Gibson vs Taylor vs Norman
zhlédnutí 862Před 10 měsíci
Today I wanted to record a quick video. It turned into a long video. I play my late 60s Gibson hummingbird, a Norman ST 50 and a Norman ST 40 that I’ve had for about six months and a brand new Taylor 214ce Deluxe. What do you all like about the sound of each of them. I think the Gibson has the woodiest tone however, the Norman ST 40 has a very powerful mid range. the Norman ST50 on the other ...

Welcome and thank you for stopping by today. I typically don’t like to badmouth companies or products on my channel and I am a small and very humble channel. I do this for fun and to share what I learned with others. That being said, I need to warn everyone that the quality or lack of quality on these new Epiphone acoustics, its staggering. I don’t mean to badmouth any of the literal hundreds i...

Today we’re looking at the Toneking Gremlin. I have tried to give an example of what the amplifier sounds like with multiple guitars. My modest set up may not be as professional as the next channel, however I pay for everything I review so I going to be straight with you. Please feel free to like and subscribe.

There were some made in Indonesia and then they were made in China. The ones made in China are pure shit. The ones made in Indonesia are mostly all good.
Holy crap! You made that the nicest sounding Aria I've ever heard! Are those just standard Antiquities?!
Yes just standard antiquities. But remember you also have to change the wiring harness as well.
@@6stringlounge813 I'd been thinking of giving RS Guitarworks a shot for some time now. I'm definitely sold on them now!
man that was killer very skilled player and that tone is so good!
Plywood sounding knockoff. Yuck
Sorry you got a cracked back and a bad experience. Usually these guitars are masterpieces. James
Good playing, you’re doing metalish licks…but the tone is not metal.
From what I could tell a lot of the natural finishes are made in China. But the sunburst Indonesia model is a lot better quality.
Strange, mine is perfect and the sound is excellent, but it was made in Indonesia, not China so that may be the culprit
Bummer. Just send it back , it is an inexpensive import relative to your 'real' Hummingbird. The crack is likely from the same cause as the appearance of the bridge, just dry wood. Happens to 10K instruments if not in stable humidity environment. On the box label is likely a production date. That one sat in a warehouse for a long while I am betting. I just bought a Alvarez baritone on sale for 30% off ($550) and like my $4k Martins, ALL needed setup. Nut, , truss rod then Saddle, 4 frets leveled and crowned. Finally after action set, intonated the saddle the hard and tedious way (file and trial). New strings of course, Martin Phosphor Bronze. Learn to do your own setups and you can make it yours with a minimal investment in a few tools. All those skill can be easily learned on YT or elsewhere. It is just wood and metal bits. If you fear harming a good guitar go get a couple of pawn shop junkers to practice skills. It is all pretty basic. My Alvarez had a production date of 2022 on the box, sealed from factory. Bridge and fretboard dry, oiled with F1 Oil and all good. Otherwise in good shape. Probably similarly caused body cracks in your guitar too. Unless you are buying a boutique experience for a high priced instrument you can expect to do a setup or maybe more on ANY new axe. I bought a guitar from Artisan Guitars in Nashville couple of years ago and had an appointment, they had it on a stand ready and tuned, and when I said I didn't like the action height they swapped out the saddle and it was what I wanted, so I bought it. But import guitars do not see that level of care or value added service. Yea, you are pissed off and disappointed. BTDT. It was stored badly in a warehouse in all probability . My sister had a USA Guild Jumbo 12 string fall apart when her daughter put it in a garage in Texas summer heat when she was away. I was able to restore it but it was months of work.
Got this amp so i didnt have to use a od or gain pedal. Enough options on the amp alone with 6 channel switcher. All my guitars sound amazing through this amp. I have just a chorus and a delay in the loop. Otherwise all amp
Fender and Marshall amp combos are great. I have a Fender Blues Deluxe and a Marshall DSL40CR. Mostly I use the Fender as clean amp and switch to the Marshall for dirt. The clean channel on the Marshall sounds great but there isn’t as much character and depth as the Fender. Mixing both of them together sounds amazing. They totally complement each other. Sometimes I will run the Marshall on the classic crunch with thr Fender completely clean and it sounds so cool. If I can be loud enough to push the blues deluxe into distortion on the clean channel I will mix the two amps and it sounds great.
