River of Gold! Exploring Historic Coloma, California, Where the Gold Rush Began!
Hey Wanderers!
Sorry to keep you waiting so long between videos. It's been a struggle lately, but I haven't given up! I filmed this video back in December of 2023, and I've finally got around to editing it! Better late than never, right?
In the foothills of California's Sierra Nevada Mountains, East of Sacramento, lies a small town named Coloma. Although unassuming now, once upon a time, this was the site of a major turning point in history! In 1848, James Marshall, a worker at the sawmill of John Sutter, on the South Fork of the American River found gold in the river near the mill. Marshall's golden discovery was nothing less than a watershed in American history, triggering a mass migration to the west that would come to be called the California Gold Rush!
When I was there, a holiday festival was going on, so there were some interesting attractions not normally available at other times of year. I'll show you the place on the river where gold was found, a reconstruction of the sawmill, and homes and businesses from the time that have been preserved or restored. Then we'll take a short nature hike to a monument overlooking the town, and finish up by visiting a museum about the area's history!
Thanks for watching! Hope you enjoy the adventure!

I did not go up Mt. Diablo, but being raised in the Bay Area in the 60's and 70's and later flying over and out of it until the mid 90's until I relocated to Arizona, with a more convenient airport for my business travel, I saw Diablo from everywhere. Even from San Francisco, its summit can be seen, blending in with the East Bay Hills over Oakland. In '76, it looked like a mini Mt. Shasta when the Bay Area had snowfall to just above sea level, in the North Bay, and for a week our hill country in the Napa Valley where we lived, and Sonoma County looked like Switzerland with white snow above green vineyards and pastures. I hiked up Mt. St. Helena, around 4350 feet, in '80 from its car park, which required a steep hike up a narrow high grade trail to get to the broader fire trail, which has switchbacks and some miles of hiking to get to the summit. From that Summit I could see the ocean to the west, and because it was quite clear, the snow capped Sierras to the East/Northeast, seeing the summit of Mt. Lassen in the fading distance. The entire hike is 10+ miles, round trip, and on the day I hiked in March, my friend and I and some others who found us saw snow here and there up to the peak. Mt. Diablo I hear has similar views, and some say one can see on a clear day, 40 of California's counties, including some Yosemite Peaks and the Sierras as well. I felt the change in altitude quite well, and it was only the elevation of Reno NV on my St. Helena Hike. Only other mountain summit I visited was Mt. Tamalpais, which I drove to a few times, the last with my fiance when she flew to visit me in California a couple months before we married. In Wyoming, New Mexico and Europe I went up taller peaks above 10,000 feet, but they always had rail or cable cars, and the tallest in Europe, they had glaciers spilling down their peaks, so asphyxia had to be respected meaning no alcohol at those hikes unless one was acclimatized. I loved your video because I felt my muscles getting a workout just by remembering my own hikes when I was in my prime about 30-40 years ago, though at 52 I hiked up to over 12,500 feet in the Great Basin Range NV National park from its dropoff trail. Your mindset while hiking was mine. I did not think 'up' as I hiked up moderate to steep walking trails, I set my POV in such a way that I could trick myself I was just on an extremely long level height and already at its summit, in my mind, before I started knowing I could coast downhill on the way back.

John, I've always dreamed of flying. Of being able to fly a small plane. Lately I've been thinking about taking flying lessons. I've got thousands of hours in flight simulators (mostly video games that are not very serious). I'd be interested in picking your brain about the topic if you're willing. If so, let me know, and we can see where it leads us.

@@wanderwitheric I don't mind if u ask me questions. If u live in the US, best path to flying is by Light Sport, which I did, because it does not require a physical to fly, just a valid driver's license. Light Sport is VFR only, if you wish to fly in controlled airspace, like I do, you must get an endorsement. Light Sport requires a check ride periodically, and you can with enough hours become a light sport CFI and/or mechanic. Rules changes have been proposed to allow us to buy or rent heavier aircraft to fly--right now the limit is 1320# gross which limits the size of the aircraft. They want to raise the gross so we can rent or buy used 152's, 172's although we will be limited to one pax only, we will be safer in chop and have access to cheaper aircraft in the used and rental market. Light Sport pilots can also fly trikes (motorized hang gliders or powered parachutes) and I have had trike training so I can fly single place trikes, which is quite fun though not for all since you have no cabin and your arms are the flight controls for roll and 'elevator', lol

Thanks, Derek! Yeah, it's been a rough summer. Things are finally getting better. I'm almost done editing my next video and I'm hoping to have it up within the next week. I'll try to get them out a little quicker going forward. Thanks for your patience!

I actually wasn't. There were a handful of people. I just edited them out! But it wasn't too crowded that day on account of the weather, and it was pretty early in the season. Thanks for watching!

Nobody ever gets to see all the outtakes a film maker goes thru to get that final take. Funny.

Haha, indeed! I know they're not kidding about the rattlesnakes. I had a close encounter with one on another hike not far from here, just this summer! I didn't see it hiding in the grass, and it started rattling when I got near, as if to say "Don't tread on me!" I backed away slowly :-)

Eric's dad gave me some excellent motorcycle riding advice when I was a new rider about 25 years ago. Advice I have never forgotten.

Seeing parts of the US that I’ve never been to in your videos is a nice way to learn what’s elsewhere. I’ve never been to the places in your CZcams videos and perhaps I never will so it’s such a great opportunity to virtually ride along with you. In some of your westward wandering videos, I am surprised to see unfamiliar roadside geology. Having not experienced similar environments it’s especially hard to imagine the “pancake” flat landscape. Excellent videos, everyone of them!

Thanks so much, Sheila! I'm glad you enjoy the videos and are getting some value from them! Hopefully someday I can revisit some of these places, spending more time and exploring more of what they have to offer than I was able to see passing by on the interstate!

Thats a pretty epic trip. It's a shame you did not have more time to explore them though

    • @wanderwitheric
      @wanderwitheric Před rokem

Definitely! I went through lots of places I'd like to explore more fully someday. But at least I got to pass through those areas... that's more than a lot of people can say! Thanks for watching!

Architecture is fascinating to me and you’ve captured it beautifully. I am partial to the Corps Castle insignia, having worked my career for the Corps of Engineers, so the castle-topped church structure was certainly unique. Enjoyed the history of all the denominations. Excellent presentation!
