How do we raise manly men in the American Black Community? (I have not heard the response from the guest yet) As a man, I think men and women are responsible for this so-called lack of manly men. Respectfully, The question should be rephrased to determine how we develop religious, productive, intelligent, moral, and emotionally sound men in the community. For women: I can only offer my thoughts concerning women this topic, as I lack the lived experience and genetics that make women think and perform the actions they acquire. (nothing happens without the will of Allah). I think women (not all but the majority) who are active participants in today's family building (this may include courtship, marriage, parenting, and nonpubescent children...) receive information about what a manly male is from women or some form of entertainment. Sure, many of them may have listened to the story of our dear prophet and his companions. However, what they see, feel, and experience about manliness comes primarily from women, as their mothers will likely not have had a successful marriage to their fathers. In this case, the mother does her best to teach the male and female child about manhood. Entertainment: American black Muslim culture often depicts manly men as those who are physically, verbally, and emotionally aggressive (yes, there are times when aggression is needed). The movies we consume, the music we consume, and the stories (including social media) we consume give praise to physical, verbal, and emotionally aggressive men. I'm not pointing fingers at any group, male or female; we have a collective challenge. We need to be more intentional about how we guide the adults who actively build families and our youth. For instance, we (American black Muslims) romanticize our men going to jail or prison. I don't think it is done intentionally, but we repeat stories about how it was during the times of incarceration. I have not been to one American black Muslim community without hearing such stories. The group usually laughs, smiles, and enjoys themselves while exchanging stories. Granted, we all have our lived experiences. However, we should not praise being incarcerated as if it were a right of passage. I'm sorry. I have not gotten to men in regards to manliness, but I have already written a lot.
