The regular Army certainly is diluted. From what I hear basic training today is completely different than it was in the 80s when i went through it.

Simple answer. Most of the Vietnam guys grew up snapping the heads off chickens or burying the family dog when it died. Very few modern vets grew up on farms. Most let someone else do the "hard" stuff. Add the modern habit of avoiding reality with cell phones and video games, it's amazing to me that the numbers of ptsd aren't much higher than they are.

My uncle was captured at the Battle of the Bulge. He was 6'5" and 245lbs. He was 114lbs. when liberated. It was over a year before he got home after liberation. He lived to 93 and woke up with screaming nightmares the rest of his life.

I didnt know any ww2 vets personally but i have noticed in many documentary interviews combat vets in tears recalling moments of combat and trying to reconcile their survival and the loss of their brothers in arms. The docs always seemed to attribute what the survivors were experiencing as a random result of the brutality of combat. However it occurs to me, based on the details of combat in Ww2 as they have been preserved for us after 8 decades, it was most likely the soldiers that succumbed to Ptsd that made up the bulk of casualties. And those aged vets choked up with grief weren't mourning a particular friend but comming to terms with their own savage nature that allowed them to thrive in what many today would still consider, mistakenly in my opinion, inhuman conditions.
