United States
Registrace 28. 03. 2007
Scott Ainslie came of age during the Civil Rights era and found himself with black elders in the heart of a black church at age 16. He has sought out senior musicians in the southern Old-Time tradition and in the Blues and Gospel traditions of the mid-South. Having elders on both sides of the color line in the south, Ainslie brings stories and music to bear on the powerful musical traditions that he inherited from them and in the music he makes. This channel aims to be a showcase for the power integrity, and joy of those traditions: their music and history.
The Land That I Love © ScottAinslie
Haunted by a story I heard on NPR (no kidding), I took months to research and write this song, then would not perform it without driving it individually past two respected, Latino musicians and asking for corrections and feedback: Tomas Montoya and Dr. Jose Cuellar, who both played with me on the track we produced for No Mas Muertes. Grecia Cruz and her uncle were both lost in the Sonoran Desert in mid-June 2007. This is for them.
This video is my submission for NPR's 2024 Tiny Desk Concert: a way of paying them back and an issue, given our current state of affairs, that is pressing on us all.

One of my dearest and oldest friends, Al Petteway, passed away with a late-diagnosed esophageal cancer that just ran away with him on September 25, 2023. He passed over in his own home with his wife, Amy White, and one of his daughters by his side, his other daughter was struggling to get home to him in time. Knowing how ill he was, I was in a hurry-building this video for him as he was dying, ...

(Uploading the correct version now! Ah, well...) When it comes to how your fretting hand addressed the guitar, there are a number of right answers and a few wrong ones. Both are based on principles of ergonomics. Your playing can be easier or harder depending on how you address the guitar for different chords and sounds. Making music is intensely physical and paying attention to how the body is...

(A re-edited version. I have no idea what happened to the previous edit...) The dirty secret of playing slide guitar is that it is not the sound you make that makes slide guitar sound so good, it is the sound you stop. Muting with both hands is critical to controlling what sounds reach the listener. Noisy slide playing is fine with me in its place, but when I want you to hear the voices of ange...

This short cell phone video presents the fruit of my teaching yesterday. As I was struggling to make clear to my compadre how to reposition his left hand as he addressed the guitar to play slide, I decided to have him unmount the slide and just focus on hand posture. It was helpful to isolate for a moment the hand from the music. Many of us have decades of ingrained habits for holding the instr...

Great content, some of your other YT content dis-inclines me to back your Patreon, but the quality of this inclines me to leave a comment.
Well, I haven’t seen any of your work. So, frankly you can kiss my ass. Keep your fucking comments to yourself. ‘If you can’t say anything nice..’ and ‘It’s easy to criticize the fighter in the ring from the peanut gallery. (You see I was inclined to leave a comment, too: go fuck yourself.
Damn, you can sing beautifully as well! Some guys just have it all.
Thank you. I have always sung well, but blues asks more than that. I built this voice over forty years. There are things to be learned. It is not a talent, but work. I’ll wager you can sing well, too! All the best, s.
Awesome Scott…see at the Balsam Inn this July 2024
That is fine news. Bring some friends! We’ve never played the room before. Good friends there though. Join us…s.
It is kind of strange that I saw this tuning and barely have a clue about scales and chords and just messed around (Doodling) and started playing things that sounded good to me. Now I know what they are.... Don't laugh Music is suppose to be fun, but if you enjoy a laugh go ahead. 😊
Music theory, like all theory, follows practice. We make sounds we like, find moving or interesting. We may then identify them or not. If you do identify what you are playing (what note is the root, third, fifth? &c.), then you can often reuse that understanding and those shapes/constellations in other contexts. A certain increase in freedom comes with each increase in understanding. 0:05
Thank you Scott, your method of teaching is soo enjoyable and informative. I have your dvd and book. Would love to have a online Skype lesson if people. 👍👍

That was fantastic, I followed right up to about 4.40, clear as day, but have had a couple of beers lol, I'll come back tomorrow.. Brilliant tho!,
At 16 minutes, you say that it sounds like African drumming when one fingerpicks a Hurt figure while muting the strings. I knew that makes a rhythmic sound, but I don't think I ever connected it with African drumming. Very interesting insight! Thanks!
I realized that was the sound when I was demonstrating various rhythms without pitch for a class. We work from gross to fine. Separating out the left and right hands can be immensely useful. Thanks for writing.

Very nice arrangement. There is another video of you playing this arrangement on a dreadnought about seven years ago. You haven't missed a beat on this beautiful OM. You are an inspiration to all of us who pick with two fingers.
This guitar is another Froggy Bottom, a Gibson-inspired Model C. Thanks for listening and especially commenting. Good to have the company!
Wow, I love this version. though it is a cover version but it so pretty much classic. Salute
Your comment makes me very happy. Many thanks.
This tuning resonates with my soul! Thank you for inspiring me to play a guitar again!
Wonderful!
Very helpful video, thank-you! Maybe it’s the camera angle, but you appear to be holding the guitar at a steeper neck angle, maybe 30 to as much as 40 degrees above horizontal.
Yes. Horizontal necks will cripple your access to the upper frets if you keep the slide in the correct position. Try it. Horizontal is bad. Try it both ways, you'll see.
Thank you so much! This really helped my guitar skills :)

Hello Scott. By the tittle I thought it would be a song ( with lyrics of love, héhé), but I enjoyed very much the beautiful melody and your playing. Like 👍
The lyrics actually have never lived up to the music. Cliches sound terrible when they meet a melody with such obvious pathos…
Very touched, moved by the lyrics of your beautiful, but sad song : "your small farm that we watter with tears '.....what an image . My english is not perfect but I understand well what you want to say. Great performance and wonderful guitar playing. Thank you for sharing : big like 👍 Greetings from France.

I know the Gods adore you. And the Goddesses too. John’s birthday is February 25. He was born in 1924, he would have been 100. Where does the time go? The last time I saw you you sang a song about a Latina woman. I can’t remember if her name was Rosalita or Grace. And I loved that song too.
My dear sister, not a day goes by I don't think about John and with him, you. And this is that song you remembered. Grecia Cruz is the woman who was lost, and Rosalita is nod to Woody Guthrie's song about the los alamos canyon tragedy. @@patriciabyerly3162

@@scottainslie Thanks man!!✌️
I made up that position for playin slide all by myself. Then, I said to myself, that is wrong, according to everything I've ever been told. But, Scott is so right. It is so much easier to play like that. Thank you Scott.
Making music is a very physical act. Ergonomic considerations can make it easier or harder.
Sweet groove. Hard to do that.
There is a swing in Hurt's style. Many folks hear (or worse, see) it as square eights, when it is actually a quarter note-eighth note triplet. Thumb first, but the hammers and such are just delayed from where the square notes would be, and land on the beat (with a thumb notre, the thumb playing every beat. Took some time....s.
Absolutely beautiful! .... But...not quite in tune.
and absolutely out of reach
Thank you
