Great video Thank you i will need to add a gauges and regulator on mine, i got a 1600 and i have a pump install this is the way i purchased it and run great and start great the issue I'm investigating now is when i take a good ride and stop the engine when is hot and try to restart really hard to start. I'm curious if its fuel issue because of the pump i will need to check my carb if it flooding.
Sounds like the old “hard start” issue where it is flooding. If you push the gas pedal down (when it’s hot) it should start easier but that doesn’t fix the underlying problem, and the oil starts to smell like gas. There’s a good chance that your current pump is pushing too much fuel. Best of luck and I hope the gauge and regulator fix it for you.
Nvm, I looked at your older videos and saw the CSP linkage indtall
So far the CSP linkage is still working like champ. I’m gonna try to stay with that “bellcrank” or “push/pull” linkage if I can ever get some Weber 40’s. Dub daily!
Greetings sir. What linkage are you using, if I may ask?
Aqui no brasilia não encontrei explicação sobre o uso dessa ferramenta, ganhou mais um inscrito.
onky the best - hahaha in europe standard is 95 octane, best 98. cheers!
Our fuel prices here are still high too. Cheers across the pond!
Tighten up your belt bro, it’s way too loose!
@@brianzimmer5532 it definitely was. She good now. 👍🏼
Funny that my '86 Brazilian bug came stock with an almost identical linkage. Factory dual alcohol carbs.
I didn’t know that. Good thing for you though. I still think it’s a great set up, compared to previous ones I’ve used anyway
@@bomberobus Absolutely, I love it. If I want to put Webers on it, I'd have to buy something like this so the length and height are correct. Happy to know this product exists!
Why s there so much grease on the coupler? That why the rubber end pieces deteriorated. Leave 'em dry.
@@sidvis7235 Hmmmm, I will try that on the next one I do. That was the original one decades old. I hear that the new polyurethane ones don’t last long. Mines still shifting like new, but I’ll leave it dry next time so I can compare.
@@bomberobus Just a light film on the pin is fine, but's that's all I would lubricate. Gease and oil do not mix well with rubber. Neoprene isdifferent, it will withstand petroleum products. That's why fuel lines are not rubber, but neoprene.
Great video! Thank you
@@user-ju2wk1tn9f I appreciate that.
El Tunco El Salvador! Hahah I live here in ES, great that you've got a souvenir.
Souvenir is cool, but even better are the memories! Great hospitality and waves. I’ll never forget ES 😎
great video brother! going thru this now so this helps a ton!!!
Thank you and best of luck 🤙🏼
Look really good, great work, I'm looking to do mine and i got 165/65R15 and I'm curious if it will rub.
The ones on this Bug rubbed ever so slightly on bumps. Not gonna lie…very light massaging was done at the fender well. Very light.
@@bomberobus Thanks
The stumble on the EPCs was probably due to the setting on the accelerator pump linkage. There's are 2 holes for the linkage, the outside hole is for a small squirt (stock 1600 or smaller) and you have to move the linkage to the inside hole which is 'big squirt' for engines bigger than 1600...
I’m doing the same in my ‘64, I got it redone but will slowly do the interior. I need seatbelts too but want them front and back. I opted for 3 point, non retractable in front and lap belts in back. How do you attach the shoulder harness, what are you attaching it to? Also, do you have a rear seatbelt video?
Good clean interior is the icing on the cake…I’m not there yet. My shoulder harness bolted into the window B-post. On mine it had a threaded hole there, and I had to order a bolt. Ours are only one year apart so maybe you have that same hole?
I followed this step by step. My car wouldn’t go into 3rd because the coupler was so loose. Not anymore. Thanks
Glad it helped. Way more enjoyable to drive when they’re shifting smooth.
