Hiking the Most Scenic Trail in the Grand Canyon
00:00 Intro
24:47 Ooh Aah Point
40:51 Cedar Ridge
50:14 O'Neill Butte
51:20 Trail Info
The South Kaibab Trail, known for its steep ridges and panoramic views, offers one of the most exhilarating hiking experiences in the Grand Canyon. Beginning near Yaki Point, this trail descends quickly, immediately immersing hikers in the sheer scale and beauty of the canyon. With its narrow path perched on a ridge, the trail offers uninterrupted, awe-inspiring vistas at every turn.
After just under a mile, you’ll reach Ooh Aah Point, a popular stopping point and the first real taste of the canyon’s grandeur. From here, you can see layers of ancient rock unfold before you, bathed in hues of red, orange, and gold. The trail continues, dropping into a series of steep switchbacks, with the open canyon yawning to either side. As you hike down, you pass through the signature layers of limestone, sandstone, and shale, each revealing its unique story etched into the rock.
Further along, the trail levels out briefly before winding toward Cedar Ridge, a flat, open area marked by its vibrant red dirt and scattered pinyon pine trees. Cedar Ridge is a perfect rest stop, offering panoramic views in all directions and a chance to soak in the silence and solitude of the canyon. Beyond Cedar Ridge, the trail descends once more, hugging the edge of ridgelines and offering sweeping views of the canyon below.
Continuing down the trail, O'Neill Butte comes into view, a striking rock formation rising out of the landscape like a fortress. The butte, named after early explorer Patrick O'Neill, stands as a testament to the canyon's rugged beauty. As you approach, you’ll notice the sheer walls and the weathered, craggy top, a reminder of the forces of erosion that continue to shape the Grand Canyon over millions of years.
Reaching O'Neill Butte feels like stepping into another world. The butte towers above the surrounding landscape, providing a dramatic viewpoint that allows you to look back up toward the rim, marveling at how far you’ve come. The silence is profound, broken only by the sound of wind against the rocks and the distant cry of a raven.

    Aloha! I just finished Kalalau! On my list for years and my first real backpacking trip, it was grueling! Havasupai looks similar in length, but much easier in technicality--am I wrong? Thank you

    • @TobyVisuals808
      @TobyVisuals808 Před 10 dny

      You are correct; it's not technical at all. The trail was well maintained, at least before the recent flash flood. One difference is that Havasupai has no water between Hilltop and Supai Village for 8 miles, and the extreme summer heat is a factor as well. Enjoy!

      @TobyVisuals808 Awesome! Thank you. I, pretty much, carried two Geo Press' and a 1 Liter bottle the whole time at Kalalau (in hindsight, I think I didn't trust the ability to capture water in late August) 8 miles. No water capture. Got it! Thank you

We spent 2 nights under a 8x8 tarp with sleeping bad and it worked great. But would recommend staying 3 night because we were wiped.

    Interesting you mentioned getting pain in the achilles. No surprises there, zero drop shoes can hurt if you're not used to them - most people have been walking / running with poor form their whole lives (including myself) because the heel to toe drop in most shoes is one of the causes of so many people's problems in the first place. People get pain because they're suddenly using muscles they've never used before! I've been transitioning to zero drop footwear for a while now and it can take time to get used to. Do yourself a huge favor and read Born to Run; it was the best thing I ever did and it explains so much. I like the shoes though..thanks for the review...
