I have had a mono pressing of this recording for more than 20 years. I was not aware that this recording was a very early STEREO recording; what a treat. The only recording I can think of that can seriously challenge this one is the early eighties recording with Alicia de la Rocha.

What does "mecolico" on the label mean?

This is the 1965 with Barbirolli. The 1967 with her husband - sadly, only the first movement - is as czcams.com/video/UUgdbqt2ON0/video.html, but with video; for once it's really worth it to actually see her playing. She _is_ the music.

Wednesday Series is awesome, it brought me here. I picked this version for the same intensity it was played on the series. Her career was cut short by multiple sclerosis, which forced her to stop performing at the age of 28; she died 14 years later at the age of 42. The best dies young.

This is my all-time favourite Cello Concerto by Edward Elgar, and great performance by Jacqueline Du Pre and a great interpreter of English music [especially Delius, Elgar and Vaughan Williams] the great Sir John Barbirolli and voted the best 1965 recording as recommended by the BBC Radio 3 called Building A Library and The Penguin Guide To Recorded Classical Music. A great work.

The best performance of this piece that I've heard. Splendid.

Best of the best. That's the version my spanish mother used to listen. It's so beautiful. And Ataulfo Argenta was a real great conductor.

She made this concerto her own. In my humble opinion no other version comes near to hers. Sadly I never saw her perform live but, on the day her death was announced, I played this version as my own personal tribute to a great soul.

Carl Weinrich was a magnificent player...during my undergraduate years, I heard him a number of times in the Princeton University chapel. I could never understand his enthusiasm for the Holtkamp at General Seminary, NYC. I don't know whether it's the organ, the acoustics, or the miking, but the sound is hard and unforgiving. Nevertheless, it's wondrful to hear him again....under any circumstances!

I think this is the best version of Scottish symphony I’ve heard! Bravo maestro Abbado! Only after listening a lot of Mendelssohn, not just his symphonies, but piano, chamber and choral music, we can understand, how grossly music world underrated Mendelssohn. I heard many versions of Scottish, mostly with “ let’s get it over with” attitude. this performance tells that this is a work of a major and wonderful composer, who can not be dismissed as a second fiddler. Mendelssohn’s music should rightfully be next to Mozart’s , Beethoven’s, Schubert’s, Brahms,’ and appreciated as much.

This cello concerto is, next to Dvorak's, the greatest cello concerto ever composed, and this performance by Jacquerline du Pre, with Sir John Barbirolli, is undoubtedly a truely great recording.
