But in most cases, it is a form of camaraderie, and when people hear it from the outside, then they are like, they are so mean to each other, but it don't mean the same thing. Ms. Schakowsky. Dr. Dyson, would you comment on that? I am willing to acknowledge that maybe in some ways I don't get it but when I hear these words I feel like women are being put down in ways that are really bad. Mr. Dyson. Yes, absolutely. I think that there is no question that the rhetorical contempt that is aimed at women is lamentable, should be talked about, should be confronted and should be articulated without question. What is interesting is that when I said earlier, and I have now a chance to explicate it a bit, is that the virtue, if we can call it that, of hip hop is that you don't really have to guess. If there is lethal viewpoint expressed against women, which we should oppose, which we should talk about, which we should explore, which we should explain, which we should get at the root of---- Ms. Schakowsky. Or justify? I mean---- Mr. Dyson. No, not justify. I mean, you can---- Ms. Schakowsky. I feel like I am---- Mr. Dyson. There is no justification in my mind for it but what is interesting is that we talked about quarantining the crazy, the hip hop. There are ways in which polite society reinforces negative values toward women but they don't call them b * * * *, ho, skeaze or slut, chicken head, 'hood rat. I am not suggesting that b * * * *, ho, skeaze, 'hood rat and chicken head are not offensive.

I love this discussion! David Banner and P ‘Master P’ Miller handled this panel amazingly well. I love the honesty that was shared from these artists. It’s unfortunate, that 12 years later hip hop HAS gotten worse. Fortunately, there are hip hop artists that have elevated and TRYING to change the narrative. As a culture, we must take accountability and say we ALL had a part in keeping our culture stagnant. Yes, music plays a part, BUT there is still a choice that MUST be made within ourselves. A lot of us (including me at one point), made a negative choice based off of the music we listened to. When I listen to old hip hop today, I don’t get those same urges that I got back in the day. Why?!? Because, I made a choice to change. It does help that the artists I listen to have changed as well, and it reflects in their music. Life in general is about evolution. We should not be the same person we were 10mins ago, 10 days ago, or 10 years from now. How do you keep yourself in constant growth mode?? By allowing yourself to FOREVER be a student of life, to experiences, and with the Creator. Something I tell my girls is that, if you can’t find a lesson learned EVERDAY; then your day was NEVER worth living. “Be the change you seek”!!
