Pacific Ocean Park (or simply P.O.P.) was a seaside amusement park built on a pier in Santa Monica, CA. It operated from 1958 to 1967 before being abandoned and eventually demolished. The infamous "Dogtown" surfing and skateboarding scene rose from its ashes in the 1970's as well. Enjoy this rarely seen glimpse into the past! If there is such a thing he seems naturally sweet person!!
Guy said " they told Brian in Sunday school to turn the other cheek he took that serious when he was slapped he turned his cheek so many times his heads twisted on sideways" !!
I remember going on this and always squatting on the way down as a kid. I remember corkscrew too. Knows was good in the 80s to early 90s
Happy (late) 82nd Birthday Brian ♡
this aged perfectly
I think if Dennis knew what kind of technology we have today, like flatscreens, Smartphones etc. i think he would freak out or be dissapointed
Brian: "No, I never got to meet John" John (1974): "We met many times! He's not well you know!"
The album he's talking about is the unreleased Adult/Child album which many of the tracks ended up on the M.I.U. Album which was one of their biggest flops.
I diden’t know that they had a song about a tomboy as one i can’t wait to hear it
Great to hear an interview discussing some technical details of how sounds are produced, and additionally, such a great conversation. Very much different from the banality that most similar interviews cover today.
John Lennon never really thought Srgt. Peppers as a concept album, there was only 2 songs that fit together Srgt. Peppers and the reprise. The rest look to be just radom songs. But this isnt the convept. The concept is that its the introduction of Billy the new leader of the band taking over. Each song has a tie to either bio Paul's death, the actual event or the aftermath. "I am the hero of the story, Willaim Shepherd" "Memoirs if Billy Shears"
I think if they had stuck Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields on the record they probably would have been more inspired to continue the concept instead of halting it after pepper.
What a legend - Bob Harris ! Who's the guy with the beard ? ok two legends.
I'm so grateful I got to see him sing Pet Sounds live with an orchestra. Even debilitated, he still had his tremendous presence.
Same here, saw him in Virginia a few years ago. He and the band sounded great
This was such fun to listen to. Dennis seemed to be very down to earth. I wish he could’ve been with us longer. Thanks for posting! ❤️
You're welcome!
I love how he slides in “of course I’m a millionaire” talking about coke 😆
My first goal to make people happy 🥰 what an amazing guy
Love ❤️ Dennis ❤️🥲
Thanks for posting
Yes,wouldn't it be nice if dennis could be at peace, not easy.
Dennis was a dreamer, but not the only one.
I remember I went on Windjammer as a kid & my head bumped around on the vertical restraints - I hated the ride ever since & never rode it again. Good riddance XD I absolutely miss the parachute ride, Whirlpool & the time travel ride (which at the time I found the crackling noise to be really loud, but now it's kinda nostalgic)
I love this guy man. So down to earth
Brian is a musical genius and we love u!❤
He’s a genius songwriter. But when he heard the Beatles Sgt. Pepper he was aghast because he knew they had reached another level and he was competing with three great songwriters. He got depressed and used LSD and was living in bed because he couldn’t cope. Macca said Pet Sounds inspired Sgt. Pepper and they are mutual admirers. I can’t blame Wilson because no one has ever surpassed Sgt. Pepper to this day so it was an impossible idea.
McCartney heard Pet Sounds and was completely blown away by it, and thats why the made St. Pepper.
sgt pepper might be more iconic and have more pizazz, but pet sounds is absolutely a better album musically IMO
Agree completely. But doesn’t a great deal of evidence point to the likelihood of SMiLE trumping Sgt. Pepper? Sure the Beatles might’ve beat him to the concept album but they struggled to hang onto the concept throughout the albums runtime, from what we have of the 1967 SMiLE sessions, if it was anything it seemed consistent from song to song. Wouldn’t it be more accurate to blame the environment Brian was working in for his mental decline? Having your band mates (family in his case), putting almost an entire years worth of work down and constantly questioning he and his songwriting collaborator, Van Dyke Parks’ artistic merit, seeing it all as a risk to their brand and an overall financial blow. Feel like anyone dealing with that level of retaliation would buckle under all that pressure. Then on top of all that, Sgt Pepper coming out, of course the guy was gonna be like, “how can I follow that?” When little did he know he had the perfect response written and almost finished in the studio all whilst his band and the label wouldn’t let him release it. You’ve gotta feel for the guy.
