Could you explain how putting money into a declining market is a hedge against inflation ? Inflation is dropping, economy is in the toilet, unemployment is rising, and real estate is declining. Victoria is fairing better than some but Developers are only offering 5% because their units aren’t selling.

And then get to find a new rental again because the landlord wants more money. People in China wanting to move...there is a federal limit to how much people Canada wants to take in every year and is running near max limit almost each year. So just because people from elsewhere decide to move doesn't mean Canada will will double or triple their immigration plans from where it is now. It is dictated by what we need and when we need and how much is practical. As you pointed out health care system is one of the major concerns already. Canada can't infinitely let people in without expanding the infrastructure. It's already getting close to the breaking point. Secondly, I too have been pointing out the pumping more money into circulation since the governments started doing it recklessly since 2020 (Actually since the collapse in 2007 but that's a topic for another day). Recession is likely to happen because the governments won't take their foot off the gas on controlling inflation (increasing rates etc.). When they finally do the recession will already be there. There are already many signs the recession is already here. Once it enters the cycle, well it is a cycle so things won't recover overnight. The stock market is expected to finish 20% below from where it is now. Finally, the cost of owning a home is becoming less lucrative than renting one. The thumb rule has been to buy a home that's 2x-2.5x the annual income. This number is becoming history. Always fun to share thoughts/ opinions with knowledgeable and passionate folks on economy. Nevertheless, hoping for the best. Cheers and wishing you and your fam a happy 2023!

GICs are at 5%, it could climb up next year. It's an excellent option to look into esp. given volatility in stock market and uncertainty in Real estate as well. Get that 10-15% safe returns in the next couple years and the real estate will be 10-20% cheaper then. So a net of 30% difference.

IMHO, it's still not a good time to jump in. The recession is coming and US stock market is going to finish lower next year than this year. This will all have impact on global economy.
