    Tip! Throwing a hook punch... turn palm away. This puts your knuckles out further. Furri-Uchi Mounted my Makiwara to my dumbell rack. Over 600lbs on it, doesn't budge.

    This is not only foolish but unnecessary for the average karteka. Unless you are a professional fighter or compete in board breaking (also dumb) then don't waste your time and risk damage. Focus your time on proper technique and increasing your grip strength.

    • @tatsudojollc4694
      @tatsudojollc4694 Před 2 lety

      Thank you for your comment and opinion. I think most practioners would agree that hand conditioning like this is prevalent in traditional forms like karate and kung fu. There are anatomical benefits as long as this is done safely, over time. While increasing grip strength is very important, conditioning the bones, muscles and tendons of the hands and forearms to strike a hard surface such as the jaw bone is necessary to avoid injury. Thanks again for your comment.

    I actually liked that the video was on the long side..You took the time to give some good explanation ❤️ I am working on my own indoor Makiwara right now, the table legs ya added was a cool idea🙂 Not sure if this would help, but I have a soccer ball from years ago that I cut a little 2 inch cut in and filled with beach sand, then sealed it with a strip of medical tape.. I put it in a laundry bag and it gives a nice solid conditioning object that has a nice Ballance of absorbing yet being firm for practicing head strikes.. it feels so different from a heavy bag and ya definitely need to use caution because the round shape teaches ya fast if you are not landing your punch quite right.. learned that the fun way😄 Something about the sphere shape definitely helped with ensuring I had more precise landings though.. It was cool you started to explain a bit on the knife hand and ridge hand strikes...That would be a really cool video for you to go into detail on if you ever get the chance.. Just amazing folks can land those with power with an open hand..I alway had a hard time grasping the proper form that keeps the other bones supported. Because it would seem like on impact it should feel the way our hand does if we shook hands with someone and they squeezed it to be a jerk...like how the other bones squish if your hand is open.. vs if we made a fist and they squeeze they are supported.. but as I said I never learned to do them properly. It would be a neat in depth video though🙂 Thanks again for sharing your knowledge. Always great to see new ways to approach stuff❤️

  • @hope4ourfallen

    During conditioning how do we ensure the safe conditioning of the tendon that goes over the knuckle (the sagittal band) I have only been able to find info on conditioning the bones, but never info that explains how to get your hand strong while avoiding a sagittal band tear? Any info would be very much appreciate 🙂 My concern is the stronger the bone...the harder the object driving into the tendon

    • @tatsudojollc4694
      @tatsudojollc4694 Před 2 lety

      Excellent question. The sagittal band is an aponeurosis, a flat band of fibrous tissue that takes the place of a tendon in broad muscular areas. For example, a large swath of the calf muscles are connected to the tibia by aponeurosis. Striking hard objects, as seen here can and will cause scarring, particularly in the synovial joints. However, slow, methodical practice, not just working through pain, can cause subtle physiological and neuromuscular responses the EVENTUALLY lead to a desired outcome . But you can't start out this way. This is the product of 40 years of conditioning.

      @@tatsudojollc4694 Thank YOU sir for taking the time to help guide me on this❤️ I have searched endlessly yet you are the first person who really addressed the band directly with me🙏❤️ Aside from slow and steady are their any other key things to look out for to avoid causing more harm then good as we try to strengthen the tendon? Or is all kinda occuring in unison with the bone and skin toughening? I guess my question is on how to tell ya gave the tendon enough time to catch up to the healing of the rest of your hand, or if just happens in unison with the rest of the hand? Or should extra caution be placed until a certain point that allows you to know the tendon it self has grown stronger? Like after calluses develope or some indicator that there is protection for the band? (I was just giving an example because I have no clue what to look for to know the tendon is safe to keep going) Any tips would be AWESOME ❤️

      @@hope4ourfallen Thank you for your interest. Conditioning the hands and knuckles, no matter how safely or correctly you practice, does present risk of injury, damage and/or alteration to your joints. Now, of course, this is the goal if you are talking about a life time of training, particularly in karate or another striking art. Probably not something you want to do if you are a brain surgeon, but most people can train this way and produce the results they desire without causing dysfunction or arthritis. Keep in mind, those things are always a risk. My best advice is not to engage in this type of conditioning just because some might say, "that's just the way it's done." You can attain many of the same benefits by using a heavy bag, wraps and gloves. Boxers hit hard, you know? You may want to take a look at another video we put up last week on building a makiwara and how to use it. czcams.com/video/Z9i5VbIsChc/video.html It's a little long but does address some of your concerns. Thanks again for watching.

      @chojinkid Před 2 lety

      @@tatsudojollc4694 first barehanded punch I threw at a guy who attacked me I damaged the sagittal band of my third mcp, it took me 4 months to recover and train again (I didn't go for surgery cause I never lost the movements though it seems to have caused me a minor subluxation), and I'll probably never be like before, I can now train and spar light contact with wraps and 16 ounces gloves but I kinda lost my strong hand as I fear it might get worse if I tried to punch full contact again. So do you think these exercises will reinforce bands and tendons as well? cause bones are fine here, I didn't expect to damage tendons or any soft tissue...
