Learning to flat water paddle up on to the foil. VLOG #49. Flight school is open.
14 weeks into this and I have flight and some glide at last. I have had some ups and downs with trying to figure out what to do next with technique and balance but it's happening. Im Up! Now it's trying to sustain the speed into the pumps.
Fitness has now peaked and its fine tuning the technique as well as keeping the weight loss going.
At the start I really did think it was going to be impossible but now Im sure it's possible.

Learning to Wing-foil. Very light onshore/cross-on shore wind, offshore recovery technique. VLOG#49
zhlédnutí 1,6KPřed 21 dnem
Winging when the wind drops becomes very challenging when the wind really doesn't support the wing enough to aid your balance. Recovering with the wind behind is particularly hard as there is even less stability in the board with the wing directly in front of you. This is an easy technique that gets you back to the beach whilst not being overly strenuous and also makes you very visible from the...

    Ok. So it’s 7mph to engage your foil? All things considered. 🥂 doing great mate. Inspiration to us all 🎉 appears NEEDED speed to sustain engagement of the foil is noticeably higher 11km/hr 😢 (vs winging its 8 or 9km/hr)

    • @heliboy999fly
      @heliboy999fly Před 7 dny

      @@wingfoilrentals I think the foil is actually able to lift me at 4.5 mph but it’s at max AOA so it will either stall or cause huge drag. Going faster seems to give a really nice stable flow/ride which allows me to keep my balance and start to transition to pumping. Last month I was just doing huge power strikes with really aggressive pumps and I was getting onto the foil at 4.5-5.0 mph but stalling and falling most times. Since I’m now going for speed and micro pumps I’m much more stable and therefore able to go faster. Got up yesterday and did 6 pumps which felt epic. Winging takes a lot of weight off the foil so the formula means less lift needed for a given power and therefore less speed needed to gain required lift for a lighter weight. Think about when you are on a small foil and wing and the wind drops. You need monster pumping arms to get flying. This is similar.

I’ve found the paddle length, foot position and foil position to get this every time. Moving the foil forward just makes it stall and kicks me off. Hi Lee, thanx for the inspiration. I got the same setup. I managed to get up yesterday. My two cents: lose the sirus and get the curve 5xl. Put it all the the way in the front and stand way back on the cruzader. Front foot behind foot strap inserts. The Gong paddle with 9 blade helped me alot. I have 100kg and it took me about 15 sessions. Keep going. You are almost there. Cheers from lake konstanz

    Inspiring journey. I am in my second week. 56 yo, 6 feet, 70 kg, reasonably fit (run, swim, cycling, gym), but flat water paddle up demands so much output power (besides precise technique) that it is a very humbling experience. Keep up!

    im quite surprised that you are using a hs and a old mast armstrong on gong board without any top plate shim , when i had a lemon i had to put a 2 degree front and 3d print a stab shim to get front foot too ( contrary of what they armstrong give) to make it work and had a little bit of front foot and yet it wasnt perfect but it was noticeable on the hs1850 ! ps : i checked your other video and you have backfoot for sure, it's ok in wave but for speed manoeuver foot change and so on it's really bad. from what i heard the performance mast , coupled to new stab are now front foot and for some people so much front foot they have to put their foil all the way back. Armstong went from backfoot to front foot in the last gen of gear, front foot gear make it so much easier for the foiler !

    • @heliboy999fly
      @heliboy999fly Před 2 měsíci

      I hear what you are saying and I wish I could get it further forward to give me more front foot pressure but it’s what I have and I can’t change it. I ride without straps so I tend to get going then shuffle back to put the centre of life further forward and give me some front foot pressure. I have adapted shins to give additional down force on the tails for when I Windfoil but they do slow me down on a wing. I was originally fully gong foils but changed to Armstrong foils but kept my gong boards.

      @youdigsurf Před 2 měsíci

      @@heliboy999fly exactly the same than me, i decided to go to fone for their simplicity but it's still wasnt good with the gong board... i liked the Armstrong but those issues totaly killed it, i brought it new so i decided i spent enough cash on it and cut my loss. Solution from cheap to less cheap, 3d print a top plate shim, get a new gen stab, get the alu mast which is raked like the performance mast.

    Completely agree with everything in this video. I weigh 108 kg so dealing with a lot of the same issues. My original downline board was 8‘3“ I just had a custom-made at 7‘8“ kept the same volume at 130 l. I widen the board by little over an inch for a little more stability. The new board is more stable with no noticeable reduction in hull speed. A few inches should not matter, but it feels more shortboardy. Also it’s set up for a foil drive.

      I use my foil assist on mine too. Full power and pumping needed to get up on my 5’2” Lethal but I can get up onto foil with zero pumping with only 60% power on the DW board. Shows the efficiency
