Saying that Elm does not have null is IMHO not correct. It has null - it is called "Nothing" and is encapsulated in Maybe. Practically, what Maybe achieves is that it marks a value to be nullable - similar to PHP's ? (e.g. ?int, ?MyObject). Combine that with a compiler that does type checking, and all is well. But null still exists. And it is required. Without the concept of null, you don't have the concept of Maybe. Null itself is not a billion dollar mistake. Not being able to choose (as the programmer) where null is allowed and where not, THAT is the mistake!

If you can't write a decoupled/modular monolith, I don't think you could write better software as microservices. I mean basically if you don't know DDD, Clean Architecture, KISS, proper DRY and vertical slicing... you shouldn't be jumping on to learn microservices first.
