    The size mattered a lot more back then, because it was heavily hardware constrained. A 32 meg cart cost a lot more than 8. Just like a system with 32 gigs of ram costs more than 8 now. The rom storage was in chips that cost money to put on carts just like ram still does today. So, if they were using 24 megs, it meant they had enough content to justify the cost. And that's after they used all of the tricks to minimize the file size they used to use back then to save money. Nowadays, a game being 60 gigs as often as not means the devs have 40 gigs worth of content that's inefficiently coded, since storage space is no longer a constraint on the dev side, but the time to optimize the file structure and get rid of redundant assets is.

    You have to remember how small a megabit is. It's not like now where file size doesn't matter because you can fit so damn much into a gigabyte. An 8 megabit game was different in a real and practical way from a 4 megabit game. A 24 megabit game felt like a different console generation compared to a 4 megabit game, even on the same system. It might seem silly, but it really was relevant information when buying a game.

    • @Toad64
      @Toad64 Před 3 dny

      This is all true. And actually your comment reminded me of how Pac-Man for the Atari 2600 had to be made on a 4KB ROM cart instead of the newer 8KB because they wanted to save some money, but it really held the game back. So file size can and does matter! I guess I just find it a bit silly when they use it as a marketing tactic. Thanks for the comment!

  • @captainthunderbolt7541

    You're just wrong. File size can tell you a lot. The extra file size either goes into creating a greater diversity of tiles for visual variety, or it goes into increasing the game's volume for more content. There is a lot of difference between an 8meg RPG and a 32meg RPG. Of course a higher file size does not mean that a game is necessarily good, but it sure doesn't hurt.

    • @Toad64
      @Toad64 Před 3 dny

      You certainly are not wrong that the extra file size can go into all of those things, which would hopefully make for a better gaming experience. I don't recall this being made that big a deal back in the day outside of it sometimes appearing on game boxes like you showed, but at least it was more honest about something that actually enhanced the games than the whole "Blast Processing" marketing spiel that was really just a way of displaying higher-colour images on Genesis--although they still couldn't match the SNES image quality--and wasn't even used in any commercial Genesis games at the time. Higher memory cartridges at least allowed for more graphics and audio data to be stored on the cart, which was often pretty obvious in the end product.

      @@gabemorales7814 SNES can display 255-2040 visible colours on background 1 alone in standard Modes 3 and 4 using the Direct Colour feature (and that's basically 8-bit to 11-bit colour), plus an additional 120 visible colours for background 2 and another additional 120 visible colours for sprites (both of which take their palettes from the massive 15-bit 32,768-colour master palette), plus the backdrop colour. And that's before any standard HDMA colour gradients and colour math are applied, which can increase the colours way beyond those standard numbers. It can also be used during full 60fps gameplay rather than taking up all the CPU resources and even stalling the audio chip that the Genesis' "Blast Processing" does to output these static higher-colour images. And it runs at full 256x224 resolution without glitches, unlike the Genesis' "Blast Processing" that basically halves the Genesis' horizontal resolution to 160 pixels [each pixel ends up being double width just so it can pull of these higher-colour images] and also causes some glitches in the image. And this is not some hacky trick on SNES that took decades to properly figure out and wasn't even used in any commercial games back in the day, just a standard intentionally built-in and officially documented feature of the console that was in fact used in a couple of commercial games back when these systems were actually relevant. SNES Colour Blasting beats the Genesis "Blast Processing" on colour output by a long way.

    Literally every single US Sega Master System game lists its cart size on the side of the box. That's what "The Mega Cartridge" or "The Two Mega Cartridge" or similar mean. They were referring to the megabit size of the cart. A Mega catrridge is 125 kilobytes. This video sounds like someone who didn't get into computing until later, because prior to CD-Roms really catching on around 1995-1996, storage was expensive. It was the single most expensive thing about anything to do with computing. Both volatile and non-volatile. It mattered very much because it was understood that the more storage space you were buying, A) the more expensive the game was and B) the more content you got. You could see this directly in PC games, where the number of disks very much mattered, you'd be mad that, say, Aladdin only came on 1 floppy instead of 2 because it meant it was missing on several levels from the Sega version. The cart size was very much a selling point, and I definitely paid attention to this stuff. But then again, I wasn't like like 8 during the 90s.

    • @Toad64
      @Toad64 Před 3 dny

      Wow, I never even noticed that on the Master System boxes, definitely a bit of a gap in my knowledge from growing up a Nintendo kid. I have a few boxed games though, I will have to check that out. You make good points about why storage space was important, and I agree with all of this. It felt to me that this wasn't a part of game marketing until the SNES/Genesis period, which is why I kind of equate it to the whole 'console wars' thing. But maybe that's just when I noticed Nintendo making a bigger deal of things, because as you say, it was on the Mega Drive boxes.

