what is the range?
@t.texastimmy1022 It depends on the terrain. We were getting 1-2miles.
@@W6IWN_Radio I notice that there's a slightly more powerful model / the M8. I assume that compatible but w/ better range?
@t.texastimmy1022 The maximum power out for FRS is 2Watts. They look pretty much the same. I haven't tried an M8, though.
With the g90 tuner you can ditch the 9:1
That was pretty cool.
I made one using a PVC pipe after your first video on it. I made a qso to a POTA in WI from So Cal on 10m since like you showed it had a workable swr
Awesome! It's funny you mention PVC pipe for a mast. I was just thinking about builds with one last night. I'm curious if the length that the slinky is extended changes the SWR much. If so, a PVC pipe marked with different bands would be nifty. I've read that you can clamp sections of the slinky together at the bottom to shorten it. 73, Bobby
@@W6IWN_Radio I have read the same thing about length and swr. I used a pvc pipe because I was having issues with the fishing pole collapsing with the slinky.
@dadsrcworkbench1322 These are the masts I use. I just twist it tight as I extend it. amzn.to/4ffLvDf
@@W6IWN_Radio yep I use the same ones for my QTH Hf antenna and mobile masts
I might have to pick up a Slinky and give this a try.
It's fun to experiment with. You can make a dipole with 2. I worked France with it during good band conditions last year! czcams.com/video/IFKAcCREPHs/video.htmlsi=CIs-16upsFgAnGXN
First time watcher, enjoyed the video here. AA9IG is the call. I used to have a friend that used a pair of slinkies in a dipole configuration suspended via NYLON rope about 60' in the air. I am not sure that he didn't use 2 slinkies per side of the dipole. Anyway, he fed it with 450 ohm ladder line with a home made tuner. He swore he could tune the thing from 160 to 10 meters. He did state however the inductance at low frequencies was hard to capacitively tune out. He also employed some sort of pulley/nylon rope configuration to lengthen and shorten the slinkies while in the air. I would have loved to play with something like this in my younger days! And by the way, he also stated that the slinkies rusted badly over time. The time frame would have been in the early 1990's. Take care and please upload more!
@jonsymmonds1120 AA9IG, thank you 😊 I've been wanting to experiment with the dipole slinky configuration for some time... That sounds like a really awesome setup your friend had! I don't think they make the slinkys the way they used to. I want some brass ones, but they are expensive now! Thanks for watching, 73
Are you sure the inductance problem was on the LOWER frequencies and not the higher ones? It seems counterintuitive to me.
great job thanks 73 from kb2uew
Pretty interesting. I don’t know a ton about this subject.

The Tidradio H3 is NOT water resistant. If this radio is water resistant,it would literally be a perfect radio. Tid Radio, are you listening???
he never said it was...
My 1st H3 went out in flames while charging, replacement radio doesn't transmit at all. TID refusing to send the replacement, advising me to put the battery of replacement radio to 1st radio (one that burned out in flames). Tragi-Comedy...
I'm sorry to hear about your experience. No fires here so far!
@@W6IWN_Radio I was able to use it for one day on first charge, and second charge, battery charging controller circuit was a culprit of fire. Started to feel burning plastic smell after 20 minutes charging, I didn't know what is it, came back from outside, was walking my dog, started looking in the kitchen, around the stove, finally, I literally saw the radio burning. If I wasn't working from home that day, my house would be gone now. Insane.

Please note that if you order the Baofeng programming cable from Radioddity for this radio it WILL NOT work with the UV-25. It was built with too much material around the plug-in and WILL NOT seat into the radio programming receptacle. They have zero clue that this is an issue and sent me a replacement that was exactly like the first even though I clearly explained the issue.
Thanks for your feedback! I hope this gets resolved.
What do you have the radio's Input and Output settings at?
Aux in 9 and Aux out 15.
@@W6IWN_Radio Thanks!
@Scott_AI5EF Scott, I hope that helps. This is an older video using the 1.74 firmware, I believe. With the 1.79 firmware, you don't need to adjust the filters. Just select USB-D mode, and the filters are preset preset. 73
@@W6IWN_Radio I'm using 1.79 & 1.80. You got me into the ballpark.

Let's do this
I tested many of these batteries - they average out about 5150mA/h. The initial ones released were labelled as 2800mA/h…
For the benefit of someone who hasn’t touched a Slinky™ since I was a kid 😀 - are there different sizes of slinkies? Did you buy a _”genuine”_ one or a knock off? How far will one stretch (and still go back to its original size)? I saw (on _AliExpress,_ I think) a loading coil for a _PAC-12_ antenna for a reasonable price. I wonder how adding one of those to your setup (to _base load_ it) would work. All of my HF gear was stolen (uninsured!) over a decade ago, and I’m looking to get back into the HF portion of the hobby. I’d like to start by putting together a (QRP) _”go pack”_ for HF, piece by piece, with _”affordable”_ ham gear (if that even exists). *73 de AF6AS*
@ChaplainDaveSparks I was using the Slinky original. It was like 5$ or so on Amazon. I'm sorry to hear about your gear getting stolen 😔. I would recommend an EFHW wire antenna for a good budget multiband antenna. You can make your own for a low cost.

@MrMudsRadioTime Thanks, Mr. Mud! I hope to have a lot of fun with it! The band conditions were junk today. I was getting a lot of noise from a nearby weather station as well.
Just updated mine with that usbc cable perfectly. Thanks for the video
@9877joseph Thanks for watching! I'm glad to help. I hope you enjoy the new firmware.
I have an hf rig mounted in my truck. I own a Hustler mobile vertical but for kicks I decided to try running a wire (maybe 35(ish) ft long using a 1:1 BALUN with a counterpoise cut for 30 meters along the ground. I ran the radiating element up to and routed it along the aluminum eve of my front porch in the pocket just under the gutter. This is facing South. I used nails in place from Christmas lights to hold said antenna wire in place. I don’t know how the aluminum may have played into the characteristics of the antenna but living in Southern Illinois, I was able to tune 20 meters and receive and contact SSB up and down the Eastern Seaboard, Florida, all of the way into Texas and Oklahoma in the early morning hours. This kind of faded by mid morning though as conditions changed. It worked quite well and is the closest that I’ve come to running a “Gutter Antenna”.
instant follow when you gave your pup water in the middle of working a pileup
Try using Flrig for CAT control and select Flrig as your Radio in WJST-X. I hope that helps. 🙏
Menuda BASURA! 73s
I really wanted this radio, I really wanted to like this radio but, I ordered one with a second battery that promptly shorted out, once I charged it. dead... day number two, ( after a few good QSO's) I noticed no power output - zero... after charging it on its cradle .... I'm wondering if the stun/kill feature somehow engaged ? really weird behavior . my good old UV5R is about 12 years old, and it has never had any issues- ever , and it's so worn out that the keys are worn out- it has been everywhere with me. so this whole thing left a bad taste in my mouth. I don't know if this is a CHIRP issue or a stun/kill (somehow) or charging issue? I'm going to try flashing the firmware - hoping that it solves the TX issues? friends say - so what it's a $30 radio, but so is my old timer.
Sorry you're having this experience. I haven't has any of those issues. I would email TidRadio or whoever you bought it from and ask for a replacement. I've heard about people overcharging with USB-C and burning out the battery.
@W6IWN_Radio I think I got a lemon.. already reported the battery, i just don't want to report the radio , they will think I'm the fault. I'll just use it as a receiver. Or just harvest the batteries for other stuff. Very unhappy, I thought these things were great, hearing all the good videos. Don't want another one, too many strike-outs. 73 !
