The Netherlands Carillon, een Vergeten Monument
Toen ik in 2018 naar Washington DC verhuisde, ontdekte ik een roestige toren op een prachtige locatie. Het bouwwerk lag tussen Arlington National Cemetery en het beroemde Iwo Jima monument en in het verlengde van de monumenten op The Mall in Washington DC. Het bleek een Nederlands monument te zijn waar ik nog nooit van had gehoord: The Netherlands Carillon. Mij werd verteld dat het een cadeau was van Nederland aan de Verenigde Staten, als dank voor de Amerikaanse inspanningen tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Het bouwwerk was behoorlijk verroest en leek zelfs op instorten te staan. Wat was dit voor raadselachtig stukje Nederland in de VS? En waarom was de toren er zo slecht aan toe?
Ik ging op zoek naar het verhaal achter het carillon en kwam in contact met Diederik Oostdijk, hoogleraar Engelse literatuur aan de Vrije Universiteit van Amsterdam, die net een boek over het carillon aan het schrijven was. In mijn documentaire laat ik aan de hand van zijn onderzoek zien dat de klokkentoren van architect Joost Boks een prachtig naoorlogs kunstwerk is, waar je pas oog voor krijgt als je je verdiept in de turbulente geschiedenis van het stalen gevaarte. Ik besteed ook aandacht aan de toren als muziekinstrument en maak duidelijk wat een carillon betekent voor de Nederlandse identiteit. En ik kijk terug op de Tweede Wereldoorlog met een 98-jarige veteraan in New York, die me leert wat de symbolische waarde is van The Netherlands Carillon.

A multitude of robots is being developed right now for these kinds of purposes. With care personnel becoming scarcer every year, they're going to need assistant robots just to keep up with everything. And as a bonus the robots can also do the heavy lifting, actually there are already patient-lifting robots in use in some hospitals so the personnel doesn't have to retire at 50 because of a broken body.
The man is amazing, he has so much musical talent and instead of keeping it for a high class he shares it in such a humble and dutch way. You can tell he does it for his love for music, the audience participation and the magic spells a city can sometimes bring. Mad respect
