    I don’t think it was got ‘till it’s gone” that was the problem, it was releasing “go deep” and “I get lonely” as singles, should of been the title track “velvet rope” and “what about”.

    I actually really like Kylie Minogue. I was really young when "Fever" was released and I had a lot of judgment about her apparent sluttiness, how her face indicated she was well over 30, but she was still flaunting her body in these really revealing outfits. Only after looking at interviews of her, I realize she seems to be such a nice and genuine person, and her songs were actually really good. As a performer, she's top-tier. I would have never guessed she struggled to stay relevant; she remains so likeable today.

    I agree Jonny, Hard Candy was an amazing album that in my opinion, still kept madonna as a trend setter rather than a follower. Although she did hop on the timbaland and timberlake band wagon, that dose not mean she was not thinking for herself. Madonna has always taken up and coming trends and made them her own since day 1, that’s how she managed so stay around for so long. I think madonna started loosing her own style a little bit during MDNA although I am a huge fan of the album, and from there it was down hill. Thanks for the great Madonna videos as always! ❤ Sending love from Canada ❤️

    One issue I have with the band story, is that they act as if Ulf was the only one with those views. If so, how come the band were called Ace of Base before he joined? ('Ace of Base' is a very specific name related to a famous n4z1 submarine). I suspect the truth is a lot darker than they are claiming...

    The one thing that we forget or we kind of don't want to talk about given how sensitive the topic is; is that we need to look at Nelly's roots. She is the child of working class Portuguese immigrants. Drawing from my limited experience and knowledge; what I have figured out is that these people tend to be much more socially conservative. When I was in University I had a classmate in my history tutorial talk about how she still had discussions/arguments about going to University and moving on to building a white collar career on her own. The way that she described it was that amongst the people in her community seeking higher education was only done if the child in question showed tremendous academic aptitude. For boys if they don't have any plans about what they were going to do with themselves; they would just join their father in the construction industry. As for girls go find a good boy to marry and have a family. Also that sense of Familia was still very strong in that community. These are I suppose the typical horizons of this group of people at that time. I was hearing this back in 2003. Now if we make an inference using what I have just described; think about this. Nelly's parents were fine with letting her going out and build a career in music. That is already something that is atypical. Then as Nelly got more successful and famous she had child and she tried taking her child with her on tour. But she said that she hated doing this and that it did not sit right with her. And I suspect that going out being a popstar as a single mother and hanging out with the rappers/other popstars and etc. who would have been on tour with her (who we now know thanks to the P.Diddy scandal) are all a bunch of Zesty freaks and pervs.) clashed too much with the cultural values she grew up with. In light of all this she made some hard but fundamentally good decisions. She went out and continues to sing Spanish and Portuguese songs. She stayed out of the pop music game. She stayed out of the limelight and focused on raising her kids and that was that. Nelly Furtado did not disappear; she chose to leave and focus on things that were more important to her: family, doing art that she wanted to do and not shame her Raza being being a Popstar Tart when she has already shown us that she is so much more than that as an artist. She left on her own terms and on a high note.

    For me as a Canadian Chinese who is the child of a First Generation immigrant like Nelly; her song Powerless on Folklore speaks to an entire generation of Canadians who questions our cultural identity being children of both the Old World and the New World.

  • @ChairmanMo
    @ChairmanMo Před 12 dny

    With Nelly Furtado she has nothing left to prove to anyone. Just look at her body of work and accomplishments. Now I will not list all of them but there are some that I think are quite striking and unique. - The only Canadian to ever win a Latin Grammy - First Canadian to ever have a song that used as the theme song for the Euro Cup. Then in 2010 another Canadian pop artists ended up having their song be used as a theme song for a major football tournament, I mean the biggest one, the World Cup.

    I find it strange people get so obsessed with having a “main pop girl.” I feel like in the past people listened to a lot of the same stuff because there were less options. Yeah there’s more variety now and less of a broad appeal but I don’t think that’s a bad thing. Still so much good music being released

  • @bandykootkootkoot4334

    Yes, the fame paradigm was changed by the social media. Any plain Jane or just any shmuck has a shot to stardom at the tip of their fingers. But being accessible to fame comes with a cost - the quality is compromised. Reason why influencers like CZcamsrs, TikTokers do the most silly, stupid ass things just to remain relevant and as to why the Kardashians became famous despite the serious lack of any skill or talent. It all boils down to marketing, the same way corporation market the most useless products with colorful packaging, aggressive promotion and hype.

    • @jonnyharvey
      @jonnyharvey Před 21 dnem

      I think the marketing is a far greater factor than in the 80s/90s definitely. The image, brand and social media following plays a far greater part. Hence why so much of the variety and character in popular music is gone.

  • @TheTransatlanticExchange

    Thank you for such a riveting and thorough analysis of this once-unexplainable, but well known phenomenon. It would make sense that the power of a female star overcoming the odds, having once faced ridicule and ostracism, to achieve global success is something that a population of marginalised people facing similar experiences may aspire to. The adoration of these female superstars not only spans the generations since the late 1960s and the time of Stonewall, but has perhaps existed for centuries before. Female stars of entertainment media prior to television, including film and stage, would draw a disproportionately higher number of gay men, perhaps most notably with the musicals of the first half of the 20th Century. The MGM musical backlot was renown for its high number of homosexual men among its creative teams and backing dancers. What will be interesting to observe in the coming decades is whether greater equality in many developed countries will reduce this draw to flamboyant escapism that these women represent. We can already see the generational differences between gay male cohorts, with strong variance almost by decade, since the 1960s as growing acknowledgment, acceptance, and eventually equality took place. Many thanks for such an interesting synopsis.

    Barbra Streisand is one of the first and biggest supporters of the gay community, she already had a lot of gay fans in the 60's and has always supported them, and when Barbra's son Jason later turned out to be gay too, she became even more of a supporter from the gay community, and Olivia Newton-John is an artist that is quickly forgotten, but Olivia said that early in her career she was surrounded by gay people and said that they are the most loyal fans you can have, and Olivia also often performed at Gay parades and Xanadu was even seen as one of the Gay anthems in Australia. I'm speaking for myself now, but I think that why I love female artists so much is because as a gay man I can empathize very well with the song lyrics, because they often sing about men and if you are in love or have a broken heart you will find comfort in their music, and you will adore them as an artist even more.

    • @jonnyharvey

    • @Coffeecorner2000
      @Coffeecorner2000 Před 19 dny

      @@jonnyharvey That's great to hear you became a fan after reading her book and read all about how supportive she still is for the gay community (I still need to read the book but i'm to busy with other things right). I became a huge Barbra fan since since i saw the movie "Yentl" late 80's / early 90's, and I was even lucky to see her live in concert when she did a mini European tour in 2013, and she's amazing and it was experience i will never forget. You've did mentioned Barbra's name but nothing else, but anyone who is a fan of Barbra knows that she is a suporter of the gay community. I hope you will read en learn about Olivia Newton-John, i became a Olivia fan after i see the movie Grease and that is already 39 years ago. 🙂🙂