You've been unluckily. It wasn't packed well. Just send it back and try before you buy. I've just got a J45 1942 banner IBG. I't's a great guitar with nil issues. On the back of that l purchased sight unseen (something l never do usually) the Epi Excellente. An abdolute tond monster, beautifully made and arrived in perfect order. You were just unlucky. When RandysRythm reviewed his IBG Hummingbird he had the absolute opposite view than yours. Just got a bad Friday afternoon badly shipped product. Not good enough but to say that everyone whose been raving about Epi IBG acoustics are full of xxxx is untrue and very disrespectful
Just bought a second hand Norman B20 in excellent condition but broke my wrist before I could play it. Can't wait to play it. I also have a Simone and Patrick, and a Godin classical all from the same company. Love them all.
I can't really dispute that your guitar had issues. I suppose there are some QC issues related to Epiphone guitars, but I can also attest to the fact that when you get a good one, well set up, they do sound very good. I own one of the IBG Hummingbirds and it's honestly one of my favorite guitars. I also own a Martin D35 and a D18, as well as a custom made dread from a local luthier. The Epiphone just sounds really good! I bought mine locally, so there's that. I did get to look it over first. If you consider some of the nightmares people have encountered buying Gibson guitars, or the bindings coming apart on Martin guitars, etc., really, it's crap shoot anyway. I also owned a $3,000 Taylor guitar that sounded like I was playing it under water. I just ordered one of the new 1957 Epiphone SJ200 models and I'm looking forward to seeing how it plays and sounds. If it's not good, it will go back to the dealer.
I’m uninspired by your cranky review. Mine is perfect
My Hummingbird Inspired by Gibson is a great guitar instead.....
My 93 standard against my 04 Gibson epiphone easy winner
It's amazing how Distortion makes us better players
lol, right
Excellent presentation and representation of how this amp performs without all the BS. Great job.
Thank you kindly!
Why is the top 2 different colors? I've got a Gibson Hummingbird Rosewood Studio and you can't even tell where the top is joined and that's with an nitro finish. I had a 2006 Hummingbird and regret letting that go also my Dove but these guitars are nowhere near the same quality. Also, a Sono-tone pickup? That's the pickup Martin uses on $500. guitars. These should have a better pickup at the price they are charging for these.
Some of those are nice guitars if you know which ones to look for and some are made with plywood. My biggest complaint with the older Epiphones is the shitty fret wire they used. It was soft for the most part nickle. If you really like an older epiphone and you play it a lot it's going to need a refret much sooner than later.
How can you activate crunch, push my crunch button in and it pops right back out, as well as i hear no difference?
Sounds like you have a bad channel switching relay. They are Chinese made amps so this has been known to happen, and I would recommend getting it serviced under warranty if possible. If the warranty is no longer valid, it is a relatively easy repair. Luckily the Marshall DSL 40 CR is a relatively easy amp to service so most technicians will work on it.
That hiss would drive me nuts
Thats beautiful. I have an old black std epi LP with seymour Duncans. Its great.
Std? Lmaoooo
Or you could just ship it back for another one 😂
What are other amps you considered buying? Good video.
I’m always looking at valve train amps. These days the amp either Has to be cheap and well-made or it Has to be turret board at least. A lot of the printed circuit boards that are produced are pretty horrible. I’d rather spend more in the beginning and have something that lasts a lifetime and is serviceable rather than a bunch of moderately priced junk, but I also still gig, so whatever I buy needs to hold up. The best stamps for gigging though are getting an old 70s silver face twin, deluxe or super reverb. Take that amp to a tech and have them bring it up to current spec and you’re good for the rest of your life.
Love these amps but only on the clean and crunch channels all the high gain channels are really bad but it takes pedals great , I run mine into a 4x12 Friedman cab
Running it into a 412 cab is a great idea. I found that over the years of gigging mine The speaker has really opened up. But I never run it on the highest of gain!
@@6stringlounge813I own a couple, and hav played a bunch , some definitely sound better then others .
I guess you’ll just have to play the actual Gibson Hummingbird you claim to have at all the gigs you claim to have lined up. Sucks to be you, man.
Once they got good reviews from the launch they may have cut back on quality control. Many people rely on the reviews and don't know enough to spot the problems.
