There was one and only one Gilles! Old videos just convey how amazing he was… you had to be there in person to witness! The crowds went crazy. When he came around the circuit with his often sideways Ferrari, the crowd would go wild! Back then you could still see the drivers helmets and gloves as they worked the wheel! we were closer to the track back then… Now everyone is so removed from the circuit, its just not the same same! 🥲

what wasn't mentioned here is that Lauda had picked up some suspension damage during the race, which meant that his car oversteered a lot. that was the main reason why fittipaldi was able to catch him so easily and niki didn't defend. also ferrari put an optimized engine with an extra 8 horsepower into regazzoni's car. my understanding is, that they used clay as a sort of guinea pig to test the engine's durability and they didn't want to do any shenanigans on Lauda's car since he only needed 0.5 points to win the driver's championship.
