Anyone who's watched the OG series and movies knows they all used to take the subway when they first met. Carrie and Charlotte met on the subway. Miranda still takes the subway since moving to Brooklyn. These women are middle age and rich and complain they never leave the island of Manhattan (remember how they talk about Brooklyn, Queens, Coney Island, etc.) so their taxi rides around the city is part of their brand.

I never thought that NYC sitcoms with no black main characters were about us. (Friends, Seinfeld, Sex and the City). That did not mean I did not enjoy them though. However, I REALLY enjoyed Living Single and Girlfriends because they were funny AND relatable. Sassy does not offend me though and both shows had plenty of sassy black women to go around. I like your analysis of colorism in And Just Like That though. I noticed pretty quickly that they were trying to make it more inclusive in general for the reboot. I did a search and they apparently have/had at least 1 black writer - Samantha Irby. I would love to hear what she had to say about the topic of colorism in the show, how much authority she actually had, and even casting choices. But I have a job and a family so I don't have the time to do the investigative journalism to find out. Full disclosure, I saw season 1, but I am currently not streaming HBOMax because Paramount + is giving me a discount so they get my money this month and I intentionally limit how much money I waste on entertainment.

Honestly i think the thing you said about pre-teens/young teens not having *ANY* rep in media is so true but not just for black girls(coming from a 13yo black girl myself) but for ALL teens and pre teens. The reason you hear so many kids saying they wished they were teens back in the 2000 and 10s, is cuz you guys had SO MANY SHOWS FOR TEENS AND PRE-TEENS😭😭 like I've just been watching clips from shows like Daria, Tia and Tamera and more but like we have absolutely NO shows like that for our age to talk about. in between shows for pre teens and tees are a neglected genre:(

The criticisms of this movie are valid in my opinion. I just think when we analyze these movies we need to take into account another factor. Disney’s target audience to market to would most likely not be black (insert “The white gaze”.) I think Disney was less concerned about appealing to black people as some may have thought when the movie came out.

It was a joke in the original series that once Miranda moved to Brooklyn with Brady and Steve she would have to take the subway to visit the other girls in Manhattan.

I just literally finished this show today and was at awe with how good it was and I was sleeping on it for 7yrs!! The show is definitely not talked about enough!

Your analysis proves that the show is imitating life, regarding colorism. Lighter skin people experience the privileges that are reflected on the show. They tend to do better socioeconomically due to the privileges of being closer to whiteness phenotypically. It would have been great if they challenged the image by swapping the characters, but unfortunately the show presents a great example of colorism in society.

Most professors are not rich. The likelihood of seeing someone with a PhD married to a professional musician sporting a boho look is far more likely than looking like one of Truman Capote's Swans. And trust me, if you live in the city, you will take the subway. Even if you're making a pretty good living, when traffic is ridiculous, you will hop on the subway. It is not just for poor people.

Why couldn't the first black princess be an actual princess? instead of always depicting black girls as hustling and doing grunt work, why couldn't she have been a Nubian princess or a princess from the kingdom on Mansa Musa, one of the wealthiest men in history? The truth is mainstream media doesn't want black to be associated with historical wealth and excellence

I also find it interesting how MPK always has to (dark) black characters as financially struggling/unglamorous whereas for example when depicting anyone or anything Jewish/Israeli-related the depictions are always ultra glam, characters (ie Harry) are always depicted as perfect fathers without any moral flaw even if a tad goofy, but still just 'good' and 'reliable' characters.

Love your pov! Also the main thing that bothered me so much that it made the show almost unwatchable to me was how uncomfortable the original SATC characters were shown to be around black characters. Almost like it's the first time they're having to be around black people and don't know what to say or how to behave. It sends the subliminal message that black people don't truly belong to the world of the characters we know and love and they are only now having to get acquainted with this very 'foreign' group of people.

As a Filipino-Caucasian American woman, I've got to say that the utter lack of representation of my people ANYWHERE is wicked disheartening. From looking at the media landscape, you think we don't even exist, anywhere. I've yet to see a book that's specifically about the Filipino-American experience, even. I've read anthology books by difference writers telling the stories of their experiences and volume after volume i encounter maybe one story if at all. I can't say that i can even imagine aa day when I'd encounter a story in film or anywhere else that centers me, and that's really sad.

I enjoyed your critique of the show and a lot of it was on point, but you spent the entire commentary saying that Nicole is "biracial" when she's not. All light skinned black people are not biracial. You know what the deal is when it comes to that. Even if she were, you cannot quantify her blackness or her experience as a black woman because of her lighter skin. My green-eyed grandma used to say that as far a s her experience with white folk - she was just "another shade of ninja". Also, please realize that the construction and inclusion of these "black" characters was not focused on giving black viewers relatable characters, but rather depicting the way in which white people see and experience us. It can never be balanced or an accurate portrayal when the voices narrating the story is that of white women. If it was cringe - it was meant to be so. But here's another position for you to consider when it comes to the casting of certain roles: sometimes the best actor for the role is the best actor for role - and if that best actor happens to fall into a particular stereotype - then that's a cross you have to decide to carry as a casting director - or choose the lesser actor to avoid criticism but then loose critical nuances in a character/acting. As a person who was once involved in theatre production, I can tell you that it happens more often than you think. . . peace sis.

Miranda and Steve’s arc was all about Miranda being so broken by Steve’s cheating betrayal, and then mending it, working together to confront it, then she goes back on her own values with Chay? They made her such a weak character dependent on affection. It’s a literal character destruction. If they wanted her to be attracted to Che, fine, then have her and Steve as separated, which could have happened, but amicable.

This is an excellent analysis. I was wondering if I was the only person that noticed the colorism. But I really like the new characters. I like Bobby Lee and his black wife. The only one I don’t like is Che. I’m sad Nyla won’t be back.

I absolutely LOVE Sex and The City!!! It's the friendship for me. Also, it showed alot of issues that women go through like breast cancer, infertility, abortion, adoption, etc. They should've never done AJLT without Samantha! As much as I love Nicole Ari Parker, I couldn't help but wonder, why couldn't a dark skinned black woman be LTW?! Nicole Ari Parker is racially ambiguous. Why did the professor Naia (the darker woman) have to be the struggling renter. Smh

I seem to remember her being the most attractive and likeable character in that movie...I'm not the best person to recommend romance movies though, as I seem to fall for the tear-jerk moments even when they're poorly written and predictable.😅
