    Thanks for this tutorial video. I was using Lightroom for years but wanted to get something different and for free specially as i am only an amateur and not a professionnal and i found Raw Therapee. I think it's really good and event more advanced than Lightroom. I was a bit overwhelmed at the beginning as it as A LOT of functions, much more than Lightroom, but will get my head around it eventually. Your explanations were quite good but if you could do another video and maybe go a bit deeper in some aspects of the software it would be greatly appreciated. As I said, coming from lightroom i've got some experience in processing images but there are things in this software that I've never heard of. If we could have your input that would be great! keep it up. Cheers!

    • @1kwords

      Yes, but since the m4/3 sized sensor only sees the very middle of the image circle of a full frame lens, I feel the full effect is mostly lost so I think it's not worth it.

    What about the A7C? That might fit the bill for you. On the topic of using a camera for a long time... I used a Canon 1000D for about 10 or so years before switching, and ever since I switched, there's been a lot of dissatisfaction. I feel like the more you know what's out there, and the more you look around for options, the harder it is to appreciate what you already have. You become more aware of your current camera's problems, and the grass is always greener. I feel what you said about the perfect camera not existing as well. I shoot an X-T2 now, and I realized I don't like EVFs, and I also don't like how Fujis work in general, so I've been looking around MPB and whatnot, but I really can't settle on anything. The perfect camera for me would be a small one that takes small lenses and has an OVF, which doesn't really exist (well, Leicas exist, but the money in my pocket doesn't... They're also not SLRs). I guess there comes a point where you just suck it up, get used to what you have, and stop thinking about it.

    • @1kwords
      @1kwords Před 7 dny

      After many months of internal turmoil, constantly weighing options, doing a shameful amount of window shopping, I am currently at that point you mention, where I just suck it up and use what I have. And it's starting to feel good, also helped by two things: 1. I can't afford to buy new cameras on a whim, it's something I can only realistically manage once every year, or two, at best and that with a considerable effort. Sure this year has been better than most, as far as finances are concerned, but the fact that I changed systems twice, wasn't without consequences and is now being felt. Things are somewhat tight. 2. I have reached a firm and clear conclusion that the look I am after for my images, the way I see them in my head when I look at what I want to photograph, is best, and perhaps only achieved by a full frame sensor and old manual lenses. As far as the a7C, if we're talking about the mark 1, there are several things wrong with it from where I'm standing. The lack of a fully mechanical shutter (EFCS deteriorates the quality of bokeh at high shutter speeds) the poor evf, the turn-around flippy screen, the insufficiency of customizable buttons, the AA filter, the fact that it's basically the same price as my a7R III and for practically the same money it's inferior in most ways that matter. If you mean the a7CII (or the a7CR) it's all the above and the fact that I can almost buy two a7RIIIs for what it costs...

    • @bigbizniz
      @bigbizniz Před 7 dny

      @@1kwords I was thinking of the mark 1. That's a bummer about the shutter, I didn't know about that. Seems to me like you're in the right place with the a7R. I can't think of any other affordable FF mirrorless cameras that look similarly interesting (I guess that's subjective, though).

  • @whfowle
    @whfowle Před 8 dny

    My approach to the digital Olympus Pen-F comes from the original Pen F which was a half frame 35mm camera system. I almost bought into that system back in the late 60's but was too poor at the time to afford it while keeping my Nikon f system. Fairly recently, I became aware of this digital version and bought one in very good used condition. I already had invested in MFT with a Lumix G7 and later the E-M1 II Olympus. It is, for me, my EDC camera. Small, light, and capable of good image quality. I have other cameras to use for serious work but they are too big and heavy to carry all the time.

    • @1kwords
      @1kwords Před 8 dny

      I understand where you're coming from and I would probably be of the same mind, but I can't afford having both a serious camera and a fun camera. I can only afford one camera and that is where the difficulty lies, that I need my camera to be both fun and serious...

    These assessments are by their nature subjective- including camera looks, handling and even image quality. I think that for people’raised’ on the diet of street photography done with 35 mm film cameras only thing that comes close to the image feel is the combination of full frame and vintage lenses. For others, smaller sensors and digital looks are just fine

    • @1kwords
      @1kwords Před 8 dny

      I may be in a minority as I only did film photography many years after starting photography in the first place. In fact, I started photographing with my phone, then apsc, then, years later only full frame. But it's true. The look I'm after, the way I want my images to look, how I see them in my head when I imagine a scene is easiest and most precisely achieved with a full frame camera and vintage lenses. As far as the nature of these assessments, of course they're subjective. It's the very point of this video, I stated from the get go that these are merely my personal opinions and subjective experience with the camera, and not a scientific, or technical review.

