This is how my mother did it, but I always pulled too tight. Thank you so much for the tip. I was wondering if there is any way to regulate the space between the stitches, so the results are neater than what i am getting now?

"As long as you want". I have nobody to help me. By myself, I can only do about 1.5m max (before ply). With a lot of work, I can double it. But it is a lot of hassle making short lengths. And they are hard to store. I want to do 100 - 200m or more in one go. I want to ply 16 strands of sewing thread into one small rope. And then repeat it again in the opposite direction to get a good sized rope about 5mm in diameter.

If you put Press and Seal handiwrap on the back of your rug, the sharp little tines on your gripper won't pull your yarn out when you take your rug off the stretcher.

Omg thank you! This is how I learned as a child but now that I'm trying to pick it up again I kept finding videos showing the "long tail" method. Why overly complicate things just to get a bonus row after casting on? Also as a macrame-er what you did would be called a slip knot followed by half hitches.
