Worn Out Tyres on My Bülk Velomobile?
I'm getting redy for commuting by a velomobile after a long time. So it's better to change tyres and do some other things to make my Bülk velomobile ready.
This Bülk velomobile is now mine. I bought it from Velomobileworlk.com.

Wow! I'm impressed by your ability to control your velomobile so efficiently! As a guy who is about to purchase his first first machine, I am impressed by your ability to control your power... and everything else associated with the muscle-powered machine. You have confirmed that it is absolutely imperative that the Watts, pedal rpm, gps ground speed, and % inclination should be taken into consideration. Heart-rate is something that I should pay attention to, since I have atrial fibrillation-an irregular heartbeat. None-the-less, a great presentation-something that everyone interested in velomobiles should pay attention to! Thanks for confirming my thinking about the engineering aspect of the sport.

  • @DavidGierke-nl1dl

    At the advanced age of 82, I have decided-after several months of intense research- that I am going to purchase a new WAW velomobile with E-assist. The number one feature: The removable front and rear cones for easy access to the mechanical components! Second: Although the WAW is an "old" design, I feel (admittedly from my limited experience) that many of the more modern designs have copied the WAW's innovative first efforts. This is all beside the point to an old guy; I don't want to be scrounging around on the ground to change a punctured tire. If I have to remove a few retainer machine screws to remove the tail-cone (I wish they were quarter-turn Zeus fasteners) to access the WAW's workings... I'll gladly do it. Third: despite the shrill pleas of the "all carbon" crowd, I'll gladly forgo a few pounds of all-up weight to gain safety with the carbon-reinforced kevlar construction that is more easily repaired, along with the 18-20 pounds of E-assist hardware to make it up the hills, accelerate through stop-and-go intersections, and get back home if I run out of "gas." If you think that my objectives are unrealistic and trivial, remember this: 70% of America's wealth resides with citizens 65 years and older; we retain the buying power within our society... not the body-strong youth who don't. The free-world's velomobile marketing strategy is completely BACKWARDS. Start catering to the old farts. In that regard, I salute the makers of the WAW machine.

      There’s few issues with the Bülk wiper. First, it does ok work, but it’s not perfect. It leaves some water behind. But it still increases the visibility considerably. Second, there’s a gap at the bottom of the visor and some water splashes to the inside surface of the visor. The problem is worse the heavier the rain is. You can’t do much about the first problem, because of the curvature of the visor. Maybe try to source better quality rubber for the wiper. For the second problem you could try to block the gap under the visor. I havent got around to try it yet. I should try it because it might solve some other problems as well 🤔

    • @mnveloguy
      @mnveloguy Před 5 dny

      @@TheVelomobileChannelthe gap under the visor is there to let the air flow to clear the visor. Now with the visor insert that shouldn’t be needed so much. The wiper from Velomobil-SH I think works better. It fits the shape of the visor better.

And I'm a quite heavy rider with my 100 kg in my DF XL. Maybe checking your alignment is not a bad idea. Drive safe while commuting! 🙂

  • @arjenhoogcarspel4193

    Nice to see you post again. Schwalbe one is terrible quick wearing. Better use Continental Contact Urban next time. Very low rolling resistance, great grip in wet conditions and very low wear. I did about 4500km on a set of 40-406 on my Quest XS and they are still fine. Still have to try the 32-406.

    • @pg5200
      @pg5200 Před 5 dny

      I have 32-406 Contact Urban on my DF front wheels. The first set made more than 10000 km, I replaced them (for the same ones !) after the first puncture but they weren't even worn down to the thread yet ^^ Very good tyres indeed.

