Meet Us in the Middle Ages: The Crossroads of Everything
Medieval people made the modern world. Greek, Arab, and Latin natural philosophers built our scientific tradition. European poets and story-tellers invented vernacular literature while reading classical poetry and Middle-Eastern frame tales. Rabbis, priests, and imams-as they talked, and squabbled, with each other-constructed our religious traditions. Our representative democracies and university systems are essentially medieval institutions.
Notre Dame’s Medieval Institute, with fifty faculty fellows from thirteen different departments and an unparalleled library and growing manuscript collection, is the nation’s largest and most prestigious center for understanding the Middle Ages. Our conferences and lecture series bring the world’s leading scholars to campus, while our graduate and undergraduate programs train future medieval scholars and leaders in all walks of life.

ABOUT THE FELLOWSHIP
Each year, the Medieval Institute selects an outstanding young scholar for the A. W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship in Medieval Studies. The Fellowship allows a tenure-track assistant professor to pursue research leading to the publication of a monograph. At the conclusion of the Fellow's period of residency, a panel of senior scholars is invited to campus for a half-day public seminar discussion of the Fellow's research. The panelists spend additional time with the Fellow in one-to-one conversation and close reading of the draft.

Thank you, Mr. Peter Adamson, for this wonderful lecture. Indeed, the information (perceptions, concepts, doctrines) is very accurate and useful.
The relevance of which is as cloudy as the Dark Ages.
She should do Natasha Lyonne for halloween.
Чудово.
The only reason for interest in Islamic Philosophy is to learn how it killed science in the Islamic world. And the only reason for studying Christiian and Jewish philosophy is to find out how it almost destroyed science in the west. Such studies can provide a map of do's and don'ts. How to prevent philosophy from becoming subservient to theology.
Allah revealed this to me: "Islam is the fastest imploding religion in the world because more and more Muslims are realising that Mohammad and others (breakdown below) fabricated the Quran to persue their own personal agendas. Islam is nothing but 7th century Arabic tribalism. Muslims are much better and bigger than this oppressive ideology." 100% support to all Ex Muslims from 7 billion of us...Lovers of Truth. Breakdown of Quranic inputs as revealed to me by Allah... 10% Mohammad 30% Plagerised from Christian, Jewish and pagan texts. 60% Added on after Mohammad. 0% Allah.

this guy is a waffler, doesn't know diddly about the islamic tradition based on his comments on ghazali getting prophetic like knowledge - total nonsense never heard any academic say such a unfounded thing
He'd likely listen to your critiques and carefully consider them.
At 18:19, the speaker says, “Muslims had, by this time, adopted the doctrine that the Quran was Muhammad's sole miracle, one amply sufficient to prove that he was a genuine prophet.” Muslims don't believe that the Qur'an is Muhammad's (pbuh) sole miracle, only his greatest.
Very very valuable lecture. Gotta go the whole series now 👍 Thanks for sharing.

I WISH scholars like this would take a step back and NOT represent strange, fringe ideas as THE NORM. A text survives as a record BECAUSE it is a record and treated as one. A PRACTICE survives in a culture BECAUSE it is widely adopted. The bone head speaking represents the texts as normative behavior. IT WASN'T.
This is so interesting. This lecture deals with what I wanted to know about without having to hear it from a likely biased person. Thanks a ton for posting this.
This lecture deserves many more views