@@godzuki86 Beach Boys sound better to me than The Beatles, but I believe the Beatles were better songwriters in general
@@godzuki86 yep. pet sounds is FAR musically superior
I know this might sound crazy, but there is definitely some of a Beach Boys thing going on with Ray Davies with the Kinks on some tracks. There was a time when my only listening pattern was Dylan, the Kinks and Beach Boys stuff. Hearing Brian talk about how Sunflower, Wild Honey and Friends topped his lists of his "most heartfelt" pieces of music, really soothes myself who'd always been emotionally moved by songs that'd gotten dismissed as "too cutesy" to be great. All of them under 3 minutes long. Underdeveloped might apply. But that's looking back. Surely the pressure not to BE THAT CUTE WAY all the time was put on Brian, too. Finally for me.. this interview belies the idea that Landy's approach was ALL BAD, ALL THE TIME for Brian.. in its every aspect. He's clean and coherent. With NO WHIFF of sounding like a guy who can't wait to return to his habits. Smoking a cigarette like a drug user would, one who's way more than halfway back from the indulgences.. those habits that having "more money than one needs" often breeds. So what I'm saying is there's SOMETHING ELSE beyond the point in time of this interview.. some other BAD THINGS occurred to drive Brian down to the depths that came AFTER the laying in bed, eating and not eating.. between binges. Seems maybe Landy actually did UNDO HIS OWN EARLY SUCCESS with Brian just to keep a hold on the rich client that would allow him not to have be a legitimate psychiatrist anymore, and not to have to "punch out" from the advantages it brought. Which makes the subsequent Evil that actually damaged the Brian the most.. being conflated with everything else as ONE BIG BAD WEIRD STORY. Making it all the MORE DESPICABLE as to what happened to Brian. Anyway.. HOW BOUT DEM BOYS.. you know.. as they say in football.
To me, Pacific Ocean Blue is a great album and stands with the best Beach Boys albums of the 70s. Dennis was so articulate in this interview. And, with all of his talent, he was so down to earth.
He seems happy and together.
"Happy Together" 😉
Dennis didn't look like a hippie. It was his unique Surfer look.
rare
Brian Wilson was 34 years old here.
Time is illusory
Just imagine being deaf in one ear and composing all the brilliant songs Brian wrote.
I daydream of watching this with my late Mormon father who loved The Beach Boys. He played their songs on the guitar with passion at family gatherings. Had a perfect pitch voice of an angel. Tought me to play guitar in the 8th grade from an old school fake book. My first songs were “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” and “In My Room”. Passed in the summer between 10th and 11th grade back in ‘94. He would have probably half loved/hated this, but it would have opened some doors to the discussion of not being so brainwashed and judgmental. But I suppose had he not died, I’d still be a brainwashed, overly critical SOB myself…so that’s how the clock ticked and I shouldn’t get all mushy about it over a dumb YT video…
@hyrumnielsen4390 ‘sokay champ. I miss my old man too.
If you go into music stores in Ireland 🇮🇪, you can't much albums on the beachboys accept Pet sounds , Smile or Best of or Greatest hits.
The Beach Boys were my “first love” musically and my initial foray into what has been a lifetime of music. Brian is pure genius. Pet Sounds was one of my eighth grade graduation gifts in June 1966. It took a few listenings before I realized how special the album was. And to this day, I still have the album and will forever treasure it! Long live Brian Wilson!!
Feel for this guy. Some people didn't have the life you think they did
Great interview. The studio "sonics" from Pet Sounds release was state of the art recording during the era. Brian Wilson - pure genius.
still is
This is so good, thank you.
Such a dude.
My dad had to stay in the US for 3 months for a Nato course. We visited him from Belgium for 1 month in April 1982. We stayed in a motel where you could hear and see that yellow roller coaster from Knott's Berry farm. I believe it was called the Ciesta inn. I was 7 and i remember thinking, how cool is this country. Pacman in the little arcade, the toys where crazy. That was 42 years ago but i remember this holiday so vividly. And smile, it's California sounding every few minutes on tv. Flying Eastern and Capitol Airlines. Thank you for this video, brings back memories!
Sweetness about him . Looks like a Picasso painting when he speaks
He seems pretty coherent considering this was meant to be some of the years when he was struggling
This was before Eugene Landy fried his brain on "medicine"
Just remember folks this interview is 47 years old (as I type this) and Brian is still alive and kicking!
I was 6.
He has good genes or eats healthy haha
This guy was the vision the band really needed. Outside the box by miles.
He was hit in the head with a lead pipe as a kid. It severed the eighth nerve in his head. Doctors claimed he was 95-98% deaf. Quote, "I couldn’t hear myself out of the right side, so I started to push the speaking over to the other side of my mouth. It made me look lopsided, like I was coming from the dentist with one side numbed out from novocaine."
I read his father punched him in the ear
Thanks. Was wondering why he was talking out the side of his mouth
Ty for the backstory. I thought it was from his abusive dad hitting him.
Thanks I jumped to the conclusion it was cocaine causing his mouth to do that.
10:50: Debussy combined instruments like that to create new textures and tones
never finish on the Bach
what an incredible interview
The photo at the beginning is Dennis at the POB album signing at Peaches on Sunrise Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale, FL. That's me over Dennis' shoulder on the right, standing in back by the cassette wall. I hopped a city bus after high school to get the signing.
Beautiful fragile soul.
What a sweet humble guy ... Love him .... The whole Eugene Landy story was just awful
read Bri's auto biography, I think Bri is alive today due to Eugene,
@@stevec9102 If you're talking about his first autobiography... that's because Landy himself wrote more of it than Brian did. Landy was a narcissistic crackpot and parasite.
Seems like a lovely guy.
