Make Songs Not Loops

Fellow CZcamsr @lrgstmrg mentioned in the comments getting stuck in 8/16 bar loops. So I turned on the camera, and hopefully came up with some helpful perspective!
Failing My Way Into Writing A (dope) Theme Song
zhlédnutí 130Před 2 měsíci
A fellow youtube creator asked if I would like to write the theme song for a new CZcams based show called "The Indie Scavenger Hunt". I said yes, and dove right in. It was a bit of a journey but the final results turned out awesome.

Responding to a youtube comment about how I make my synth bass lines. I stack a crunchy sound on top of a subby sound, and nearly every time the results are awesome.

Throwing Up A Camera, And Making Stuff (No Idea What I’m Doing!)
Not sure what to say. This was weirdly entertaining!
Damn I’m so sorry you’ve been through that. You seem like a really cool guy and that breaks my heart. I can see it in your eyes that it hurts you still🫂
Sry to hear :( Insane story. Respect man!❤
Dang bro. You got this. 🫡
I have a ton of respect for you, brother. I'll be here, cheering for you!
Best Thought No Thought
Hola Bandidos. 🤠 Whats the little box below the elektron rythm (i guess). Is it a Torso?
3 monthly listeners on spotify??? It deserves an audience. Almost looks like someone is hiding this stuff by intention. 🤯🤯🤯 Keep going man! Forward momentum
Very King Gizzardish on the 3rd try :). 5 thumbs up aldo to the first try
The switch ❤. It allways occurs some time during yr videos. Gr8 again. 🎉🎉🎉
Would be sweet if you included some namedropping for your hardware stuff. For us GAS heads. 🎉🎉🎉 Wouldnt hurt your SEO either. 🤠
Why is this so easy to forget? How is it so hard to remember?
Ffs, thats hilarious:) Keep making this stuff. 3 fourths into the video I just got this big grin on my face. Thanks again. 😮😮😮
the interlude or maybe the chorus sounds like a very subtle Ott
Can I sample you saying "a 6 hour k hole and forgot to eat food"? im serious
Absolutely!
Love this video, but copying other people's work to learn music production is an incredibly valuable tool. When visual artists go to college they learn by trying to reproduce exactly the works of the masters. Yes, being original should be a goal, but learning how to do exactly what the masters do teaches you so much. Spending a few hours copying even just the structure of a piece you love (not the music, just the sctructure) will teach you so much, even if you perma-delete the end resulys from your hard drive the moment that you finish.
That’s true! And I’m not making a case against the copy method as a value-able method. For those with the yearning for exploration, and the excitement of an over grown path (because nothing is 100% original);however, I think they have fulfilling options, outside of what literally everyone everywhere says to do (go copy a thing). Just wanted to encourage that curiosity and freedom!

best ting I erd today... wooo! camel visuals all the time!
😂 I love camels!!
Your track sounds like a video game about a little jumping blob trying to squash evil worms from space.
Nice I was going more for Pizza Hut with the Boys after drinking too much Mountain Dew and playing Golden Eye until 3am 😂
Oooooh, where can I buy this game, I am already so hooked!!! 🤪
Transitions and good structure is the hardest parts I think. A track is 3 min and all should be connected.
There’s no rules really! A ton of great songs, short or long with jolting disconnected parts. It’s all subjective. Key changes, tempo drops, mood shifts. Even huge hits like “Good Vibrations”. Fine balance between excessive rules and excessive freedom hehe
Oh there it is:)😊
Thanks Hidden Layers, Where is this track in this version so i can mix it into my ecstatic dance set ???
Oh crap, I’ll have to mix it a little bit and bounce it down!
Watched it again. The tune, your vibe, the message. Borderline cheesy, but fits your message perfectly. Good job again! ❤😂🎉
Lol oh man for sure, I’m a total cheese ball! Thank you for chiming in and then dropping these thoughtful comments. Hugely appreciate that!
Hey man. Thanks a lot for that injection of positivity. 1. Decide to make a song. 2. Make a song. 3. Enjoy yourself and spice it up. You just broke my internet. And I agree, it really is that mindnumbing easy. How the hell did it get lost along the way? For me, I guess its two things, reflecting back on your message. Namely tech sessions/song procrastination or just plain laziness. There is nothing wrong with any of my endless bars or tech sessions. But I must not continue to confuse that with songmaking is. It really is about mindset. So from now on. Decide what I want to do before starting. Am i jamming out the perfect groove or a I creating a song. The perfect groove is a tormenting search for perfection, whilst a song is just hard work. Lay out the structure, don't think to hard and as you pointed out. SPICE IT UP LATER. Thanks again man, a lovely video! ❤ 😂🎉
Exactly!! If you’ve been making sick grooves and loops then 100% you definitely have killer songs in your arsenal, just gotta let em unwind!!
I like that you captured this from a DVD
Oh that would be cool but that’s just a filter I slapped on in the editing app 😂
Thanks for watching btw, stoked you’re still here. What have you been working on?
@@HiddenLayersMusic haha I know, was kidding.
@@HiddenLayersMusic Ya I like what you do, I’m around :) Been doing some techno, maybe it’s time I put up something on the channel and I’ll share. I did a bad capture of something on my A4MKII last few weeks. Still learning to record audio properly. I’ll do it for the next one
🤣
Very nice. My earballs are pleased
The video was good--- i just finished watching. I'll go through all your other videos next. 👌
Thanks for watching! Really appreciate that!

