    I LOVE my Starcaster! The neck shape is great, it's lightweight, and it's comfortable to play. The stock tuners are fine too. Like most, I'm not a big fan of the headstock design, but that's not a deal breaker. I've seen no need to change pickups or wireing as they work fine for me. My only complaint is that the pole pieces don't line up well under the high E string. That's not really a problem because there is no noticible decrease in volume. What I did do was add a Les Trem vibrato (NOT tremelo!) tail piece. That was an easy installation and adds a whole new dimention to the guitar - highly recommended!

    Can you just slow down your talking a bit? there was no emotion in your voice. It sounded like a machine talking, pause and take a breath, I've got a Cherry red, 1964 Gibson ES-335, worth about £20'OOO, if I so called upgraded it, it would probably half its present value so it would become a down-grade, if the guitar doesn't sound as you want it to when you try it, don't buy it.

    • @jasonbrucemusic

      Stock is 500 full-size. I stuck with 500 because I knew that the Porter pickups would be a little louder & more present, & more brightness wasn’t something I necessarily needed from this guitar. The 500 gives me plenty of usable range. Plus, I think it has a smoother taper than the 1mg, which I tend to prefer, because I am constantly adjusting my tone knobs.

      I do get paid. I know there is some disagreement on this, & I fully understand the logic behind most arguments against paying musicians. But from my perspective, musical & technical craft that ministers to a spiritual community are things worth investing in, because offering this service costs time, energy, resources, & highly specific skills that not everyone has, more so than many other equally essential & honorable contributions to church service. Every church's situation is different, but if the budget is capable, I believe it to be the ethical thing to do.

    • @jasonbrucemusic
      @jasonbrucemusic Před rokem

      Hahaha you’re welcome. I can’t pull them off very convincingly anyway. Not really, because drives & amps have a naturally low-end roll off regardless. The primary consequence of increased low end from the guitar is the way drive & distortion break up a little differently. But I hadn’t really noticed on this guitar, I would guess that pickups were designed to be slighter thinner-sounding to compensate, maybe? Plus, I’m always thinking like a producer/arranger, so when the bass comes in to fill in the low end, I typically move a higher voicing, regardless of the guitar, so it evens out in the end. The difference to FOH sound is minimal. Unless it’s an arrangement built intentionally around that low voicing on the guitar (like the intro track), my motto is treat the low B string like salt & pepper; apply it tastefully. Too much becomes obnoxious.

    The only problem with all this is that when you want to change out a pedal or two you’re fucked and have to start all over again.

    • @jasonbrucemusic
      @jasonbrucemusic Před rokem

      Not necessarily! In my recent video, you can see I've already swapped out a couple of pedals. Making changes to board is pretty easy, presuming the new pedal is roughly the same dimensions as the old pedal, & a lot of pedals are the standard 4.5x2.5. The key is when I make my patch cables, I make sure they have a little extra length to cover for when jacks on a different spot on the pedal. Perhaps occasionally I'll need to resolder a new patch cable, but that's 5 maybe 10 minutes of work. Because I'm pretty much settled in what I want as far as the big picture signal path & architecture of the board, any pedal I swap out for will be filling a similar role on the board, so I'm not having to reinvent the wheel every time. If I ever truly have to start over with this board, it will be because I'm making a fundamental change to the layout or signal path, like incorporating a switcher or a different amp sim, not just switching a couple things.

    • @jasonbrucemusic
      @jasonbrucemusic Před rokem

      I can understand that logic, & I have certainly thought about incorporating a switcher. I even have one sitting on my shelf not getting used! But in designing it, I decided that for what I need & how I'm using the board, a switcher would actually complicate my workflow more than it would simplify it. Although, the Selah Quartz in the top left corner does a lot of midi control for me, so most of my drive sounds & almost all of my time-based effects have presets programmed that I'm triggering with it. But the reason I refer to this a "pro" board because it's thoroughly thought out & meticulously built to be very reliable & to travel extremely well, much like how a professional rig builder would put it together. So it has more to do with the assembly quality of the board than it's actual contents. & to be honest, this board literally has never left the house unless I was getting paid to bring it with me, so I guess that makes it pretty "pro".

I started playing guitar in an art punk band during the height of midwest hardcore, much of it Christian Hardcore and that was also a rough ride all its own. After a decade selling out, building a career and then walking away I've gone back to my passion for music and am relearning guitar and slogging my way through Justin guitar course trying to fill in all my huge blank spots from being self taught and faking my way through in my youth. • @christianboddum8783

    Nice video. When I played in church I thought in much of the same lines, trying to create a massive 12 string sound by working out parts with the other guitar player. It helps dividing instruments out in octaves, so everyone has their own octave. I have played reggae and learned how to divide a rhythm between two guitar players to create more dynamics, that helps too.

    • @jasonbrucemusic
      @jasonbrucemusic Před rokem

      It is true that my baritone is a slight bit noisier than my other guitars, but noise is to be expected from single coil pickups. You can mitigate noise a number of ways, like making sure your rig is getting clean grounded power, or even how far from your pedalboard or amp the guitar is. At certain point, electronic interference is unavoidable, but that’s kind of part of game of playing electric guitar, unless you’re interested in noiseless pickups or using a noise gate, which have their place. Truth is some pickups just handle ground hum better than others & there are a myriad of factors that go into that. I like to swap pickups on my guitars from time to time, so I’ll likely swap out some other P90s or maybe some PAFs at some point, which I assume will be a little less noisy.
