The calm before the storm.
There's a storm coming here and I don't mean the weather. The city has somehow managed to get control of the senior citizens center property and has sold it to a very shady developer for them to build the hotel for the extremely shady golf course project here. And as bad that is, this absolutely disgusting manner in which this is unfolding is not acceptable. So stock up on the popcorn, and some extra drinks because the show will be starting very soon.

Can you tell which are the youngsters? #crows #crowlovers

One thing the baby birds learn really fast is how to steal food. And I think that last one to fly off at the end is the one with the white feathers. Eventually I will get some good video of it, it's a beautiful little bird. One thing that has been a nice change from last year is that the resident family are allowing some of the others to come share. Even better, they seem to be working in a mul...

Unfortunately one of the fledglings was severely injured on Friday. I was not able to get to it until almost dark. I thought it was already gone but it was still clinging to life. I brought it inside for the night to keep it safe. Saturday, with the help from neighbors, we were able to send it to more capable people. But this morning (Sunday) I learned it had succumbed to its injuries. It had a...

A good selection of different ages. Surprisingly the little kids are not begging. The little birbs at the end are just your standard house sparrows. They and the doves eat the birdseed the crows don't care much for.

The Steller's Jay is having a slightly easier time getting a peanut because the crows are distracted with the fledglings around. I had put peanuts out hoping that the fledgling with white feathers would come with the parents. But of course when I have the camera ready they refuse to cooperate. So since the cats are also hanging out I put some kitty kibble out for the cats and the crows. I even ...

We started summer off here with a little storm. The rain was welcome but it was still chilly. It's odd sometimes with the smaller storms seeming to create rougher conditions than the big blows. Yesterday the surf had brought in lots of sand, the beach was very soft even farther away from the dune face. Now today it's seaweed, so the current is pretty strong. it's funny how things cycle through,...

The kitty kibble is in big demand. The new models have not fledged yet, but they hungry. I'm surprised that the resident crows still allow the others to come. But they do pull rank and get first pick. And some get chased off, there's definitely a social order at work. It makes for entertaining observation.

What really sucks is the habitat loss here. The lot next to me used to be their hide out, with a couple of apple trees and other deer food. Now it's devoid of all vegetation. This town is really getting disgusting with the total disregard for any sort of environmental protection.

  • @eriktorget192

I'm not sure if he's still a yearling or is 2, he's still kinda small. He's snacking on some birdseed and peanuts, I'm all out of apples. It's been pretty cool, he comes by frequently and is starting to be comfortable with me being near by. On the 4th of July he was curled up just off the corner of my house while the fireworks were going off in the distance. So I am glad he feels safe here. The meowing is Teddy being needy and the crows were slightly miffed because he was eating their peanuts.

Sometimes. And sometimes not so much. There also is a difference in behavior with what snack they are served. This is the usual routine for kitty kibble. If it was peanuts, there would be fights, and the resident crows would try to drive the rest away. It is also a good way to watch the social order at work.

Unfortunately the video of it flying overhead with a couple of crows chasing it didn't turn out. I couldn't tell exactly what it was, quite possibly an Osprey, there are several around and occasionally they fly over land here. It's possible that it's one of the juvenile/sub-adult Bald Eagles but it just doesn't look right. Whatever it was it knew gaining altitude will throw the crows off.

    • @eriktorget192

These are the same as those last year although mostly full grown, intact ones. The ones last year seemed to be not fully grown or formed, just small bits with an occasional adult (?). It definitely takes longer for the full size to dissolve/evaporate, there's still plenty laying around. Another interesting, if odd, thing about them is they are either that beautiful blue or transparent. The full size also seem to shrivel and dry out making them look almost like weird looking leaves or flower petals. Thankfully they are not in enough numbers to make a huge stink. Although if you drove over them and then park in a small garage it will.

These would be the condo crows, the ones behind me are the almost yearlings. They were kinda shy. Then shortly after this another pair came. They acted like they were familiar with me but I'm not sure which they are. All the beach crows, except the condo birds, disappeared by late summer last year, so I don't know who they were. I'm glad you got to see the ravens there. They can be very entertaining to watch.

    • @corvusaeternus

@@eriktorget192 Maybe the beach crows found a new territory or the condo crows had a fight with them and don`t want them there? Ravens are cool but unfortunately I don`t see them very often. But it`s still good to know that they are spreading again slowly.

You had snow in March! Here it`s been really warm in February and March. Nature is very early with everything. Some birds already started breeding in February. The neighbourhood crows started with their nests at the end of February as well. The forest crows are starting now. What about your crows?

    • @eriktorget192
      @eriktorget192 Před 5 měsíci

They are starting with the territory shenanigans, squabbling with each other. They will still follow me but not as far as they have been. And still coming in the morning en masse but that will change shortly. For an El Nino year, they overall weather was far more normal than expected. It will be interesting to see what the last week of March will produce. The biggest development of late is volcanic activity a few hundred kilometers off the coast of Vancouver island, Canada. It should not be much of a problem in the short term but creates problems for some later date.

One just never knows around here. It was 17, maybe 18c over the weekend but back to a more normal 10c or so. For a El Nino year, it has proved to be more of the average than the warmer/drier that is supposed to occur during a El Nino. Not quite nesting/mating for the crows yet, here. Another week or two but they are starting to change behavior. There has been an interesting development off the coast of Vancouver Island...possibility of a volcanic eruption. At approximately 500km from here is where there is a tectonic plate boundary which is spreading like the current happenings in Iceland. While concerning, it shouldn't pose too many problems. There's actually 3 plates in this portion of the world, the Pacific, the North American and the Juan DeFuca. It's the Pacific and Juan that are separating, making more mantle.

Until the eagle decides its had enough, then they are lunch. It definitely gets everybody's tail feathers in a twist when the eagles are on the prowl. While they do come into town anytime, they usually are looking for fish. But during the mating season (which is almost over for them) they prowl around town more often. And every kind of bird will try to drive them off. I've seen little house sparrows chase them.
