I wonder if this actually happened to Jay Adams, or something like it. Can imagine this punk kid (and I mean punk in an endearing way here) being approached by some suit and asked to sing this ridiculous jingle. Of course I would also imagine the real Adams going off on him and not being so 'measured 'in his dismissal lol.
I suspect this is an anecdotal scene based on how others were given richer endorsements while Adams family struggle with substance abuse issues and paying simple bills. The scene represents having very little to nothing, and having to do humiliating endorsements for silly or unrelated products. "I had to pay the bills" - Jay Adams character in Lords of Dogtown about 2/3 through the movie. They were scraping by while others were sober and had bigger endorsement contracts with various companies. It's essentially anti-drug commentary by the filmmakers. The Slinky audition was just the tip of the iceberg and it's much deeper than that. It's more than just not selling out, it's about scraping the bottom of the barrel in life while still knowing what your integrity limits are. He was low rent and so he got the pathetic Slinky offer while some of the others were getting major industry endorsements. He was never offered the same endorsements as some of the others Z-Boys and so he didn't have the liberty to even decline an offer. He was down and out and was a borderline hooligan at this age. His story is fascinating as is the whole Dogtown chapter. RIP Jay.
