Obscure Song Reaction - MODELS | Happy Birthday IBM | Early years: 1978 -1982
‘Models’ are an Australian band formed in Melbourne, in August 1978. They are probably best known for their Australian chart success in the mid 80s with songs such as 'I Hear Motion', ‘Out of Mind, Out of Sight’, ‘Barbados’ and ‘Big On Love’. The name of the band was actually taken from a 1978 Kraftwerk song called ‘Das Model’.
But Models’ early line-up had quite a different sound with more esoteric lyrics than their more commercial mid-eighties releases. Once bassist Mark Ferrie departed and was replaced by James Freud, songs became less abstract and more polished. The line up at the time of their debut album 'Alphabravocharliedeltaechofoxtrotgolf’ in 1980 included Sean Kelly on vocals and guitar, Andrew Duffield on keyboards, Mark Ferrie on bass guitar and Janis Freidenfelds (a.k.a. Johnny Crash) on drums and percussion. It would be fair to say that although the band were most comfortable performing live at that point, they were definitely finding their way when recording in a studio.
This video features some general information around the recording of this album which was self-financed and produced in Melbourne with the assistance of an engineer called Tony Cohen prior to signing with Mushroom Records. Cohen later said that recording sessions for the album went on for months.
I also review the last track on the album which, after my first listen, got stuck in my head for most of the day. It’s a simple but quirky track with only 6 words in it, but nonetheless, I decided to do an impromtu vlog and feature this track in it.
An EP release from the band followed in 1981 called ‘Cut Lunch’, then later a second studio album which was this time recorded in England, called ‘Local and/or General.’
Credits: All music rights and images of the band belong to Models. Mike Roberts created the video images for the song.

After heading west from NZ, Cook rounded Hicks Point in Victoria on 19th April 1770 and did a sharp starboard turn to round Cape Howe and head north. 10 days later, he lands in Botany Bay camping on the Kurnell peninsula. He reached Bustard Bay (now the town of 1770) on 23rd May. Later docked at Cooktown on 10th June for repairs which took 7 weeks. The First Fleet under Capt Phillip initially anchored at Botany Bay in 1788 too, but soon relocated to Sydney harbour. Shallow waters at BB, poor soil, and limited fresh water supply supposedly. Cheers.
