    Hello friend, I have a question, out of context. I have a Seagate Barracuda ES HDD, (3 platters) but I removed the internal parts, leaving only the Motor and the Logic Board (control) because I would like to use it for a Mini Sander but, after removing just the needle assembly, the Motor does not run (before it was running normally). I've tried several ways, connecting pins 2-6 and 3-5 with a jumper, but there's no way to get it to turn. Could it be that this type of HD only works with the needle assembly in place? Please let me know if you have any tips on this; Thank you.

    I've been trying to repair this hard drive for hours. It wasn't until you said that these Seagate hard drives had the resting position NEAR THE CENTER that it clicked me. I've been trying to pull it AWAY from the center like with other brands. You're a life saver.

    to get it free just spin the platter counter-clockwise with a screwdriver (never touch the platter !) and gentely slide the heads out from as close to their base as you can to not disturb the needles

    Thanks for the video, but I really wish you would have shown moving the head back to it's resting place. I rotated the platter and got the head to move, but the head stops right at the edge of platter, and won't budge off of it.

    • @focumQuarium
      @focumQuarium Před 3 lety

      Same here. There is yellow plastic at the base of head preventing it to move. As if that head has to always be on platter.

    • @focumQuarium
      @focumQuarium Před 3 lety

      Just checked it: when you have disk cover open, the head will move back and forth (not leaving the surface of platter), emitting 5 beeps in a row and eventually disk stop trying and shut down. If you screw the cover of disk (those 2 long screws), I think there is some mechanism - disk will freely rotate, no beeps. That yellow obstruction in head's base seems to be lifted or pressed down enabling free head movement. Another thing to note here is: with this disk, head doesn't seem to leave the platter surface at all. I parked it close to center and close the lid. Disk rotates without any bad noise. I think this model of Seagate disks have 3 TB capacity out of box but throttled to 1 TB, as a result they don't care about the outer edges of the disk - it might even be physical restriction there. I wonder what happens if someone removes that yellow obstruction from there: if that would unlock 3TB capacity, I wouldn't be surprised. But of course this would damage the disk, coz there is no resting stand outside platter area for heads to sit on. Very dirty mechanical throttling all in all.

    Hi Your Mom Your Mom, Do you have replies turned off? I can't seem to reply or tag you in my comment. Or maybe CZcams has a comments issue right now. This drive actually did not have a head in that position. It’s not abnormal for hard drives to have an odd number of heads, as head and platter counts depend on the size of the drive the manufacturer is making within that particular drive family. And yes, this is a drive that has failed heads.

      @NelsonBigGunP200Fan Před 7 lety

      those STDM drives have had a lot of issues failing just out of the blue. It sounds like platter damage. was it recoverable

  • @NelsonBigGunP200Fan
    @NelsonBigGunP200Fan Před 9 lety

    did that lose the top head before you got it ? Sounds like a headcrash as i can hear it buzzing

  • @peterwillymcjohnsonator7837

    the heads have crashed on the platters making the drive useless. Recovery could be possible, but it may be very expensive, the platters are damaged causing that buzzing noise.

  • @JakeCheng98
    @JakeCheng98 Před 9 lety

    What'a the average price to get this fixed?

    • @Datarecoverycom
      @Datarecoverycom Před 9 lety

      Jake Cheng It’s difficult to say without seeing it because there can be different underlying causes to a drive’s heads making this sound, possibly failures of more than just one component, parts may be required or not, etc. We base our cost of recovery on these things... basically how difficult it is to recover. The range can be big so we don’t give averages normally. If you send it in, we’ll evaluate it for free and list the recovery cost and you don’t have any obligation to continue. Here is info about our single drive service - datarecovery.com/services/hard-drive-data-recovery/ . By the way, nice icon. I've played lots of COD myself :)

    I just get this problem with the same device in July 10th

    • @Datarecoverycom
      @Datarecoverycom Před 9 lety

      Jake Cheng Hi Jake, sorry to hear that! If you need your data back from the drive, I really recommend you not run it anymore since it may cause more physical damage. Research a few data recovery companies (they will need to have a clean room for physical repairs), maybe call and see which you're comfortable with. Most do not charge for evaluations to figure out recovery cost. We have the capabilities to recover it, our number is in the caption. Good luck!