Ya got a nice touch with that LP.
You make that thing sing !
Interesting. The Indonesian IBG Hummingbirds get rave reviews but we know the production has moved to China and have been waiting for news of how the quality might be affected. I recently bought an IBG J-45 and it is (was) amazingly good. It has the factory code 23 so it's from Indonesia. I play a few different ways and this box does them all very well indeed. For £500 new it's a steal, or seemed to be. OK, the pickup is basic and it's a bit boomy plugged in but I bought it purely for acoustic sessions and for that it's first-rate. Really good, very versatile. Unfortunately, a couple of days ago the jack socket suddenly came loose and that is a real nuisance. Can't use the guitar until that's fixed. Update: it's fixed. I now have an excellent acoustic guitar.
You lost me when you said you will have to cancel some gigs you had lined up because you are unhappy with a new guitar you just recieved? Just think about that...
🤣 that's what l thought, a pro musician with only the one "piece of junk" from Epi and then he shows us his "real" Gibbo Hummingbird. Hilarious.
Perfect practice amp, quiet without tone loss.
How does it compare to the Laney Lionheart?
I’ve never played a Lionheart, however, it’s one of the best clean sounds I’ve ever heard. It’s on par with many of my vintage Fender amps from the 60s and 70s. The overdrive sound is good for blues and light Classic Rock anything heavier you’ll need to use it overdrive, pedal or boost.
@@6stringlounge813the Lionheart is one of the cleanest you have ever heard or the Gremlin? These are the two I am looking at buying soon.
Watch Randy’s Rhythm video on u-tube STOP a follow up on the epiphone hummingbird ibg . You and him or on the same page about the guitar you just bought. Believe you will enjoy this video. It sure enough got me to thinking. Thanks Jeff
Are your fith and 6th serial numbers 23
Mine are, so it's from Indonesia. Struck lucky there.
His is “Made in Indonesia”. It’s clearly visible in the back of the headstock towards the end of the video.
Great interview man / sorry about your experience. Just wondering if it was made in China. Thanks
Yes it was
Just sent it back, tried several different models from the series at a local shop. They were all pretty bad.
Not a p90 rather a blues90 which has alnico magnets and less windings than a p90. They are very different.
The whole problem is your fault! Buying a guitar on line is the worst thing to do! NEVER buy a guitar sight unseen! The way to buy is to hit the stores. Try out as many as it takes until you find the right one! Not all guitars are made perfect. It just doesn't happen! Gibson, Taylor, Martin and others build something like 15,000 guitars a year! There's no way everyone of them is perfect because they're factory made on CNC machines. Out of 15,000 about 2,600 are sub standard. It's a fact! If a music store has ten Gibsons I won't say"I'll buy any one of those Gibson's"! No! There might be two I'll want to buy and the rest don't appeal to me! It's a fact!
I guess you ended up with a lemon. I ordered one from Zzounds and it was perfect for me right out of the box with the exception of my replacing the strings with Elixirs. My frets are well finished and I did the nylon stocking test without any issues. She holds tune extremely well, sounds fantastic and plays like a dream.
This guys bad attitude came out long before the guitar did.
Yeah! You can see right away he's gonna' insult them. "I wouldn't even use it for firewood"!
You remind me of some Steve Howe…
Thank you very much
@@6stringlounge813 -Love your playing!
that gibson is 1950’s the guitar looks to be new was it kept in case?
What a beautiful, beautiful melody. I was taken by surprise at how absolutely beautiful this performance was. Nice guitars, too.
Thank you very much!
Just started watching your cannel. You look so young to have all your knowledge about tone... All of your guitars and amps sound so good thru your videos. Keep them coming.
Wow, thanks! 🙏
I own several and yes there's a difference after you set them up, the nut cut is critical. Way to light it u up and play the whole 9 yards. Rock on!!!!😮
How about a demonstration? Play something and let the viewers judge for themselves. Better yet, let's see you play something on your Gibson Hummingbird and then follow with the same tune on the Epiphone. C'mon man, let's see it. 😏
Eastmans j45 style models are superb, and come at different price points depending wood. From Sapele to mahogany to rosewood. They are in another class to the epiphone IBG I played. I found the Epi on the heavy side too.
Absolutely fantastic ❤😊
Thank you!