Are you a Hipyo tech's brother
I’m actually not sure what that is!
My total song transformation has begun!!!:)
This is the entertainment I need in my life brother, I have missed ya!
Almost 24 hours in, how would you describe the totality of transformation so far?
@@Fr33_K3y I havent implemented the things I learned yet, but I am working on some new songs, so we shall see!!! Im recording tomorrow:)
Only 3 minutes in, how do you only have 83 subscribers dude, this stuff is brilliant! Very inspiring, keep it up!!
Really appreciate that, thank you!
Awesome! The song reminds me of those old Bullfrog games like Theme hospital and Dungeon Keeper. Keep it up!
That’s awesome & thank you!
Also what was that song used in the sped-up part?
Boom! czcams.com/video/NJF7ZygBBYU/video.htmlsi=6oSB_VEXTbpmkvWJ
Great video.
Thank you! Really appreciate that.
this is so jovial
Thank you, love that word, jovial, it’s a great word!
Loop-making sessions "turn into six or eight hour K holes, and you're like, "oh! I forgot to eat."" I feel personally attacked 😅
😆 3 square meals a day, or else ! 😂
Working on a follow up that’s more concrete help!
Don't say "K holes" in Sweden. It's like "F holes" in english. 😊
@@jenstornell I’m confused haha. An F-Hole, like the sound hole in a string instrument?
Dude, this is brilliant. Honestly, the video editing is rather amusing, loving your vibe. You are a funny dude and I am looking forward to more of you videos and watching your channel grow! Remember, you can't stop ethiopian jazz.
Thank you for such an awesome comment! Really appreciate that. Ethiopian Jazz Forever!! 😃
@@HiddenLayersMusic Gotta say, I agree, I dig the vibe. Resonate with a good bit of this/you & your outlook, and as a “traditional instrument playing musician” it is so important to jam on something. Really dig the pitched perc hits/pluck sound in the interludes, and the hint of “oh it may get grimy” bass line. I’ll be looking forward to the next round
For me it's 'make songs, not riffs'.
Haha! The riff graveyard is full!
Also updated the title (good call!), thanks!
@@HiddenLayersMusic hehe, nice!
First of all, how are you? I missed you man! Thank you for the inspiration. Second... is that Luna you are running?
Doing awesome! Hope you’re well too! Luna it is! My fav of the bunch
Awesome tuneage! What gear are you using (mainly the grey synth and the one on your desk)?
Thank you! Grey = Elektron Analog 4. Desk = Elektron Analog Rytm. The keyboard is also an Elektron. Started with 1. 5 years later I have 3 😆
@@HiddenLayersMusic Absolutely! And thank you for the reply. Much appreciated.
This video has a 80's vibe haha. Keep up the good work mate!
That’s cool, I love the 80’s! Appreciate that mate!
This is cool. We seem to have a pretty similar workflow, but I'm still figuring out how to take things beyond those 8 and 16 bar loops and give my tracks a little more structure. I never realized that there was so much about music I didn't understand until I started trying to play it. Loving the videos, by the way. Keep 'em coming.
Thank you! I usually write full songs actually I’m kind of obsessed with it. That’s actually a great idea for a video! I’ll have to do that one next, thank you for the feedback!
Your channel kicks bro.. rips, um, slaps... hits. . ? Well anyway, it most suredly (insert latest + hippest complimentary & endearing term of overtly enthusiastic excitement for describing one's own personal opinion quite honestly) _____ , most definitely.