And I have to say, if you're not getting results from the PEN-F that make you happy, it's either defective or you're using the camera for purposes it's not intended. In fact, I think you've missed the whole point of Micro Four Thirds. In light that matches its sensor size, you should see indiscernible difference between cameras from any manufacturer. For instance, the noise I get with my PEN-F at ISO800 is virtually the same as what I get on an APS-C Fuji X100F at 1600, my full frame Leica M10 at 3200 and my 1" Sony RX100 at 400 - all directly proportional to the size of the sensor. When I keep that in mind and don't expect more than what the sensor is capable of, the results are stellar. And regarding the "digital look" you got with it? The PEN-F's sensor is made by Sony. So take one of your full frame Sony images and crop it down to match Micro Four Thirds dimensions and the rendering is IDENTICAL. So, taking into account the size of the sensor in relation to optimal light; if you're seeing a difference in performance, I suggest it's in your mind. I *always* come back to my PEN-F when I want to travel without heavy, bulky gear or know that I'll be shooting in good light (or have a tripod). None of my clients know or care that I used a tiny M4/3 camera instead of a big FF camera because the results are phenomenal. I've even recently licensed two images shot on my PEN-F that were used in a corporate head office waiting room enlarged *floor to ceiling!* One other thing worth mentioning: M4/3 easily outperforms the finest grain film by many times. Yet, those of us who shot film back in the day never complained! So go shoot film exclusively for a month and then come back to the PEN-F. Then perhaps you'll have a different perspective.

      You bring up interesting points. The whole argument about noise and ISO is not something I want to get into as I care very little about it. I don't mind noise, I can happily shoot the PEN-F at it's max ISO and be OK with it. My issue is with the flat, digital look. And that is not something any amount of good light can fix. I just tried cropping a full frame image to MFT size and they look nothing like each other. The cropped full frame image still retains that gentle, soft, natural look that's full of depth, while the MFT image looks flat and harsh and unsophisticated, harsh and digital. Is this all in my mind? Possibly, but improbably.

The pro range can only add better coatings in some cases, more robust construction, weather sealing and a more weight into the equation and not any worthwhile optical improvements, that is how good the non pro lenses are from an optical point of view. Your Pen F was designed a decade ago, so there are shortcomings in AF, processor power ( the majority of the noise shaping of the modern digital cameras are done by the processors ) and yes the EVF is not even as good as the old EM5. An interesting chat on the Pen F and some good points raised. I too have been a bit half hearted on it, but it does have the advantage of being something unique and becoming a bit rare. Its a nice small walk around camera if you are already invested in M4/3 lenses etc. (I am), but it's not my favourite camera. To be fair, I think your impression was probably quite a bit to do with the lens and maybe a bit less with the sensor. The 17mm 1.8 is, in my experience, not the best rendering lens. It can look quite digital, but if you tried it with say the 20mm f1.4 pro or one of the Pana/Leica lenses, you may have got a different impression. For sure the M4/3 isn't the platform of choice for vintage glass. I'm thinking about picking up something like the original Sony A7s for such purposes, but have no intention of quitting M4/3, as I've got the lenses nailed and the portability is unequalled. They, for the most part, are a x100v alternative for less money and, with the option to change lenses, made for a good proposition. I dont know what the latest GH Lumix M43 is like in terms of images, if they retain the flatness you talk about, but its also a bit unfair to compare them to full frame. There's only so much that little sensor can do. I started on apsc sony, moved to Oly Em10-3, then Canon apsc and back to MFT with the lumix GX8. But for me, the way the camera handles is half of the experience or more, and images can be made to look great (in my opinion at least). Sure, low light is not their forte but most have in body ibis and/or in lens ibis and that makes low light a bit better. To summarize, that era of cameras was not really made for pro shooting necessarily but more for enthusiasts shooting street or wildlife. Cheers !

Put anything else on it, the sexy look goes out the window and so does the handling with its practical lack of grip, large size and heavy weight. For stills l also really dislike a flippy screen.

      There is also 28mm f2.8 which goes very well with Nikon. Except that there is the line of 1.8S series 35, 50, 85mm, 135mm although a little bit bigger has a very good optical performance. You will find also brilliant manual focusing leans from Voigtlander like 50mm f2 APO and Voigtlander 35 mm f2 APO. To improve the comfort of handling there are variety of grips so you can find perfect for your needs. Also you can use adapters with almost every leans mount. The flip screen is also not my favourite, but you can close it and use is the EVF (by the way, much more better than that one used by Sony cameras).

      @@tomaszpopiel8450 it's also almost doube the price of the a7R III, which is the main reason why I'm not seriously considering it. I simply can't afford it. The a7R III was enough of a financial effort as it is.

      Yes, it is true it a little bit more from expensive side also for me. Except that I have made my decision and I want to share it with you because I thought it might suit your needs too. Anyway, I keep my fingers crossed for any choice you will make, and I hope some day have a chance to meet you and have a beer 🍺 together and a conversation about photography. Greetings.

      @@tomaszpopiel8450 no doubt, I would love to have a beer with you. Back to the Zf, all that said, size, weight, lenses, prices, I would love to own it. If not for keeps, at least to try it out for a week or two... It sure is a very pretty camera.

    That's what I always felt with my A7R3. It works well and was utterly reliable, never a wrong beat, takes fantastic images et makes files that work well with all majors editors... But it's not pretty or makes feel anything when using it. It's like holding a brick. The little Fuji XT-3 isn't as great but it's nice to hold. Sony should change the shape of their cameras and they'd get a winner.

    I'm of a similar mind in that , there are so many things I like about Fuji , but I prefer (slightly) the look of full frame, I still switch between Fuji xt1 and the Sony a7r3 and still use a canon DSLR . Probably I'm looking for a Fuji user experience and film recipes with a full frame sensor , one day maybe?

      Yeah, that's the gist of it. However it feels like I'm slowly learning to love the a7R III. Using vintage lenses with it certainly helps. Not only are the images beautiful, but they contribute to the look and feel I was after in the first place.
