotely operated vehicle Deep Discoverer's cameras during a Seascape Alaska 5 dive to explore at 3,180 meters (2 miles) depth on a seamount in the Gulf of Alaska. While super cool to look at, these close zooms also provide scientists important details (like the two rows of suckers on the ani...

Now That's Deep...And CLOSE!

Ever wonder what we mean when we talk about the "deep" ocean? For us, "deep" is greater than 200 meters (656 feet), which is the depth at which sunlight begins to dwindle. But the absence of sun does not equate to the absence of life... This giant grenadier (Albatrossia pectoralis) was seen (UP CLOSE!!) during the Seascape Alaska 5 expedition, while exploring off the north coast of Kodiak, Alas...

Don't Be Jelly of Big Red!

This “big red jelly" (Tiburonia granrojo) was observed during the 900-meter (2,950-foot) transect to explore the water column on the first dive of the Seascape Alaska 3 expedition. Unlike other jellies, big red jellies use fleshy "feeding arms," visible in this video, instead of stinging tentacles to capture food. Living up to their “big red” common name, these jellies can be over one meter (th...

Those large funnel openings are massive, some 25 feet, down there you would probably find more human shoes as some of Titanic victims was sucked down into those openings.

I'll never forget as this was the very first video I have ever seen about the Titanic.
