Union Pacific M-10,000 Maiden Voyage
zhlédnutí 44Před 14 hodinami
Union Pacific's M-10,000 streamliner took a tour of America, being one of the first streamliner. Known as the "City of Salina", was also known as "Little Zip". Made of aluminum, when the World War II broke out, the railroad felt it had served it's purpose and scaped it out for the war effort. The city in which it is sitting in in this video is unknown, same as the photographer.

1933 Chicago Worlds Fair
zhlédnutí 103Před 9 měsíci
1933 Chicago Illinois Worlds Fair was full of excitement and wonder. From the high towers, with the gondola's passing back and forth, to the latest and greatest inventions to ever be assembled up to this date. To early for color film, it's a shame, I can't imagine the colors. Right now at 90 years old, it was a time to forget the depression and look towards the future.

Days before computers, Television and color photos in magazines, you had to go to the expositions to see the latest and greatest and in color too. The Chicago Worlds Fair had something for everyone. It was the age of invention and the world was not yet at war. Commercial photo color film would not be available till around 1939.

The only way to get the gold out and bring the people and goods in, was to use the 3 foot gauge railroads. The Rocky Mountains and other various ranges in Colorado, was a task for only the Strong-At-Heart should undertake. There's gold in Thar-Hills, and men would do anything to bring it out.

This type of locomotive is really nice. A shame they can't restore the prototype. Sometimes when I look at the train bridge in my area, I can imagine a 9000 class pulling boxcars.

The cop on the three wheeler his name was Jim Long. He patrolled downtown and wrote parking tickets. I drove a city bus there for years. Where Cherry street is located, that used to be a canal. It had barges that brought raw materials from the Wabash to factories located in the area. The barges were mule drawn and one of the things they brought to a particular factory was mussels that were dredged for then hauled to a button factory via the barges. In that same Terre Haute House area was a brewery, a dairy processing plant and ice cream factory and of course Clabber Girl. I remember Sears and Roebucks was right next door to J.C. Penney. That was when they had the old black men sitting on stools in the elevators operating them. You would pay for your purchase, the clerk would put your money in a metal can and hook it on a chain that took it up a flight to a cash office and return your change the same way.

By the way, if any of you thought it was scrapped no it is in rail Giants train Museum located in Pomona California they open every time La County fair opens they restore the trains they have more familiar ones like 3450 Santa Fe engine and 5021 another famous engine you can blow the whistles and ring the bells Southern Pacific 5021 is allowed whistle so you cannot blow it at the museum. It is a special thing that you could do and rare. And the diesel that they were replaced big boy 4014 yes, this place is the home of Big boy 4014 if you’re in California, it’s one of the best museums to go to located in the corner it’s like a secret gem at yellow gate near the police station

So sad there's really nothing left of this in charles city. I remember theine still had tracks in the early 80s down to marble rock. I don't think they had been pulled up yet. Not sure i remember the path to Cowell. I think the track right of way is now a bicycle trial around chuck town, but no left over right of way to marble rock or Cowell.

Omg, CB&Q 637 is my favorite locomotive in existence. It used to sit in a park in Aurora a block away from my first house. It was taken away shortly before I was born. But I always admired pictures my parents had of it, and it was always my favorite thing to see at the Illinois Railway Museum. I never would’ve guessed any footage of it actually running existed. Thank you so much for the video!!!

Steam engines were so inconsistent engine-to-engine (not through the fault of the manufacturers, just the nature of them) that they really did seem to have personalities - no two of any class run quite the same.

I'm a fireman for a tourist steam railroad and I can tell you that they for sure have personalities. We have two sister engines, both mallets, and they fire and run incredibly different from each other. They also have good days and bad days. Sometimes they're in a great mood and fire hot and pull well, and other days you have to fight the heck out them to make it up the steep hills.

I was at LaGrange Road in 1959 when #6315 and #5632 pulled in westbound. The noise and the smoke was unreal and literally buried everything in smoke and steam for blocks around. I also rode the 1964 "Gold" special behind #5632. IMHO It is nothing short of shameful that no CB&Q main line engines, the S-4 and O-5, are even being considered for operational restoration even though many are on static display waiting for the call.

I noticed the scene where the engineer and conductor checked their watches. This was very important, as they had to run the trains according to the schedule to prevent collisions, etc.. I recall, from when I worked at CN, the crews could not adjust their watches. That would be done by a local jeweler hired by the railroad. I also recall a synchronized pendulum clock, with mercury filled pendulum weights, to regulate the clock. These days, the local light rail lines use Network Time Protocol (NTP), with a GPS receiver for stratum 0, as the clock source.