    It sounds silly now, but back then, there usually was a direct correlation between how large a game was and it's quality. It was seriously expensive to make storage for carts; so if the game was big, it had to be good, as they were paying to store it.

    • @Toad64
      @Toad64 Před 3 dny

      I feel like that can be kind of a double edged sword, right? I mean, it makes sense to want your game to be good if you spent the extra money on the ROM space. But now I feel like companies try to play it so safe by making these huge AAA 'too big to fail' games, and not taking as many chances. Or maybe they're unrelated and I'm just making too big a thing out of it. Anyways, thanks for the comment!

  • @MartinAlejandroLiguori

    This video is a clear result of someone that didn't grow up in those years and doesn't understand what was happening... The reason that companies marketed the amount of megabits in their games was because in that age, a game size usually meant more quality... it is weird to think of it that way, but that is what it was... game size meant that the company had to spend more money on production, the game was more expensive to produce so companies usually spent more time polishing their expensive game, there were no dlc, no updates, no bugfixes.... if you fucked up you fucked up, that's it... every bit counts when you have so little space... furthermore, it also meant that more content was added to the game, more content, more quality, more everything. So that size helped people to understand the value of the game. This trend started to disappear when CD's replaced cartridges because everybody knew the max size of a CD...

    • @thiagoalves7904
      @thiagoalves7904 Před 4 dny

      You are absolutely right. This video shows a remarkable lack of knowledge about the context of that time. The storage space of a game was the biggest technical limitation that developers faced. And the bigger the ROM size, the more expensive the game became. So the developers needed to justify this to the consumer, even highlighting it on the game's cover or in advertising materials. Actually, I believe one of the main problems with those who talk about old games on CZcams is that they almost never mention the size of the game, because knowing the storage space used gives you a better understanding of the difficulties the developers faced in delivering the final product.

    • @Toad64
      @Toad64 Před 3 dny

      I mean I can totally get what you're saying, and I do not disagree. In a lot of ways, a larger file size does mean more content, probably more graphical variety, things like that. And I certainly don't mean for this to sound like an authority on anything, it was just a silly three minute video with my hot take. I dunno, this is just one of those things when I look back on it that I feel like it was used for marketing but not...effectively, if that makes sense. There's plenty you can use that extra space for, but simply saying the size of the cart I don't feel gave you much information in what to expect. Maybe I'm wrong, but it just felt like part of the console wars 'We've got the higher number' kind of back and forth that was going on at the time. As an aside, even though the 'trend started to disappear when CD's replaced cartridges', I looked around and found at least a couple, including Phantasmagoria mentioning their game coming on 7CDs in their ad. Which I found funny, because good God, that's a lot of CDs!

    My soft brain back in the day used to somewhat care about file size while grossly misunderstanding it. I remember fantasizing about how big of a game FF7 must be. FF3/6 was 24 megabits, but FF7 was 3 600-megabyte CDs! It must be hundreds of times longer! That said, I never got that jazzed about 16 vs 24 vs 32 megabit cartridges or whatever. I barely knew what 8/16/32/64-bit even meant, and it was just assumed that higher numbers meant better graphics. To a degree that was true, as it was for cartridge size. Back then, sometimes the biggest limitation was the amount of ROM space available, and a bigger cartridge did mean a better or more impressive game. If I sort my SNES ROMs by largest to smallest, that does seem to hold true. A lot of my favorite games are up there at the top, and the bottom is a much worse mix -- still some good ones, but a lot of mid-tier stuff as well. I was still an idiot for thinking FF7 would basically be a near-endless adventure, though.

      I remember seeing these on the boxes as a child but never gave it a second thought. But given back then, you would be buying a game that you don't have to install file size wouldn't be dreaded like it is today. Maybe people who were older at the time would have understood it to mean "more content" or "higher quality."

      @@Toad64 that detail about only two rentals a month must have eluded me as a 12 year old lol. I did the SNES. Remember practicing relentlessly just like you. I have a brief memory of the people at the store, saying something that I missed qualifying for the next round by only eleven bananas. I have no proof whether or not that was true, but it's a funny story

(I also still have a sealed copy of the 1st DS game from not long after it came out in English. 😅) I bet a decent amount of people saw it for the 1st time when Mr. Sakurai did that crossover with him a few months back too.

    my first exposure to this series was the ds game, retro game challenge. i can’t wait to finally play the sequel officially when it comes to switch! (y’know, if it gets a us release, or even an english language option) i even got the retro game master box set!

    • @Toad64
      @Toad64 Před 7 měsíci

      I'm also really hoping that the Switch game gets at least an English option. Though I imported the 2nd DS game back in the day, and with the exception of the murder mystery game and the RPG game, it's easy and enjoyable enough to play through with a guide. There's an English patch for the second game now, too, but I would much prefer an official English release. Fingers crossed! (maybe the popularity of his guest appearances on the recent Masahiro Sakurai channel will convince the decision makers that there's a reason to bring it out here)
