The story didn’t have any gut wrenching belly laughs, but I did have a silly grin on my face while reading. I rated it 4/5 stars. Summer 1960 NYC . My two sisters and I went to a summer matinee movie for kids. We could walk to the theater. It was some kind of religious movie which was approved by the local parochial school we attended. We knew another movie was next so we slid down in our seats while the Movie Matrons cleared out the kids. ( Movie Matrons were a real thing). They didn’t notice us. The next movie started; it was “Village of the Dammed”. I actually don’t know how long we sat there until we started screaming. We must have been extremely loud. They stopped the movie, turned on the lights and hustled us to the lobby. The theater called our parents, and our Dad came to get us. To this day, I still remember the eyes and light hair on the kids. I still avoid reading “The Midwich Cuckoos” by John Wyndham.

      That is a fantastic story. I haven't been avoiding The Midwich Cuckoos, but I haven't read it yet. Have you ever finished watching Village of the Damned?

    Wait! Let me get my sunglasses. That’s a bright shirt and a scary book cover! So far I’ve only read “ No One Gets out Alive” and the “Reddening”by Adam Nevill. “ Most terrifying book that you ever read” is a scary admission. I have a copy of “All that Fiends of Hell”. I’ll move it up the queue after a finish some Ronald Malfi books.

    As a child I was afraid of Tales From The Darkside. The intro was enough to frighten me. Poltergeist also scared me. But as an adult I don't think much has frightened me. Existential horror comes the closest. Some stories by Laird Barron and Thomas Ligotti. I really need to start reading Adam Nevill's work very soon.

      Existential dread is very scary. I assume it's because of the psychological nature of it.

    I’ve never heard of Colchak (? Spelling?!) - I’m turned off by detective stories for some reason. As a seasoned detective story enjoyer, where would you recommend I start?

    • @ErikSmith57
      @ErikSmith57 Před měsícem

      Kolchak. 😁 The Sonja Blue books by Nancy A. Collins, if you want vampires. The Nightside series by Simon R. Green, for something creepy (as I remember it). If you are willing to try some crime fiction, with no supernatural element, it doesn't come any better than the Hap & Leonard series by Joe R. Lansdale. I love the Cal McDonald stories by Steve Niles. The comics and the prose stuff.

    My favorite werewolf book is The Wolf's Hour by Robert McCammon. My favorite werewolf movie is An American Werewolf in London. I love werewolves. I remember when I was a child that there was a TV series called Werewolf. I used to love that show.

    I thought “Angels and Demons” was better. Both were good at the time but I doubt I would ever reread them. I think that that is true for many books: great to read at that moment but they lose their charm over time. The opposite is also true: some books retain their charm over decades finally getting named a Classic. As always , there are too many other excellent books screaming to be read.

    I've read the first three books and The Magpie Coffin is the first one. I liked the three I read. In fact, I bought and read The Damned Place and The Damned Ones both by Chris Miller. Those two books take place before Dust. I need to read more of the Splatter Westerns. I have a lot more but I just haven't gotten around to reading any of the others yet. I'm reading them in order. The last one that I bought was The Devoured and The Dead by Kristopher Rufty.

      @ErikSmith57 Před měsícem

      Yeah. I'm not a fan of romance, either. I think that I would be more likely to think " That was a horror novel, with some romance elements." than "That was a romance, with some horror elements. "