Yes, that’s the Scat drag shifter. I still have it but a couple years ago I installed the BUS Scat drag shifter version in my ‘74 RatRod beetle and love it! Nothings cooler than having a tall shifter in a tiny car! Now, in case you’re wondering, I did have to put several washers under the shifter itself where the 2 bolts to raise it a smidge because the ball is a little lower(longer) than the standard beetle size. In case you’re wondering if it can be done, yes it can😎
Thanks for the tips! I got this shifter sort of on accidental good luck. If I buy one I WANT THE TALL ONE so I’m glad to know it can be done. I agree that tall shift gives a lot of style points…just something cool about it🤷🏻♂️ especially I’m a Rat! Thanks again and dub daily.
I know this video is a little old but maybe youll respond, ive got an 1800cc im building right now with the same dual 34icts. I was wondering what size jets youre running?
55 idle, 150 main, 175 air correction works perfect on my 1800 here in southern US. Don’t know the deep physics of it, but when I read my plugs they tell that combo is the best so far, and it just runs great. Best of luck with your 1800…they rip when you want to.
@@bomberobus Awesome! Thanks for responding, I'll try this combo to start with.
@maxburmeister7689 no problem hope it helps. I made a few vids on those carbs/tuning/troubleshooting etc. I have the bug to build another engine (pun intended) but it’s not in my favor right now. I’m excited for you and your 1800🤙🏼
The 72 bus I just purchased came with a homemade version of this. It is a bit shorter than that one. I might give it a try if I need to tow to the body shop
Congrats on getting the Bus! Yeah I’ve seen a lot of homemade ones that worked for short pulls. I went ahead and got this one for long hauls. Enjoy the 72 🤙🏼
Great video. I have a 79 with FI. Not running carbs. Any idea what that fuel pressure should be? Thanks
I keep mine strictly regulated with a quality fuel pressure regulator. It runs best around 2.5 psi at 3k rpm. Any less and it gets starved, any more and it floods after shut down. I wouldn’t mind a good FI setup because these carbs can be finicky.
I noticed you didnt have an SVDA distributor. Would you suggest one?
Sure, my brother runs one and it works great. In my opinion, they’re great for smaller 1600 and less engines that need the extra advance on take off. Once you go bigger than 1600 and do things like stroker and bigger valves etc, you’re revving past the 009 flat spot pretty quickly. Proper jet combo and it’s unnoticeable.

My dog doesn't like cars. Is first ride he was taken from family. Is second trip he was stuck a few times. His third took his junk away. Now he just barks at cars. Lol
LOL that’s fair if you think about it from his perspective! Have a great Memorial Day weekend.
I run the Pertronix distributer, coil and wires. Best system I have used so far. I run it on both 1979 VW bus and 1975 Porsch 914. I have tried other systems but this combination works best for me. The coil has to be matched to the distributer igniter to work right. The ohms have to be compatible. The plug wires have to be compatible also. Good video .
Thanks. It has been great since I got it ironed out. It’s in the Bus now, but I’d like to get the same set up for the Bug soon. I bet your 914 is fun to drive!
What are the sizes of the front/rear tires & wheels?
I'm running some AA 501 heads. Nice castings. I just lapped the valves and matched the intake and exhaust ports. So far, so good.
I wished I had done that match porting too. I’m not complaining because it’s still going well. At least this way I’ve become very familiar with how it goes without the porting, so if I do match the intake and exhaust in the future I’ll be able to honestly tell how much of a difference it made. Best of luck with yours. Also, if that’s your Bug in the ID pic, I love that blue 🤙🏼
@@bomberobus honestly, unless your running a really nasty cam on a big stroker the stock ports are fine . Yeah that's my bug. The guy I bought it from painted it with blue house exterior paint. Looks like shit in person. Been stripping the blue off one panel at a time. Original color was tan. I have a short clip of it cruising ocean Blvd. On my channel. I like your channel, keep posting.
whats the name of the re grease? and brand?
Great video! Thank you for sharing
Thank you for watching 🤙🏼
even if you could machine those block openings.....It was 10mm stud so I would NOT.....1800 was the right thing to do with that case.
