I use to do this 40 years ago with a a friends dads welding torch. Except with quart sandwich bags, extension cord and steel wool.

If you really want to get rid of the gophers... Put a hose in your exhaust pipe of an engine (your car), make sure it's sealed, stick the other end of hose in the gopher hole that's open, seal with dirt, start engine and let it run for about 30 minutes.Your gophers will be gone for a long time.

A. You used the wrong grade of steel wool. 0000 works best. B. You didn't leave the gas on long enough. The gas is a low flow so it took about 20 seconds just to fill the hose. All in all, it was fun.

I did s similar thing every spring to push the gophers out of my yard. I pushed about 10 feet of half inch hose into the tunnel a nd poured a cup of gasoline down the hose, blowing the last bit out before pulling the hose out. Then I lit a gopher smoker and shoved it into the tunnel. I quickly sealed the tunnel with a couple of shovels of dirt. It takes about 30 Sec. for the gas to explode, blowing back to where the gophers come from.
