Gene Clark performing 'Release me, girl' at the Capitol Theatre, Passaic, NJ Date : 04-03-1978 Roger Mcguinn and Gene Clark started touring as a duo in late 1977. This is their show at the Capitol Theatre in March, 1978. First Clark played two songs (one of them featured in this video), then Mcguinn played two songs and then the pair finished off the evening together. This small scale tour prov...

Mcguinn Clark & Hillman doing don't you write her off for a dutch TV show. They also performed backstage pass on this show (which I also posted) which seems to reveal tension between Mcguinn and Clark. In this video Mcguinn barely looks at Clark who shows mcguinn his middle finger in the beginning ... wonder what was going on between the two of them back then. Gene's drinking and consequent unp...

Gene Clark forever!💖
Gene Clark forever!💖
jammer van die stroomstoring halverwege
It's a really good song, even with the sappy disco beat and the cheesy strings. This song, and the entire album, sounded infinitely better live.
I remember seeing this on TV when it happened. Thank you Roger McGuinn and Bud Freeman, two live performance talents.
Gene's voice was a thing of beauty.
Would love to know what happened between Gene and Roger at the beginning of the song.
That eye-roll by Gene at Roger at 1.17, and Roger with his back turned to Gene during the whole song (Is Roger even playing?) This is even better than Gene flipping Roger the bird - uh, byrd - at the beginning of "Don't You Write Her Off Like That".
KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK poha roger
Yeah. Unfortunately, the elevator background music, lip synching give this a cheesy soft soft rock quality unbecoming to the collective talents of these three greats. A bit cringe worthy.
Forgive us our Disco
Hey O, Mcguinn is mad bc Gene did his share of cocaine and can still sing better than him
very nice, you published it. I saw it live on TV. Those were the days..... Greetings from Holland.
Hilarious when Gene sings "and there's a star" he looks at mcguinn and rolls his eyes hahaha
Hahaha. I think roger was in a very bad mood that time. Not even playing his guitar, not singing, not in d mood really back turned
Guess jimbob Roger didnt like gene taking the spot light. Gene sounds great. Hey yo
Band had potential, but it was all ruined by a slick, dancing/disco beat to the album. Could have been so much more.
The song is solidly commercial but the disco trimmings are a desperate attempt to get a hit in the late 70s that the song can do without....
Awsome
Holy shit never heard that one before live or not 🎸😎
Isn't this the studio recording?
Immense.
some major tension between Gene & Roger here...I guess McGuinn figured Gene was blowing this tour with alcohol
he probably was - Roger was cleaned up by this time
Nah Roger is jealous bc Gene is in the spotlight again. "Jim" had his issues w drugs and alcohol too. Gene doesnt appear or sound intoxicated
Gene Clark was a monster when he got drunk. It eventually would kill him. McGuinn saw the signs.
+Terence Boris As Gene Clark saw some bad signs in McGuinn... Gene Clark was just the best Byrd and McGuinn with his big ego knew it.
true, but by this time, after all these guys had been through, I'm sure it was mostly about their amazing chemistry and legacy. Roger is the consummate professional/performer. Gene was more of a poet/songwriter. Gene obviously struggled with the spotlight, unfortunately,
Come back to us, Gene. We never had enough of you.
Love this performance, and i like the disco elements of the album, its something a bit different.... even if Roger is pissed off with Gene, they still both look fucking cool. And NOOTHERGYPSYRIDER, i dont think Gene misses a cue at all, clearly Roger is doing it as part of the show, possibly a little upmanship but nothing else.
so handsomeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee gene was r.i.p and still is in kingdom of heaven

que grosos son !!!!!!!!!!!
Saw him in '78 with McGuinn, Clark, Hillman (&Crosby) in San Francisco. Gene blew me away. Thanks so much for posting this.
Love it Would love to see more of this show. What a creative force this guy was
Ty gerard for bringing it. Would love someday to down the whole gig. So fab. :-)
This is wonderful! Such great quality of video and audio! I don't know where you keep finding these treasures, gerardusch, but please keep finding them! :-)
I listened to Gene Clark play this song live in 1978 in Wellington,New Zealand backed by the rest of the group consisting of Roger McGuinn guitar, Chris Hillman bass and George Grantham ex Poco on drums and they blew the roof off that old Opera House that night. Gene with his huge powerful, warm, rich voice was just magnificent such a great singer Roger McGuinn also played an electric guitar solo which was hauntingly apt and beautiful as part of the performance of Release me Girl. All these guys together put on one of the best shows I ve ever had the pleasure and privilege to enjoy, truly memorable
This is how it's done.Simple and to the point. The word 'incredible' is not enough...
at119 he is surely thinking of Roger more humour than anyone in music hey ho
sends shivers
Gerard: definitief: Johnne Sambatoro and Gregg Thomas.
Hi Gerard Thank you very much for uploading. Gene is in supervoice. The additional musicians must be John Sambator guitar and Greg Thoma drums they toured with MCH. Wish there was more on Gene, if you like The MCH combination there is something to explore on the net. Do'nt know if its alright to revile but if you are interested catch me by mail. Thanks again
Wow look at coked up McGuinn..hating his way better rival..Clark.. Jeez!
Roger is completely straight by this time. Clark? probably headed down the destructive path again...sad.
@@ronfowlermusic give me a break. Roger lied/lies about his drug use. He is a darling of pat robertsons 700 club. Said the only drug he did was pot
No, Roger said he had been doing cocaine, too. He was in bad shape before he got sober.
@@ronfowlermusic yep he (jimbob) was on a strange sobriety to ever judge anyone else's drug use
@@lastnamefirst4035 And a Repub to boot!
Crosby is generally described as the queen bitch/superego of the group. He gave Gene Clark a very bad time, undermining him as a guitarist & managed to virtually destroy a Byrds producer's career by making his name mud in the music environment.
He was a bitch to a lot of people, specially to Gene. he fired Crosby and discharged Michael. In the beginning of the Byrds career he choose songs where he was involved in rather than do the golden melodies of Gene (She do'nt care about time). Eight miles high was a Gene song with a little help from Crosby and MCGuinn. A great artist but also a very big ego and manupilative.
Fantastic.Saw Gene and his band in London 1977 plus Roger and Chris with their bands.
Me too!!
i enjoy this and seeing Gene so lively, but the disco-fied backing is aweful. Still enjoy the song and performance. Thanks.
Roger and Gene together is one of the most pleasant moments to listen at. What a waste, Gene is no longer with us. With love from Holland.
yeah, you look at this stuff and you just go roger who? Gene was such a babe!
@wildbilco55 so, what did he say?
God, another great album from my college days....
Happy Birthday Chris Hillman !
Roger Mc Guinn honey!
This would have done as the promo clip here in Oz.
