You people commenting about this troublemaker, violent, agressive, radical commie like Abbie Hoffman was a terrible SOB man. He may have been a jew hatemonger. I believe he just wanted to get attention from protestors during the 60's critical times, gathering the protests against the Vietnam wars. Let me all remind you that Hoffman and sen dem Sanders from Vermont State were friends, partners. Well, Hoffman may had been in jail few times, then he killed himself.

Abbie, RIP, did not "lead" us. That is just medias only way to deal with things, every social movement must have leaders and followers because that's all they know. Sorry. Not what was going on. Abbie was the face, the voice, because he was good at it and gave the media what they needed to get us in mainstream media. He did not devise a way to get hippies into revolutionary politics, we were there, the State did that. He rode the wave and was a good organizer, as were Anita, Paul Krassner, and all the other initial Yippie organizers. We were a movement that did not feel the need to argue consensus with FBI plants (as destroyed Occupy), did not need someone telling us what we all knew was had in common. You may never understand this, you needed to LIVE it. Abbie Hoffman was a focal point and an inspiration, he was the lightening rod. No more no less.

Anyone could change the world, before Abbie Hoffman. And anyone can change the world, after Abbie Hoffman. The people against Communism actually agreed with Hoffman's individualist stance, that the individual has rights. That is what our U.S. Constitution stands for - individual freedom, not Communism. So Abbie Hoffman was protesting -- nothing. What he **was** doing was making theatre, absurdist theater that upper middle class students could participate in. They always had rights, before Hoffman and after. And let me tell you a secret: there is no counterculture. There is only the underbelly of society masquerading as counterculture. You will find this out.

Excellent comment. Hoffman had an idealistic message that he preached, but behind it there was nothing- nihilism, maybe, but I suspect not even that. It was self-indulgent theatre masquerading as activism and it accomplished little. Reading the writings of Hoffman and Rubin at the time reveal this- they were full of idealised depictions of communist and Marxist ideals (particularly Luxemburgism and Maoism)... as well as yearnings for a stripped-down anarchistic libertine individualism. It was all totally contradictory, a very confused, immature message. The worst aspect of all of this is that groups like the Yippies and the SDS - and the New Left as a whole - provided the foundations on which two of the worst aspects of the late 20th & early 21st century were built: neoliberalism, and 'SJWs.' Rubin in the '80s talked openly about how his Yippie ideals evolved naturally into support for neoliberalism, and he was not alone- most neoliberals in politics and the media grew out of the New Left. Those New Left/counterculture figures who embedded themselves in academia also helped train the new generation of campus radicals who are even more psychotic with their myopic obsession with race and identity politics. SJWs are the retarded bastard child of the '60s counterculture, without any of the misguided good intentions. It's time for a radical conservative counterculture to undo the long-term damage that the Left of the '60s and '70s unleashed on us today.

JAFdolls Abbie Hoffman was the unorganized voice, of a multimillion base of young adults and kids simply wanting the VN war over. Saying what we couldn't articulate, what he didn't actually do in words. He used actions. Some good, some a bit less. These were halcyon days of drugs. Hoffman was wild and undisciplined. And I can say this, because its my history. I didn't learn it, I lived it. I had the front row seat. Abbie Hoffman stirred the pot, he does what 4chan does today. Milo is a bit like him, only much more articulate. A bit more class. A bit less acid.

Bring together???? In physical proximity maybe. In appearance maybe. But beyond that, the dynamics are not really a coming together. Let's leave musicians out of the equation for the moment. Most long haired musicians (including myself) were real hippies. Sincere about wanting peace and love and all that. And most hippies were real hippies too. But not all, by any means. But when you get down to "radicals" there are all sorts of weird variables. So many, and so weird, that it's really impossible to make any true generalizations. As for the yippies in particular, they were skilled at infiltration, and at influencing and eventually taking control over others. But that's not the same thing as "bringing together". It's more like vampires who are always looking to draw others into their world, but then they put an end to the world of their victims. That's not really coming together. If you let yippies into your group, pretty soon it's their group and its gone all weird and dark and evil.
