It shows just how disturbingly callous and ruthless the aliens were towards humanity. A Tripod, perhaps several, saw this completely unarmed civilian train passing by and blasted it with heat rays until everyone was dead, and then didn't even bother to wreck it, just letting it carry on without a second thought. The people inside who died a horrible death were *nothing* to them.

There is some high quality prime mover in that locomotive...

I feel The Iceman is a disturbing but really good movie, Michael Shannon is an underrated actor. Great portrayal of Richard Kuklinski. He made killing people a business as usual practice. Showed no remorse. This is a beautiful but haunting song.

To think about the power of tripod beam, this scene actually doesn't make sense the beam surely derailed the train when it struck but nonetheless, this scene was the most impressive scene out of entire movie to me as well and looks like many people in the comment feels the same way

The engineers and conductors on the train had decided that it was best to probably try to outrun a band of Martian attackers... That's when a few of them just stood by the railroad tracks and opened fire on the train as it passed, killing everyone aboard... That left the engines stuck in full power... Either the fire will get to the control systems or the fuel tanks and stop it via damage or explosion... Otherwise, the burning runaway will continue at high speed intil it reaches a sharp turn or curve and derail...

Symbolic scene. This movie tries to remind you at EVERY moment (even when it seems calm) that Tripods are everywhere and everywhere it is not safe. You won't feel confident even once! The feeling of danger follows us all the time. I love it in this movie!
