    This ain't bass fishing in a lake, pilgrim :). If you are going to fly fish you need to learn to read the water. It wasn't remotely "too fast" that hole you were casting over is absolutely loaded with fish as well as the entire riffle upstream from there. Trout RARELY hang out in dead water. They want a feeding station that allows them to sit behind a rock and have moving water bring the food to them. Dart out and munch. Trout will hold in FAR faster water than that because its better oxygenated and the food freeway is right there. They just need a small rock to break the current. And you should know as well, the current is much, much slower near the bottom where the trout are waiting for a meal. The smallest rock or hole is all they need for ideal trout habit, moving water. Way more than spin fishing fly fishing is about understanding the river and its natural history. You will know what lives there and where. Especially on the Yuba the slow water is the dead water.

    Way to try something different. Fly fishing is challenging but addictive. One thing I noticed is the way you hold your life. You retrieve with your left hand and there are times when you let go and have no control over your line. You should be holding your line with your forefinger on your right hand and then strip behind it. That way you can stop the line with your finger and set the hook. The nymph you tied on looked like a bead head hares ear. You should tie a smaller nymph from it (micro mayfly or something similar). As a general rule trout will be in the soft water next to some fast current. The fast water will bring the food to them and sitting in the slower water requires them to expend less energy. Yuba fish are among the best fighters. The river gets a lot of pressure though. I hope to be hitting the Y next week...... it's egg drop season. The trout are meeting in on the eggs of the spawning salmon. Try not to bother the salmon but the trout will be sitting right behind the redd. If you're going to be on the water I'd be glad to show you some productive sections of water.

    Definitely some good tips Docjoe1 gave you for getting that casting down. When you are casting and doing false casts (back casts), really nailing that back cast is super important. You want to keep your wrist more stiff and use your arm basically as a lever that quickly and purposefully moves the rod forwards and backwards to the positions to load the rod. You can imagine these positions like 10 and 2 o'clock on a clock face. It may feel a little strange at first but try and move the rod to those positions a bit more abruptly and firmly stop the rod once you reach the position. It may even feel like you are stopping the rod too early, and that is absolutely fine, the timing on it is something you have to get used to. If you are having trouble on your backcast, maybe even try stopping the rod at an earlier position more like 1 o'clock on the clock, almost completely vertical, especially if you have a decent amount of line out. When you are ready to finish your cast forward, you do the same abrupt stop at your 10 o'clock position in the front, and slowly lower your rod tip as the fly line extends forward. Remember, if you ever are having an issue where your fly line just doesn't seem to be extending out properly and piling in front of you, check your stopping positions on your casts, because you may be breaking your wrist on the cast and bringing the rod tip either too far forward and backwards The key with casting fly line is getting that rod loaded up with tension that eventually releases your line in a nice loop going outwards. When you are loading the road effectively, you should be able to feel the tension in the rod as the line moves forwards and backwards, and it does help when learning to watch the line all the way, going both directions, to really feel when the line is loading the rod, as that timing will tell you when to go forward, and you should also be able to see this partially reflected in the tip of the rod as it bends. You have to make sure you stop fairly abruptly at these positions as that is what will send your line loop outward correctly, as well as load the rod more effectively. This timing changes slightly and gets a little longer as you get more line out, and feeling that timing out just takes practice. Really casting is all about learning how to manipulate the constant motion of the fly line back and forth in order to cast exactly where you want it, and the power of the cast comes from the motion of the line and the loading of the rod, not from your strength put into the cast like often for spinning reel setups. Sorry for writing you a small essay, but I tried to convey in words without any visuals a basic idea of how to conceptualize the fly casting motion. Fly fishing is certainly not easy, but I will say, keep practicing and getting better, the fish will come as you get better. Fly fishing truly is like a puzzle, and as you start to fill in the pieces, you begin to get the whole picture of what it takes each day to find the action with the fish, whether it is different flies, types of water, different presentations, or just sometimes luck lol. The Yuba certainly is not an easy river to fish for a beginner, but there certainly are some good ones there, you never know if you may hook a 20+ incher. Being a local Californian I like giving some advice to others when I can. If you have any other questions or clarifications or tip requests, please feel free to ask me anything. I am by no means a "pro" at flyfishing, nor do I even always catch fish most of the time when I'm out, but I've probably got some good advice to give. Tight lines, and I hope that big trout is waiting for your fly line soon!

  • @docjoe1
    @docjoe1 Před 2 lety

    Congrats on trying Fly Fishing. the Yuba can be tough and I've been shut out several times up there. Regarding your cast, try to think of the cast as different than a spinner rod. You are breaking your wrist too much. I would recommend you keep the wrist fairly locked and try making your cast from the elbow. When you make the back cast, bend at the elbow and feel the fly line go back and tug back the rod tip. when you feel that, drive the rod tip forward at the elbow (not breaking the wrist). It's like golf, using the big muscles of your body like the elbows and arms rather than the wrists. Good luck! Hope you catch one on the dry fly! They are very rewarding!