Very true. It seems I never stop learning about the cause and effects of those engines. It helped me a lot watching your vids so thanks.
Where did you buy that from, very nice looking bus.
Thanks Mike! Search for J rock on the Samba. He makes and sells them there.
Great Job, well done! I learned a lot on the way.🔧
Thanks!
the 1800 you need to do more clearancing. on a 1904 because the opening is larger you may not need to do much at all. just a tiny bit.
Thanks for that info. I did wonder if any clearancing at all would need to be done on a bigger engine, because it was so close on this one.
@@bomberobus its a tiny amount on a 90.5. almost nothing. I think we did it just in case. I dont think it was actually necessary. such a small amount. the 74 is an easy upgrade. My buddy did the 76 and he said he put it in a few cases he had and it fit right in too. just about the same amount as the 74. But some guys say you need to do full clearancing.
I try and use Klob rod bearings. and clean off the grey stuff with a little scotchbrite. I have used silverline and they do work. Sometimes they are out of klob. so I use silverline. just make sure to clean them with scotchbrite or they might be tight.
Hi can you show, how your solution for the SVDA distributor? Do you connected the vacuum hose to both carbs? If so, how?
Hey Bro great video 😊 You helped me get my carburetors ready, I subscribe
Glad it helped! Thanks for the sub 🤙🏼
What exhaust manifolds you running, also what heads and valves you got on that set up? I have a stock 1500 i want to spruce up and i'd like to set it up with dual 40's like you
My bad for the late response. Those are the 500 series heads from AA. I made a video comparing those heads to stock ones that you can find in the channel. Basically, that whole engine build is in there. I also have several vids of an 1800cc I built which you might be interested in. It takes no machine work and is definitely worth the extra power. The 1800 that I built in this channel is still running like a top. Best of luck whatever you choose!
Loved the video the 65 is awesome ❤
Thanks buddy!
Can you explain how you wired your tachometer with the Pertronix? I'm using their flamethrower 3 SVDA and I heard (or misheard) that it won't work. I don't currently have a tachometer to try but I'm wanting to install one. Obviously yours works so I'm hoping I just heard wrong or didn't understand at the time. Thanks I wanted to mention I've been running this distributor for about 3 years with zero issues. I drive it daily but only a couple of longer trips.
Yea sir on mine it does work. The instructions even say it will….”tach wire will hook to the same location as stock.” That’s is on the coil. Congrats on three years trouble free. It seems on rare occasions there are duds, but for the most part, when installed correctly these things run great.
@@bomberobus thanks, I'll be looking for a tachometer now.
Cool, maybe let me know how it goes because I had heard similar things as you did on how it wouldn’t work. Something about the variable spark, but I don’t know🤷🏻♂️
@bomberobus I'm thinking the reason I thought it wouldn't work was due to not being able to static time the Pertronix ignition. The negative terminal on the coil shows constant voltage, I'm guessing it pulses once the engine is running? I'll post the results once I install the tach. I have a 2110cc in my bug and the gears are definitely lower than stock, especially 3rd and 4th. The previous owner put the transaxle in but I don't know any details. It revs pretty high on the highway so I've wanted the tachometer to actually know.
Looking forward to the outcome. Sounds like that Bug can scoot. I firmly believe that the extra power is needed when trying to drive amongst modern traffic!
Dude i pulled that flywheel off 4 times to get the leak finally sorted out.
I can relate. I don’t even do it anymore unless the leak gets outrageous. I know you dub daily, and your Bug is looking good!
@@bomberobus that and the canyons out here make for some calm days. 😎
re : the bent shsft. It must be normal; I' ve seen it in other videos.
Thanks for the info. That was the first time I’d seen one so it looked weird. Apparently that’s normal 🤷🏻♂️
I am new to the vw thing. Does yours have a seal on the front ? I see you have a breather filter instead of a hose leading to the carbs
Welcome to VW’s. Pleasure and pain combined for sure. Yes I have a seal. Those hoses go to a breather box that I have mounted on the firewall, basically I’m venting crank case pressure mostly from where the mechanical fuel pump would be.
