In my quest for a fitting landmark for Westgate circle, I found myself pulled all the way back to the founding of our great state. What made Maryland unique from other early colonies? Could the principles held by our founders remain evergreen after 400 years? I began with our beloved flag. It is an image we see everywhere; on trucks, small business logos, front lawns, and bumper stickers of eve...

    Is this better than Uldis Zarins book Anatomy for sculptors? That book looks more modern, but sometimes the older books are made better.

    • @CasaliArts
      @CasaliArts Před měsícem

      Hi Joseph, I think the Zarins book is very good, but in different ways. Obviously modern photography and printing allows for more detailed images. I can see that many of the Zarins book illustrations come from Lanteri, Loomis, and Vanderpoel. This is fine, IMO, but we also must study the main sources as diagrams tend to get watered down like in a game of telephone. I also believe that Lanteri's philosophy and writing is more boiled down to the essential things. To your point, I generally find that older things ARE better, in the case of fine art. Good luck

    the only comment I have on this book is that I wish more people, when presenting it, would make mention to the reference he makes regarding the human skull shape in Europeans vs Africans, and that those differences are paralleled to mental capacity vs instinct. I'm sure we would all agree that this is quite wrong, and to our 21st century morals, quite offensive. This is not to say that an offence was intended considering the book was first published in 1903 (I believe), however if we are reading it today, we need to be clear and put into context the reference to the time it was made, and how little we knew.

    Thanxs God that there are people like you who still believe in the value and beauty of old art & books like me. I got graduated from art college last year and I was planning to learn how to be an artist like Michael Angelo! I was completely disappointed from studying there because they didn't appreciate the beauty of the old masters and instead their focus was on the ugliness of the modern art.

    That presentation is fabulous Rick and this sculpture is delicate yet relatable, a fine piece of art well executed as well as this history lesson you genuinely share and it is needed to be heard and appreciated. Thank you so much! I don’t even understand why we didn’t see the entries before any judging and decision was made. Seems to me art shows are shown to the public before judging… all mine were. I wonder what the other entries were now. Incredible presentation leaves me wanting to know more, like how did a George and Anne meet… and more. There must be a place for your beautiful sculpture. Your child is fortunate to have a father who cares about history, teaching and also of the state. You are easy to listen to, spark curiosity and interest and I feel better educated now about Our flag and our ancestors vs only if reading this history. I hope schools would invite you to speak to youth in our city and county. I hope this type of history and art you create and coordinate with sculpture continues in our City of Annapolis and others. Peace like the symbol of a dove! What this city needs right now is peace and a passion forward for peace verbalized and visualized. Ideal and with plants also around it in the circle would have been lovely and peaceful and since not I pray somewhere else it shall shine for all to see and learn by. Sincerely, Natalie Benincasa-Powell Ward 8 I can’t wait to share this lesson. Thanks for preserving it on CZcams!

    • @CasaliArts
      @CasaliArts Před 7 měsíci

      Thank you, Natalie for your thoughtful response. I agree that the selection process may be flawed from the start. Perhaps in the future all submissions could be visible and there could be a "People's Choice" for the board to consider. It's a strange thing with these public commissions, they never have a specific vision for what they want sculpted, but then they have the audacity to shackle the artists' vision. In this case, they stated they did not want any specific figure or anything related to history. And, you can see what that gets you, one only has to look at the finalists. I must issue a correction, I misspoke in the beginning of my video! George Calvert's son Cecil married Anne Arundell, and that marriage lead to the birth of our flag. Leonard was Cecil's brother and the first governor of Maryland. 'Mary's Land' is named after the queen at that time who was French Catholic, Henrietta Maria...who was known in Britain simply as Queen Mary. the Catholics in Maryland probably liked this nod to her and also liked the connection to our Blessed Mother. I'll link below to a more detailed video on Anne Arundell, whom I also considered sculpting. She was an interesting figure, an artist, mother, and heroine: czcams.com/video/LKEm8l38UNw/video.htmlsi=EQm4uYE6_6gNN3wl

    He looks half naked, wearing sheer undergarments. This is not a criticism of nudity, nor of the beauty of the human form, yet this statue appears highly provocative. Certain elements seem incongruous, such as the Dove and the impression of the phallus. If, on the other hand, colonial sexual exploitation, violence, and patriarchal rule over indigenous peoples are being suggested, all of these symbols work in harmony.

    Picasso, like pollack were simply tax havens for the rich looking to divest. It was in the best interests of those investors to bolster importance of the creators "work" thru hype to increase the value of their portfolios. So insidious was this strategy that it was even taught in grade schools and to this day Picasso is the one of only two or three artists known to the general population. It had nothing to do with skill, nothing to do with talent. Picasso and pollack knew they were pawns and that they were "kept-men" in gilded cages by their investors. They sold themselves to the rich, they sold themselves to the devil. Nothing more.

    Very interesting. I did a search for an ebook of Mr Dunlops publication and to my shock discovered that the Google version, in the Internet Archives and also the Open Library has been edited to remove the actual drawings. Presumably because they offend someones definition of what a male and female is. Keep those physical books safe. They are censoring the digital versions. I've got the book on Strength Training Anatomy and although at first I dismissed it, now that I've had a few years of figure drawing, I agree. Great book! He focuses on female anatomy just as much as male but unfortunately he doesn't emphasize the differences. Unlike Michelangelo, his females do look like females but the why is missing so it's not designed as an art book but is better than most art anatomy books.

    great landmarks and great observations! Love how landmarks could combine and reinforce gesture. Just two quick notes: between sartorious and TFL is rectus femoris, no bicep femoris (I know you know, sure it was the oral equivalent to a typo!), and also, that inverted V shape has another name? because (as far as I know) the femoral triangle is a more medial area and include abductors.

    • @CasaliArts
      @CasaliArts Před 10 měsíci

      Yes, I must have misspoke. It is the rectus femoris, not biceps femoris which on the back of the leg! As for the inverted V, I am referrring to the TFL and Sartorius tendo combo. Directly below that, in the vertex of the V, is the femoral fossa. I would like to know the femoral triangle, but have not met her yet. Thanks for joining my patreon page!

    • @ArielGulluni78

(love discovering that, is easy to remember, to identify and to comunicate it with a name!). Then, I google femoral fossa and didn't find anything. Do you remember if Goldfinger or Richer mention it?
