The fools argue about flesh and meat, but they know nothing about meditation and spiritual wisdom. What is called meat, and what is called green vegetables? What leads to sin? It was the habit of the gods to kill the rhinoceros, and make a feast of the burnt offering. Those who renounce meat, and hold their noses when sitting near it, devour men at night. They practice hypocrisy, and make a show before other people, but they do not understand anything about meditation or spiritual wisdom. O Nanak, what can be said to the blind people? They cannot answer, or even understand what is said.

Also just to say - this book says so is a silly argument. I am a scientist and I can tell you that researchers don't know the answers. They might be considered 'experts' but they are often wrong e.g. thalidomide used for morning sickness in pregnancy caused limb deformities. Rather than saying this book or this study or research paper says so - you should critique everything you read and break down the logic, reasoning and justification. If your a Sikh i.e. a learner then you should never stop learning. As mentioned previously a Sikh is Dharmic and a protector - eating meat is not dharmic or protecting. It is 100% not allowed in Sikhism.

The sikh rehat maryada is a guideline, yes. But as Sikhs, we are firstly supposed to abide by our Guru's Hukam. These "scholars" are nothing compared to what the Guru has written in the Sri Guru Grant Sahib Ji. The rehat maryada may say that we can't eat Halal / religiously sacrificed meat, but there are several tukhs in SGGS that tell us to NOT eat meat. Eg : SGGS Page 141 "ਹਕੁ ਪਰਾਇਆ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਉਸੁ ਸੂਅਰ ਉਸੁ ਗਾਇ ॥ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੀਰੁ ਹਾਮਾ ਤਾ ਭਰੇ ਜਾ ਮੁਰਦਾਰੁ ਨ ਖਾਇ ॥ ਗਲੀ ਭਿਸਤਿ ਨ ਜਾਈਐ ਛੁਟੈ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਇ ॥ ਮਾਰਣ ਪਾਹਿ ਹਰਾਮ ਮਹਿ ਹੋਇ ਹਲਾਲੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਗਲੀ ਕੂੜੀਈ ਕੂੜੋ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥੨॥ To take what rightfully belongs to another, would be like a Muslim eating pork, or a Hindu eating beef. Our Guru, our Spiritual Guide, stands by us, if we do not eat those carcasses. By mere talk, people do not earn passage to Heaven. Salvation comes only from the practice of Truth. By adding spices to forbidden foods, they are not made acceptable. O Nanak, from false talk, only falsehood is obtained. ॥2॥" I am no one to judge another, but please, read the SGGS with full understanding before stating anything.
