It uses a paeonic foot (badaBUMbum) which is doubly clever because not only does it sound like horses, the poem IS a paean (a poem of praise and triumph). Perhaps interestingly, all the other poems that I know of with metres that emulate horses (including the Charge of the Light Brigade, the Highwayman, and How they Brought the Good News from Ghent to Aix) all use a trisyllabic foot instead of tetrasyllabic.

So, what do you do when you write a poem and it naturally has heavy use of these devices? Should I change it so it is more focused, even if I don't think it sounds as good? (I love these three poetic devices and like the way they sound when I write them, but don't know if I'm overdoing it since it's throughout the poem. Therefore, calling attention to things I may not have intended.)

Charge of the light brigade is dactylic meter: stressed, 2 unstressed which gives it the galloping feel. Anyway, proud to be a Victorian where a lot of these amazing horseman came from. BTW I have theory that the Man from Snowy River was an aboriginal, which explains his build and his lack of recognition. Back in the day, claiming that the best and most fearless horseman was aboriginal was a non starter.

The notion that we should scrap random association as a means of metaphor discovery is nonsense. I have never tried it but will now, since this is a technique that engages the mind instead of sensoring it, and poets I know who do use it, do so with impressive results.
