American Teachers in Chengdu PROMO
Located in central Sichuan Province, Chengdu is home to over 20 million people. Included in that number are two American teachers who have made the capital of Sichuan Province their home. Through their weeklong journey they explore some of the city's amazing sites and share their feelings about living in one of China’s most diverse and economically important cities in Southwest China.
Both teachers, Michael from Nebraska and Wesley from Connecticut, discuss similar experiences about living in China and America. From shopping at a local farmer’s market, to exploring the city on a full moon bike ride and playing on a softball team, there are many commonalities between their lives in Chengdu and their lives in America.
And there are many differences as the teachers become students traveling to Chengdu’s historical and modern sites including the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding outside of the city center. As the only research facility in the world located in an urban area, the park is a rare opportunity for people to view pandas and understand efforts to conserve wildlife.
At each historical site they visited they learned more about the history of Chengdu. At the Wuhou Temple in Southern Chengdu they viewed ancient stone scrolls dating back to 808 AD. They saw traditional and modern architecture at the Huanglongxi Ancient Town. And a stunning prefab building with a figure eight rooftop juxtaposed to the Daoming Bamboo Craft Village where they learned basket weaving. At the Wide and Narrow Alleys, they watched classical ear cleaning. And the insights they share about viewing artifacts at the archeological site of Sanxingdui dating back to 12th to 11th Century BC are interwoven with historical facts that provide a history lesson for the viewing audience. Tasty treats at an old teahouse that featured a traditional face changing performance and a traditional hot pot meal round out their weeklong adventure.
The journey of American teachers in Chengdu provides a glimpse into what it’s like living and teaching English in the busy city. More importantly are the connections they’ve made and the teachable moments they share as part of a global community.

The traditional way of tailoring allows the garments to flow over, and move with, the body of the wearer. The result is usually super comfortable clothes that may not look super polished and structured, and the tailors would use brocades, piping in contracting colours, colourful embroidery, and decorative buttons to enhance the overall appearance. Over the years the focus shifted from comfort to style, and we are seeing more and more form fitting (and often restrictive) designs that are meant to be worn on display but not lived in, which makes me uncomfortable as I remember how women had suffered enough already from corsets back in history. I don’t think we need to put ourselves into straight jackets just to meet others’ expectations of being demure and meek creatures, I believe that we should be able to wear clothes that not only look good but also feel comfortable at the same time. Thankfully, there are ways to mitigate this unfortunate trend, and it’s to go for a sleeveless design that has slightly larger arm holes, and to choose the traditional style of opening at the front with frog buttons instead of zippers at the back. With these small details, you will feel much more comfortable wearing a QiPao (Mandarin for Manchurian robe) or Cheongsam (Shanghainese for long dress, which is the same thing) and may actually enjoy it much more often :)

During the Chinese cultural revolution Mao wanted to do away with the four olds of custom, culture, habits and ideas. His fanatical red guards did much destruction of China’s heritage. The idea was to have communist ideology replace the four I wonder how Master Huang Yunpeng fared during this period as an artist belonging to one of the olds. If it were not for the government and the PLA would Jindezhen have been destroyed by the fanatics? It is so interesting how the olds survived that chaotic period-a period that visitors to China are advised to never mention to the natives.

Thanks to my grandmother, I knew the name of my ancestral village, the county and the province, ever since I was a young boy. It was drilled into me when I was growing up in the 60s, presumably so I would not forget my roots. My grandmother was not literate, as most girls were not educated in pre-war China. But she had a sharp memory (and an equally sharp tongue). While she was still lucid, during her 80s, I sat down with her one day and asked about the family history. I wrote down everything she told me, and I was glad I did this. Grandmother passed away in 2003. In the same year, I made a sightseeing trip to Hong Kong. On a whim, I decided to catch the ferry to Zhongshan in Guangdong, with the vague intention of finding my ancestral village. As this was in the early days of the internet, I had very little to go by - no maps, no phone numbers, no addresses - just the name of the village that was firmly etched in my head. By simply asking around, I managed to find my way to the village and found the ancestral home. Bingo! I stayed only for a day and shared a meal with distant relatives while I was there. It wasn't long, but it filled a longstanding void. For those contemplating doing the same, it should be a lot easier these days. There are now far more resources available to help make the connection possible.

I agree. The attempt at artful posing and their chatter, which sounds, for the most part, like a second rate tourist brochure, is annoying. The gardens are beautiful; the best way to showcase them is with good photography and minimal narration. This video feels more like a couple's video of their vacation. Sad. So much beauty wasted on a commercial. The shots on the boat, especially when the man wiped away tears, were ludicrous. Turning off sound did help, so it was not a complete waste of time.

General Stillwell was a man of several contradictions. He was a registered Republican, therefore automatically an anti-communist. Yet he analysed that a temporary truce with Mao Zedong could prove productive against the Japanese. He was considered a racist even by standards of the time. Yet he thought of the Chinese soldier to be the equivalent of his British and American counterparts and therefore setup a training school for the Chinese in Ramgarh. He was a General officer, yet he would go as low as leading battalion sized positions into battle, forcing his rivals to tag him as a "3 star batallion and regiment commander of WW2". His legacy was sumwat tarnished due to the hysteria of the Cold War after the fall of China to communists. But his strategies like the opening of the Ledo Road and relief operations in Northern Burma were commended even by a General of the stature of William Slim.
