I just noticed. This shuttle deploys its landing gear.But It is a space station to moon shuttle. It has no reason to retract its landing gear or even have the ability. It will never feel an atmosphere. Too bad 3001 hasn't been made.

In terms of speculating about technology, this part is where the movie was at its weakest. Way too elaborate machinery, and no attempt to simulate 1/6 gravity.

At the time the movie was released, we didn't have an air conditioner or a freezer.

Jaw dropped in 1967. It is still agape.

Can you imagine hearing The Blue Danube LIVE at the 1867 Paris World's Fair ? It would have been a life altering experience.

2001 is really a slow movie with lots of dead time. 1/2 that landing could have been cut and no one would have noticed. My one issue with 2001.

Graceful, beautiful ... but my life of engineering ruins it now as I watch it go hey that's bad design it would work better if ... LOL.

The only space movie I know of without roaring rockets. There is no sound in space.

The hardware designers of that movie were decades ahead of their time. E.g. look at the cockpits in Alien 1, Nostromo, it contains thousands of switches. Look at spaceship design now in 2024, hardly any switches to be found, if any.

Here it is 2024 and no country has built any kind of moon base. What's up with that?

Kubrick was a genius. Getting Arthur C Clark to write a book to be made into a movie and then get Jesse Kaye to oversee the soundtrack.

This film still looks fresh today

Every time I hear the Blue Danube I replay the shuttle rendezvous in my mind, A perfect mix.

The view the Aries pilots has always bothered me: When landing they, the pilots are on their back, basically looking straight up at the sky, yet, when they are nearing the base, you can see the moon's surface out the window. The passengers should have that view - not the pilots.

Have watched this many times over the past 40 years, but just noticed a continuity error for the first time. In all the shots where you can see the Earth it is at a waxing gibbous phase, *except* for the one where there are three astronauts on the lunar surface outside Clavius base. In that one, the Earth is showing a *waning* gibbous phase.

I wonder when all the pods will start arriving???? Hmmm

Stanley spun this to the money makers as a "space race" movie, all the while knowing he wanted to show his kind of film. Look out for country flags on some of the satellites near the start!

そもそも、着陸時にコクピットが天頂を向いてるのが、設計上のミス ま、映画は絵的な格好良さを優先した演出なんだろうけど

やはりミニチュア(といってもデカいけど)アナログ特撮の実在感はいいですね

I noticed that the pilots could see their approach to Clavius -- they must have rotated the Aries lander so that their windows were oriented horizontally toward the base. But when they are landing, the lander's orientation is vertical again. Interesting how Kubrick didn't thoroughly work out this procedure on film, as thorough as the finished product already is.
