JELLY ROLL MORTON - Shoe Shiner's Drag 1928 HQ sound
Recorded on the 11th of June 1928 in New York at the Liederkrantz Hall. Here with his Red Hot Peppers. I was impressed by this recording, the deep tone from the tuba, the kickdrum starting at 2:17 and so on. What a blast!

    ACGhifiaudio very useful technical details, thanks for sharing all these things... I have a ks musicmaster 511h turntable and i work hard to make it play 78',i use Shure 75mg with 75n 2.5mil needle I wand to improve the sound in my Chanel and your video makes me wondering if a mono cartridge like audio technica mono sp worth the money for it? Mono sp doesn't need a preamplifier? I will be thankful if you answer me..

    • @acghifiaudio-vinyland78rpm53
      @acghifiaudio-vinyland78rpm53 Před 4 měsíci

      I’m not familiar with the musikmaster 511, is it a newer or older player? Your Shure pickup is a stereo-type cartride and works fine playing diagonal cut mono (later years) records. For lateral cut i recomend a true mono cartridge and the audio technica at3mono sp is such a cartridge. It should not give an output signal for vertical movement. The SP can have a high, or relatively high vertical tracking force. What could perhaps be considered is the tonearm compliance which is 3-4 times lower than for ”normal” stereo cartridhes. The stiff suspension of cantillever is positive but transfer more energy to the tonarm and it’s bearings. If you can find specifications for your tonearm it should be able ti handle values down to 4-5 10^-6 nm. The SP has a compliance value of 3.5. If your arm is of older type, sturdy and hevvy, it shoud nit be a problem. If it is lightweight and flimsy you could get problem with distortion. You can hear that quite often in youtube uploads of 78 were to light tonearms are used. The output of the SP is high 1.2 mV for a MC cartridge but still low compared to a MM(~5mV).You still need a preamplifier to get a ”RIAA” equalisation but probably you do not need a SUT, step up transformer which otherwise is reccommended for MC cartridges.

      Thanks for your answer..! Musicmaster is a Japanese semiprofessional turntable build at 1965 for 78rpm more,the tonearm is heavy and long so if i learn correctly ,for all the 78rpm mono cartridge is a must...

    • @acghifiaudio-vinyland78rpm53
      @acghifiaudio-vinyland78rpm53 Před 4 měsíci

      Glad You like it. Of course! The cart is an Ortofon type C from the early 50's, despite the letter A on the housing, with an 90um stylus (3.5 mil). EQ is similar to RIAA (500N13.7) in my custom built preamplifier from my video: czcams.com/video/P0CeC4Q8xo4/video.htmlsi=oa-np3MUdG9kEiIY These preamps were perhaps built by Klangfilm in Germany but had no EQ filters. I've built the EQ filter myself and it is similar to the filter of the EMT 139 stb I have added a bass shelf, which was later introduced in the RIAA curve as well in 1976. And perhaps a little less than 13.7 db attenuation of 10khz. I record the sound from the preamplifier in 24 bit 96khz with Wavelab 12 PRO were I use a declick filter. Then I use Spectralayer 10 pro to reduce noise and remove clicks which the de-click filter could not remove. Then I normalise everything to about -2 or -3db. That's almost all.

    Equalization curve applied? Assume RIAA?

    • @acghifiaudio-vinyland78rpm53
      @acghifiaudio-vinyland78rpm53 Před 4 měsíci

      Yes, this record is from 1956 and Capitol introduced The New Ortofonic equalization in 1952, what later became RIAA (500N13.7). That would make RIAA the correct equalisation for this record. However, I chose to make a bass shelf, a roll-off of low frequency. Was perhaps not neccessary at the time but with "modern" cartridges and preamps the bass will be to strong. A bass shelf was later (1976?) introduced in the RIAA curve. I have built several preamplifiers and the one I use here is custom built/modified and explained in my video: czcams.com/video/P0CeC4Q8xo4/video.htmlsi=b80a1fvmZZQK_oz8 Bare in mind that many record companies did not introduced the RIAA until many years later, even though claiming to.

      Yes. That works. I tried it many years ago and it is quite effektive. Unfortunately my comptessor is old and some oilmist follows with the air. Leaving a fine oily residue on the record gunking up the cartridge needle. It was as well difficult to get it even over the surface leaving some dust left. One could trying doing it while the record is spinning but I need to install a air cleaner filter on my air hose before trying again. Thanks for the comment!

    Another great hard rockin' originator 'Jimmy Reed' from 1957. Growing up in the 50's & 60's listening to blues and R&B from the 30's on gave me a total disgust for the 'British Invasion'. Do you know why, or do you need instructions? Maby for me it's because in the 50's after my father went to work my mother would tune the radio to a blues/r&b station dancing, cooking breakfast and doing housework. We still danced to gutbucket blues until she passed in 2008. That's my joy and great memories. I'm so glad that now almost all this music can be found and put things in the proper order. Thanks so much for all the music!!! 😊😊😊😊

    Pops had in his collection recordings of several operas. As a child he would wait outside the French Opera House on Bourbon St.and listen for any music he could catch. Around ages 7-9 he reportedly included some aria-like phrasing in his singing with a quartet of friends singing on street corners for change from passers-by. (Joshua Berrett, "Louis Armstrong and Opera", Musical Quarterly 76 (No. 2, 1992) pp. 216-240. This excerpt (by other performers) may have been one of many he heard. I don't get it: the music started playing before the needle dropped. Is this your actual 78 playing or just a repressing you are using for audio? I have never seen this kind of tom-foolery before, but it casts doubt on your authenticty, and, strangely, on authenticity of everyone else who purports to be playing 78s on video.

    • @acghifiaudio-vinyland78rpm53
      @acghifiaudio-vinyland78rpm53 Před 4 měsíci

      Haha, glad you notice, but there is no foolery. Every now and then people ask the same question. It’s simple. The audio is recorded separately in a computer, then processed and restored if neccessary. While the video is captured with a camera. In the making of the video these are two separate files which have to be aligned again. Has always been the case, also in movie production were you se the use of a clapper. In some of my early videos of my channel I got several komments that it was taking to long before the music started. So for the respect of other peoples time, I meen they have other things to do than waiting 4-5 seconds for the music to start, I advance the sound so It’s starting immidiately. If you look closely you will se that there is i cut in the middle of the movie file were I overlap the now two parts of the movie file so that it ”catches up” the audio and they both end at the same time. No hoax just editing, speaking for my part at least :) (if you look at my last upload of Geraldine Farrar I think audio and video are better in sync)