  • @tillmannfischer
    @tillmannfischer Před 6 dny

    2,300 km seems to be okay for 406-size tyres - smaller tyres are often made from softer rubber in order to get decent grip at the typically higher RPM they have to run at (which is even more true for a VM), so they wear out quicker than their larger-diameter counterparts. Which you will notice when looking at the rear wheel of your Bülk. :D By the way, I switched from the tubeless set-up installed by the previous owner with Schwalbe Pro One Record Edition tyres on my W9 to Schwalbe One with normal butyl tubes, and there is a noticeable difference in speed (although it doesn't bother me that much, because the W9 is still plenty fast). As the Bülk is also a very fast VM, I'd consider Schwalbe Pro One Super Race tyres, if you can get them on sale. Puncture resistance should be mostly similar, but the POSR ought to run with much less resistance. Apparently, people have been running them with tubes just fine, despite them being meant for tubeless setups. How hot do Finish summers get (and how humid)? If I use the hood in summer here in Germany, I feel like I'm in a steam-bath, so I just accept that I get a wet upper body when it rains. My legs and feet stay dry, and my upper body is wet with sweat anyhow, so why bother protecting my head from rain...

  • @rhein228
    @rhein228 Před 6 dny

    I always put max pressure, which is 8 bar on mine. Helps with avoiding punctures.

    • @Surestick88
      @Surestick88 Před 5 dny

      Does it though? Higher pressure = more pressure on the ground in the contact patch = more force trying to push sharp objects through the tires. Rolling resistance is going to be higher with overinflated tires as well.

    • @rhein228
      @rhein228 Před 5 dny

      @@Surestick888 bar is not over-inflated on Schwalbe One but the recommended maximum pressure. You may be right theoretically, but my empirical evidence appears to support my approach. On the current set of tires which I mounted a year ago or about 10 k km I have not had a flat. The previous set was similar.

    • @tillmannfischer
      @tillmannfischer Před 6 dny

      Schwalbe didn't really change the One tyres since 2021, though. So if these tyres were stored properly, they shouldn't have aged much or at all since then. And aging tyres get harder, not softer, so they should actually last longer in usage - I wouldn't recommend that, though, because grip and especially wet grip and grip on cold surfaces suffers massively after a certain point (we're talking something like 10 years of bad storage!), having a huge impact on braking distances. Especially with tyres as slim as in this case, although you can notice the difference even with car tyres. On that matter, funny anecdote: I used to drive a Mia Electric (cute, little, french electric car), and the original tyres were really old when I got it. After I switched to new tyres, my maximum range actually got down, because the new tyres were properly soft and flexible. :D

    • @mnveloguy
      @mnveloguy Před 6 dny

      @@tillmannfischer according to Specilaized tires if stored properly last for about 3-6. If exposed to extreme temperatures, UV, humidity, etc they can degrade much more quickly. This according to testing done by Specialized. Whether they rot or become more brittle and hard depends on the storage conditions.

Battery health is decreased a lot more when you drain it to zero than if you went all the way to 100% Keeping the battery at zero or at 100% for too long will kill it faster. My computer is Wahoo Elmnt Bolt (1st gen). Newer models get more features. I’ve heard new Wahoo models can even remote control the light setting on the radar unit.

    Pros: leaf spring suspension; storage in front(ventilation?); steering setup(racecar grips with controls and computer between); outrigger wheels suggests narrower body for reduced drag, rear view camera so less drag from mirrors. Cons: on other video I saw, the chain and cartridge on rear wheel are exposed to elements; needs fenders on wheels… and the rest were discussed already. I’m excited about what’s available in current models, because the door is wide open for something truly amazing with all these great features to arrive. Hopefully built in North America, because the import costs are so high.

    @TheVelomobileChannel Saukki, is the Bülk so much wider at the shoulders than the Milan? I only have one pad either side at the shoulders. I do have to put 6 pads behind the seat for the right angle though, and moved the seat back one mounting slot on a 5-position seat bracket I got from Johan @ HoVelo. I ride with a helmet though, so I am using a small Ventisit pad on the QV (Barney) and nothing at the moment on Mint Sauce (Milan GT).

      I don’t know about the Milan GT, but the Bülk definietly is much wider than the Milan SL.

    I really liked watching you ride in the rain. You are so much more comfortable and drier than me on a day like that which normally I would just skip. If I had a velomobile I would not mind riding in those conditions. Also I think your speed was good given the non optimal road conditions.
