All is one is the wool being pulled over your eyes by the snake. Only fools believe in a single force of complete power omnipresent and cruel god who sends both good and evil. The Cathars represent the Gnostic denial of false unity consciousness (the wool pulled over your eyes.) which is the illusion that their is one all powerful cruel god controlling everything when in fact the Good Creator Amen Ra (which means the Light From Stars) and Osiris (father of man)is battling for our souls with Seth (Satan)and Apophis (the 7 headed dragon). Satan and the Dragon-snake.

In Japan, Confucianism is often vilified as one school of thought that has done a lot of harm to the integrity of Japan and still continues to exert undesirable influences to the people's ideological background. I bought into that idea so I've been blindly against anything Confucianism especially the ethics even though, as you've pointed out, it comes in different flavours. This is a fascinating lecture and is making me reconsider the way I look at Confucianism. Thank you.

The 5 Skandhas do not refer to elements that constitute the "universe", but rather, the experiences we have that create or make up our sense of "I", "ego", or "self". The skandhas relate to how we conceive/form our sense of "self", not the "world" per se. For instance, we experience rupa (things, environment, etc) and attach to it, forming a sense of ourselves as we identify with those things/situations. We have physical sensations and feelings (vedana) and identify with them, creating a sense of our ego. We have various mental perceptions (samjna) of the world and environment and attach to it, forming a sense of ourselves as we identify with it. We have our opinions, beliefs, likes and dislikes (samskara), and attach and identify with it, forming a sense of our ego. We have the underlying consciousness that is aware of all these things, and we attach to it, forming a sense of our self. These are gradations of experience from gross to subtle, that we attach to and identify with, that ultimately inform and create our "ego." But otherwise, enjoying your informative lectures.

BA in Religious Studies and a Masters in Religion here and these are genuinely the best lectures on the subject matter I've come across! One thing I'm still trying to figure out: I've heard the idea that the extreme realms (heaven and hell) are upaya before but what I can't figure out is whether or not that is a fairly standard opinion among practicing Buddhist philosophers/leaders traditionally or is that more of a modern development? Is it sort of like Plato's Noble Lie or an evolution of Buddhist teachings?

    • @BryanVanNordenPhilosophy

Thank you for your kind words! I think most lay Buddhists and even many monks and nuns think the stories of heavens and hells are literally true, but more sophisticated thinkers in the traditions know they are upaya. In fairness, I think most practicing Christians are confused about matters of theology that experts at the Vatican (say) would correct them on.

Here is the definition of democracy: Democracy is a system of government where power is vested in the people, either directly or through elected representatives. It emphasizes equality, participation, and accountability within the political process. Key features include free and fair elections, protection of individual rights, and a system of checks and balances to prevent the concentration of power.
