Restoring Monticello's Flower Gardens
zhlédnutí 274Před 14 dny
In 1924 Monticello’s new owners began the process of restoring the gardens Jefferson had designed for his mountaintop home. But after a century of differing uses-and sometimes outright neglect-by various owners and caretakers, very little evidence remained of Jefferson’s original plans and plantings. It was a daunting task, and it could have ended quite differently were it not for the persevera...
Recreating a Spinning Jenny for Monticello
zhlédnutí 255Před 14 dny
Former Monticello guide and master woodworker Charles Morrill describes building a Spinning Jenny from scratch using only non-technical drawings and notes and a brief examination of one the few surviving examples in world. Jefferson has more than one Jenny at Monticello, which he hoped would increase the production of cloth in his small textile manufacturing operations.

Thank you for posting this, I meant to circle back and watch. I have a 1961 monograph on Prince Hall and a mass bay court case, I need to dig it out and follow up on that author's work. A scholar told me they had never gotten hold of it so I bought a print.

Why are _both_ doors required to be manually opened if there's the pulley system, which clearly works (mostly) to close both doors via the manual operation of only one door?

  • @stephanieashton8835

It's been several years, but I have absolutely no memory of those doors from our tour. I remember the clock, the narrow stairs, and the wine dumbwaiters, but nothing about doors.

For those disparaging the mask. Jefferson was very interested in public health, medicine and science. He was instrumental in the development of an improved smallpox vaccine championed its use. He would certainly have worn a mask and been one of the first in line for a Covid vaccine. So this is perfectly in character for the worldwide pandemic that was raging at the time of this recording.

I enjoyed and appreciated this podcast very much! Thank you so much for making it. :-) Hearing about the state of medical practices back in Jefferson's day makes me very thankful that medicine has progressed so much. The modern medical world may not be perfect but it's infinitely better than it used to be!!!

A popular saying: History is written by the winners. However... History written by the winners may not be objective. There is always some nonzero degree of subjectivity in any and all versions of History. 10 witnesses of some historical event: 10 separate versions of the Truth about said historical event. History of country X written by the citizens of X tends to be mythologized. Mythologizing is inevitable when the adult citizens want to raise their children to be good citizens of country X: country X is glorious!!! country X is magnificent!!! All sales pitch of any kind have a degree of untruth: overplay the good and underplay the bad. Mythologizing is a barrier to solving country X's problem. Mythologizing makes difficult the uncovering of the inconvenient Truth. Proper diagnosis before proper therapy. Do not expect the proper diagnosis to be good news. Do not expect the proper diagnosis to be hopeful bad news.

While not kept alive and active, it is reborn as a monument to him, and he did see himself as a god, and to something like a temple to him buy people who nearly think of him that way, his home, and also to him, a temple in D.C. of the Roman temple to all there gods, just for him alone. May be why he likes the dome?
