Nice concerto but an absolutely awful recording , since when has the piano been placed to the far left of the orchestra.I,m afraid the emphasis is balanced too much towards the soloist , who is excellent by the way . whoever did the mixing for this live recording should have paid a bit more attention to the orchestral balance

The Robert Ward piano Concerto is absolutely Gorgeous! A Romantic Concerto indeed. Why there aren't multiple modern recordings ill never know ! Maybe pianists dont think the piano part is not virtuoso enough? This is one of the most lyrical melodic Piano Concertos out there. Don't you think Rachmaninov would have loved this?! Shame that this languishes in neglect. I would love to see Lang Lang perform this. The Romanticism is right up his alley. Some one record this Please !

A masterpiece. The problem is most take it for a backdrop to a melodramatic Hollywood Movie. What a shame. He borrows a hell of a lot. I wonder how beautiful his "Own" music or compositions might of been. Definitely a frustrated artist who worshiped Rachmaninoff and Liszt. Good for him. Exit stage left by Grand staircase then jump. Applause.

This was the sound of the 1950s. Several selections of piano concertos and rhapsodies from this period are similar - movie and elevator music so to speak.

Thanks to Lee Hobby, it was his work that she took credit for like she did with Robert Joffrey. She stole his company and renamed it Harkness Ballet. She bought everything. This is an over melodramatic rendering of a beautiful work. A hit in Pomona or Boca.

An uplifting experience, to me especially the heroic beginning, reminiscent of Tchaikovsky but more able - daring? - to take that theme further. And she dared even to bring it back in the third movement - kudos! An excellent and very enjoyable piece, a bit similar to that of André Mathieu's as well. Thanks a lot for the upload - it's still one of my favourites after listening to it several times.

Does anyone realize that the opening tone row is almost the same as that in Rach's Symphonic Dances Mov I which comes more than 15 years later?

Thank you so much for posting this! It's sad that such an immense symphony has only one available recording commercially, and that this one is pretty much forgotten and only available on vinyl.
