He Was a genius politician and survived the revolution to become Napoleon's foreign minister, after which he restored the Bourbon Monarchy. After they proved unsuitable, in 1830 he brought the Orleanist King to the throne. Napoleon noted that Talleyrand (Foreign Minister and his best advisor) was always calm, and "treated his friends as if they might one day be enemies, and his enemies as if they might one day be friends." Unexpected but useful advice for anyone. He had learned to mistrust but be courteous to everyone, be secretive about this thoughts and goals, and to confide in very few people. He also was wise enough to see, very young, that to force himself to be patient to wait for the right moment to act was to ultimately ensure success for his long. term planning. (He was a master of delayed gratification.). In the same vein, he refused to let himself take insults personally or bear a grudge.He knew that Getting emotional was counterproductive. If he decided to take revenge for insults, he waited until the right time to engineer some unexpected but creative ploy to bring down his enemies.
