There's a big divide between late 60's funk, early 70's funk, and the later more boogie oriented stuff. Most want late 60's. I'd say Bobby Byrd, JB's, Archie Bell and the Drells, James Brown, Marva Whitney, Dyke and the Blazers, Isley Brothers early releases on T-Neck, and Little Royal would all fit that late 60's funk mold.

Just listened to a CD copy of Fleetwood Mac Rumours and it seemed LOUD and bright so I stopped it after a few songs. Then I put on a vinyl OG copy, and it was like a fresh experience, warm with lots of punch and dynamics. What accounts for this drastic difference in quality? Is it compression/EQ in the mastering?

I just read the Thurston Moore book. He talked about Television and the early CBGB punk scene. Put it more in context for me. A fresh perspective on some bands I never really dove into.
