TWA Flight 529 crash, 8mm video taken by Milton Zavertnik, September 1, 1961
This 8 mm video was taken the morning after the crash of TWA Flight 529 by Milton Zavertnik, Chief John Heidenreich’s cousin. John took him over to the site so he could document it on film. There is a very good shot of the tail that fell off before the crash. Video courtesy of Roger Heidenreich. Taken 9/1/1961.

i grew up in he greater skokie area, listening to stories of the west side. my mother mentioned the Jewish Peoples Institute often. Now my generation has left Skokie to raise families in Arlington Hts, Buffalo Grove and beyond. Wandering Jews.

Oh cool, the film explains the role of Bohemians earlier in Lawndale. My great-great-grandparents' flat still stands on 21st Place. The Czechs came in from Pilsen, built out the base housing stock, and continued moving west out to Berwyn and Riverside. Jews moved in, built the monumental synagogues and schools on Douglas Boulevard -- it must have been amazing in the 1940s. We each lived here for 3 decades or so, before the neighborhood went all to hell. It's a terrible shame what we have lost. Look at all the old synagogues on Grand Boulevard and Drexel, too. Rainbow/PUSH is based in one, you notice the Hebrew date on the cornerstone as you enter.

My father and my grandparents used to live in the southwest side of the city. My father attended Farragut high school and then my family eventually moved to West Roger’s Park.

Though not violent, the transition of Lawndale from mostly Jewish to mostly Black was still tainted by blockbusting and racially charged tactics. Found a very helpful article that speaks more to that aspect: www.chicagomag.com/city-life/April-2015/How-White-Housing-Riots-Shaped-Chicago/

The approach into Sucre is somewhat unsettling, especially if you're on the north side of the plane. Were you given the gears over swine flu when you landed? When we landed in mid-July all the gringos were redirected to a health check. Always enjoy seeing my home city - thanks for posting!