@@bomberobus OK thank you so much for the info
Awesome! Did the same thing and love the performance! Just so everyone knows, my mechanical, original, fuel pumps diaphragm failed and gas leaked all in my crankcase/oil. What a mess that was! After much research I learned the Carter 2.5-5lbs fuel pump was the best way to go. They’re on Amazon and still relatively inexpensive($35-40). Well worth it for the peace of mind. Definitely want to install a kill switch with it. You never know! Takes a little time but, again, well worth the efforts.
Yep. I do appreciate the genius utilitarian aspect of the mechanical fuel pump, but over all, electric fuel pumps have won me over. You know the rule though….gotta get a spare to keep around LOL!
Going from a stock 1600 to these 88 thick wall, do pushrods require being changed? I always adjusted my valves at .006 and after shop did head work to accomodate these thick wall 88s he said i had to adjustvat .004. Compression he said was now 8.75-1.
I was able to use my stock PR’s, even with a 74mm stoked cranked, and minimal shimming of the rocker stands, but and stock ratio rockers. .004 valve adjustment seems good for your scenario…but I’m not that builder. You must be excited about your engine! I hope you enjoy the extra push!
@bomberobus sadly have worked on this car more than driven. Trying workout issues in order to do a 200 mile cross island cruise. Oil leaks from oil pump and behind crank pulley got me pulling my hair out now but this is what we sign up for. Thanks for info on pr. I think best to stay with his recommendations and will always wonder should I be at .006
I'm getting ready to do this on my 63 and 68 Beetles. Thanks for making the video!
I hope it helps. I feel like this is one of the most underrated upgrades to the vdub experience. Problematic windows and doors are too often overlooked, and if you drive ‘em it’s just a hassle. Dub daily my friend!
@bomberobus I had several different beetles when I was younger. Now that I'm older I think I'm having more fun with them. The 68 I am fixing up for my granddaughters first car, she doesn't know it yet so I'm excited to get it ready. My 63 is a ragtop but unfortunately the previous owner turned it into a Baja which isn't my favorite but oh well. The 68 has the stock single port which will be perfect for a new driver learning. The 63 has a 2110cc, dual IDFs, balanced crank, etc and is such a fun car! I watch a lot of CZcams videos including yours, extremely helpful so thanks again.
@goldentrunnell7450 haha yea for me I have a bit more patience with age so I can laugh off the troubles that come with old VW’s and have more fun. Your granddaughter is gonna be one of the very few younger people today that will experience an old Bug…she’ll never forget it! I taught my daughter to drive a stick shift in ours. When she comes home to visit (military) she always says “Dad can we go V-dubbin?” Precious times man, good luck with things!
Bombero you on the job bro great vid
Thanks 🤙🏼
Cool deal; got one in my car. I believe these studs are to be torqued at 14 ft/lbs but 16 is fine.
Thanks, I must admit that after using it for awhile, I’ve fallen in love with this pump.
Aloha from Iceland brutha
From Iceland? That’s gotta be one cool story there. Aloha
hell yeah. i luckily bought all the speciality tools used in this video when i got my baja last year, and now that i have had to completely rebuild it, your video made setting the endplay super easy. i somehow lost all my smaller width shims, but i made it work with two that got me to .03. thanks!
Right on. I love the Bajas. 3-5thou is the goal so im glad you got there. Congrats on the rebuild too…have fun!
Did you happen to try on the 34s a taller intake by chance..
That’s a negative. He was dead set in the 40’s no matter what so we just embraced the 40 adventure LOL
Good information for sure thanks.
Thanks man. Trouble free shifting sure does make the ride more fun.
How are the 40's running ? Do you still like them ?
Just fired them up after sitting for awhile. Jet was clogged up but they ran well after clearing it up. Still weeping at galley plugs though.
@@bomberobus Thanks for the update.
